Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

All 17" notebooks should have a numeric keypad.

Laptops submitted by winoffice Jun 13

I own a Dell Vostro 1700 notebook PC. I especially like the fact that it has an numeric keypad.

I also plan to purchase a Dell Precision M6300 notebook PC in the near future. I like most about it, but I do have a problem with the fact that it lacks a numeric keypad. If you can include a numeric keypad on the 1700, then why not on the M6300? I am certain that both are large enough to include one, since they both measure 17" in screen size. Include a numeric keypad on the 6300, and I will buy it! 2 Comments »

XPS notebook feature refresh

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by atxguy512 Jun 22

With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options.

For info on "Studio" Dell see: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/even-more-on-dells-studio-1536-1536-and-th...

I'm an XPS fan, so please consider bringing the same options to the m1330, m1530... especially the BACK LIT keyboard. This is the one feature I love about Mac(s). Also, consider uping the video options on the m1530 to offer a 512MB option from nVidia. 2 Comments »

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »

Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

FIX IT, DELL!!!! 9 Comments »

Light up keyboards for business laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Small Business, Laptops submitted by derricktwo Jun 24

I'm fortunate enough to have made it in this industry without really knowing how to type. I can type fairly fast, but I have to look at the keys while I'm doing so. I highly doubt I am the only person that needs to do this. I noticed that the Alienware notebooks have an option to add a light up keyboard. I think this would a great feature to have on Dells business class laptops. This would allow people to work in bed without needing to turn on the lights, or during night flights for a business trip. Discounts, Credit, or Cash for Recycling Old Laptops and Computers

Sales Strategies submitted by wendaline Jun 19

I think Dell should offer customers either a discount, credit, or cash back for recycling their old computers. Both HP and Toshiba do this, so, why not Dell? If they did this it would help the enviroment while gaining loyal customers or keeping already loyal customers from going to their competetors AND they could refurbish the old parts and start selling refurbished computers at lower prices for those of us who can't afford to spend a fortune on a new computer. Come on Dell execs listen to your consumers, the ones who pay your salery, and keep us as your customers. Do you really want the other companies to win? 1 Comment »

One Configurator 2 Rule Them All!

Dell Web Site submitted by q0987 Jun 14

Sorry about the title, I just couldn't help it.

Okay, this may just be me but why are there FOUR configurators to use when buying a system with the options split amongst them? What if I wanted something in between Cheap option and Really Cheap option. Do I have to buy the extra components even if I ain't ever gonna use them.

IDEA:

Have ONE configurator with ALL of the options listed and apply the price cuts whilst the customer is browsing between them by showing how total is worked out in a drop-down box next to the scroll bar e.g. RAM 3GB: - ₤15.
If you have to, then put [recommendations] down at the top of the page. Youknow, maybe something like 'Add the Monitor and get ₤50 off'. This way the price will adjust automatically so users won't have to go through each configurator to find out which one would give them the best price for whatever they have in mind.
It would be alot less confusing and frustrating and more quicker for the customer.

WHICH ONE DO I USE!?

And whilst we are on the subject, how come Crimson Red isn't available for the m1330 anymore?
Also, Montevina is suppose to come out this month. Any chance the Dell technicians will be able fit the Blu-ray drive whenever they decide to do the refresh? They said they were gonna when the m1330 was released about a year ago. Ain't it about time they come clean if they simply can't do it. Then we can finally stop holding our breath.

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by tcpaulh Jun 3

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

For example the M1530 although specified with 90-100 degree vertical viewing angles, the reality is that there is at best a 15-20 degree vertical viewing angle before colour inversion occurs.

Vertical viewing angles at present do not appear to conform to stated specifications!

Dell have been promising better viewing angles since 2002 with Ultrasharp screens but these screens are still not available across the XPS line of laptops.

Please sort it out Dell and stop using the cheapest screen technology in your premium products.

Thank you. 9 Comments »

LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by whitefrost May 14

The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 6 Comments »

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 5 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »
