Dell should discuss the rumored ultraportable with us

Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jan 17

There has been much speculation about a leaked picture of a possible upcoming Dell ultraportable. Some say 13.3 inch others think it is 15" and some even speculate it is the 16" from the XPS they showed at CES. Upon magnification you can see it has the following visable: Slot load DVD, 2 USB, Ethernet and 2 other ports (display port and power?) on the left side. Also visable is built in web cam on the LED lit screen. It doesn't appear to have media buttons or a fingerprint reader.

The guys in marketing and developement must be getting sick of being scouped by Engadget and with all the flack they have gotten over the other recent releases (XT, M1330 and M1530). Why not create some good PR, scoup Engadget for once and find out some of the complaints while there is still time to tweak the system. Discuss this system Dell as it can only lead to a better product and greater buzz for it in the process. 46 Comments »

Driver updates

Dell Web Site, Laptops submitted by alexb Feb 18

Dell should update their notebook drivers more often.
For example their current ATI display drivers for Windows Vista were released in the middle of 2007.
I feel that many people are frustrated because drivers are not updated to get more features, better performance etc.
I'm sure that if Dell commited to update notebook drivers regularly people would be more likely to buy Dell in the future for support alone. 6 Comments »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 242 Comments »

Add Option to buy a Laptop Cooler with purchase

Laptop Power submitted by hesham 12/25/07

Need to buy a trusted laptop cooler with the laptop, it should consume low power for its' fans and built from good cooling material.
This is need to cool the laptop, and in case of the need to put it on our legs it will be easier, as you will not fell the laptop heat on your legs.

I can find many on the market but not sure of the power they will consume and their efficieny, need Dell to test some of them and add them to the optional laptop accessories 4 Comments »

Silent Graphics Card Option

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by fahim.a.sabir 04/21/07

Hi,

Firstly, I think this is a great idea.

I recently bought a Dimension 9200 which included a GeForce 7900 which has fan that is really loud under Vista - so much so that when I put a passive 7600 in my machine, I could barely hear it.

I am actually quite disappointed as the machine was advertised as being cool and quiet. It is far from what I would describe as quiet and has forced me to spend a further £80 to get a replacement graphics card. The only reason I chose this particular card was because it was the cheapest one that gave me 2 DVI ports.

I have been given the excuse about fan control by drivers in Vista, and to be quite frank I don't care. Dell sold me the system, so I hold them responsible for any issues with it.

Please sort this out, these days - with the technology about, there is no reason for a computer to make any noise - I mean Apple computers are silent.... Comment »

CPU / GPU Heat Display

Gaming submitted by doomlord52 02/18/07

This is something every gamer wants and needs: something to tell Him / Her when the system is getting hot. Ive seen them sold seperatly, but they take up an entire drive bay. If Dell could make one that is small and takes up some useless area of space, then you would no longer have crashes / lags due to heat. This would be even more usefull if you could have them in laptops, due to the fact that they dont have the best cooling system. 4 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

laptops with user-serviceable fans/heatsinks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by chzdanish 02/24/07

My current Dell laptop (inspiron 5100) is occasionally shutting down due to temperature problems. I'm sure the heatsinks are clogged with dust, but I can't easily get to them without disassembling the laptop. Not good! If there was a cover that protected the sinks which was removable for cleaning, that would sure help. Comment »

Laptop Fans

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by davew 02/18/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Heat rises! Get the exhaust ports off the bottom of the laptops where it just blows back up into the machine. Put them out the side or the top and everything including processors, drives, batteries and the cooling systems themselves will run cooler and more efficiently. I already burned out one mother board, which thankfully was replaced under extended warrantee. I am so protective now that I never use my laptop without a supplemental cooling pad underneath, which blows the air out the sides. Unless this changes I would think twice about buying another or recommending a Dell laptop to anyone else without advising them of the problem.

Easy access to fans for cleaning on laptops

Laptops submitted by celticgibson 04/22/07

As we all know, the inspiron laptops get hot once dust builds up on the CPU/GPU grills and it's impossible to clean them without having to resort to taking the latop apart. It would be awesome if you could put blank plates on the bottom of the laptop, where the fans take in air, to allow for easy access for removal of fans and hence the cleaning of the grills. This would save many a problem with overheating hardware and endless tech support problems. 17 Comments »

standard exchangeable parts (fan, media bay)

Inspiron products submitted by rambo 02/20/07

i loved my inspiron 8600 with it's media bay, wich allowed me to exchange the dvd drive in seconds.

i loved my inspiron 8600 with it's fan that could be taken out, cleaned, put back in in less than 3 minutes.

I'd like to be able to replace the other parts(gpu fan, keybord) as easily.

I'd like to have one standard dell-notebook-keyboard.
I'd like to have one standard dell-notebook-fan
I'd like to have one standard dell-notebook-media-bay

I never understood why all this things are no longer possible in the new inspiron 6000 line.

i never understood why every model has its uniqze replaceable parts 1 Comment »

More agressive Fans

Laptop Power submitted by notquitehere188 02/17/07

Notebook fans need to be more agressive, with a program i downloaded, i can get the fans to full and still hardly hear them, and even at lower than that, the temperature differences are huge.

this would help stop burning peoples laps, and also make laptops and their batteries last longer.

plus, with a real dell solution, you could keep the temperature more constant, something i have yet to accomplish. Comment »

IdeaStorm: Remove the Team Picture area on IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge Feb 18

Some of the new add-ons, especially the "The Team" pictures has no business on IdeaStorm, a Business WebSite who's goal is to improve Dell not to "caricature" it.

In addition, this is offensive, the caricature of the Dell employees is offensive and demeaning, I mean does Dell do this to put them at a lower level than a regular employee? Does Dell feel they can't put the real picture up for any particular reason? I'm sure the feminism organization would throw a hissy fit if they saw this. Well I just forwarded it to them. The whole business aspect alone is really wrong, as far as taking them seriously, or am I the only one laughing at them? (the caricature's, not the persons, I know you were thinking the wrong thing, typical Dell assumptions)

Besides, those links only go on to waste precious time, I mean don't we want the ideas processed and implemented? Or does Dell want to spend time converting all its employee's pictures to caricatures? I'm sure if any IdeaStormer posted a caricature of a Dell employee they'd be banned or sent a nasty e-mail. Or are we also free to post caricature's of Dell employee's?

Edited per .chris's request or comment, see comments do add to the idea Dell, get with the program! 11 Comments »

Use better LCD panels in laptops.

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mlazarov Feb 26

In order for laptops to be a viable platform for graphical applications, the color reproduction and viewing angles of their displays must be addressed. Most laptops use TN/CCFL displays that suffer from poor color range and color shift. Dell should at very least offer an S-IPS/LED display option in their workstation-class laptops. I realize several of Dell's laptops already have LED backlighting, but there would a significant improvement quality if S-IPS panels were used.

Update: I thought it'd be best to illustrate the difference between TN and S-IPS displays. Below is a side-by-side comparison of a TN (left) and S-IPS (right) display from an off-axis vertical angle.

http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/10884.jpg

Having such dramatic color variation at different angles almost precludes any sort of in-field collaborative image editing or similar application. The laptop on the right is a (discontinued) ThinkPad T60p.

List the manufacturer/interface type of the hard drives, please

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by brutalnet Feb 28

I have had AWFUL experiences with Hitachi/Fujitsu/Samsung, etc hard drives, and for over ten years have had stellar experiences with Western Digital drives. This would be a great selling point to know this in advance. Also, nowhere on the Vostro specs pages does it say what type of interface the drive is (SATA/PATA). You can find out if it comes with Roxio installed, but can't find out what the interface/brand is for the drive? Baffling... 1 Comment »

On/Off Button For Touchpad On All Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by harisn9000 Feb 28

I'd really like to see Dell release a touch pad that has a simple on/off button. I know they have software that does this, but a button is physical and right in front of you with an indicator LED displaying if it is on or off.

PS. HP already offers this! Let's get busy Dell!
Also, I'll take the first one of the assembly line as a demo and a beta tester! 1 Comment »
