Slot-loading CD,DVD, Blu-ray Drives for Laptop

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by codyfranklin205 Jul 25 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Let's start designing laptops so that the optical drive is slot-loaded. This cuts down on the width of the drive and allows light weight laptops to have built drives instead of carrying an USB disc drive. For an example of a slot loaded drive look at the Wii.

improved offerings (like a mobile ATI product again)

Service and Support, XPS products submitted by dragon_nin3 Jul 28

with all the new video hardware coming out for the desktop segment, i am excited about what will hapen in the mobile segment. i bought an m1730 (love it) and i really want to see something like the ATI 4870x2 in mobile form (super powerful, and i do realise that it will take time to make a product on both sides of the house).

just pleasepleaseplease do not gimp this platform like what has been done to the previous XPS laptop models:

i have owned a XPS gen2 (awesome, but couldnt upgrade the graphics as claimed, nothing was ever made for it, so i sold it)
i have owned an XPS m1710 (awesome, but no upgrade option either - the 7950 was not worth it, so it has been sold)

if this current paltform doesnt get an upgrade option (the 8800m should not be the only one ><) i will end up not buying dell again, nor will i ever recommend it. Comment »

Laptop removable Harddrive

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by robertfischer Jul 29

Today (Tuesday , July 29 2008) a report was published regarding losing laptops on Airports, Worldwide weekly over 15.000 laptops, as a matter Dell was involved in this research. I suggest to have easy removable hard-drive, not funny if your laptop is gone but atleast you still have all your data. Simple and Easy. 4 Comments »

Change the XPS M1330 screen bezel

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by jeopardy Jul 30

One of the problems anyone who's owned an XPS M1330 for any length of time knows is that the edge of the trackpad rubs on the plastic bezel above the screen, eventually producing a shiny, un-removable mark. Some people have also reported the keyboard makes contact with the actual screen itself and leaves the outline of the keys on the screen.

I think a simple way to solve this problem would be to slightly update the design of the M1330, and add the little rubber tube-things that go around the edge of most screens to stop this from happening, and leave just a little gap between the base and the screen. 3 Comments »

Pay Attention To Our Ideas!

IdeaStorm, Software submitted by aikiwolfie Jul 29

Using the new "Top Ideas" feature I tracked all the top rated ideas from the highest voted to 0 points. From page 1 to page 400. On every single page there were a healthy number of ideas relating to Linux, Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org, Firefox and free open source software in general.

The highest voted Linux/FOSS idea had 151870 points and the lowest had 9 points. I'm sure there are other with negative votes in the remaining 79 pages. But most of those ideas were about Microsoft products. Windows XP, Vista, Microsoft Works and Office. The remainder were hardware related, things Dell just can't do or non-idea threads.

Sure this must tell Dell something about the demand for free open source software on Dell PCs? The highest voted idea of all time here on IdeaStorm is Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot with 151870 points. In fact the entire first page is all about Linux, FOSS and no trial ware. That theme continues all the way through IdeaStorm to page 400.

So when we ask for more Linux support and better FOSS support please don't fob us off with the old "supply and demand" excuse. There is plenty of demand amongst the Dell consumer base to warrant treating Ubuntu as an equal to Windows.

  1. Please put Ubuntu in the OS list and let people make a proper informed choice.

  2. Please let people deselect pre-installed software they do not want. Including the OS.

  3. Allow people to buy bare hardware.

  4. Give us a choice of web browser, e-mail client and office productivity software beyond Microsoft!

We were told if we voted for it, we would get it!

Choice of the graphic card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by enibas Jul 31

For the XPS M1530, we can't chose a graphic card other than 8600 mGT. I think it could me good, given that this card as a default of made, we have the choice to take a 8700 mGT or 8800 mGT.

What do you think about it? Do you agree with me?

DELL PLEASE OFFER US NEW AMD BASED SOLUTIONS

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by maxius Aug 3

well my idea is that dell should offer consumer AMD based systems and laptops on their website. I would be ecstatic to see a new DELL / XPS / Alienware System and Laptop based around amd/ati's new gpu's (hd3850 / hd3870 /hd 3870x2 / hd4850 / 4870 / 4870x2) chipsets (780g/790gx Igp chipsets) and processors (black edition 5000+ / 9950 / turion ultra)

though right now what i would love to see is a new laptop from dell using amd's PUMA Platform that was showcased at Computex with all the platform features supported, Like the ati mobile 3800 series, Hybrid Crossfire X and the XGP port.

come on dell step up to the plate offer more amd products on a side note make my laptop i have money in hand waiting for it. Comment »

clarify dual display capable on sales page

Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by undead999 Aug 3

Dell should clarify what dual display capable means for video card options. One might expect it will support 2 standard LCD monitors natively, that is not the case, it will support one DVI and HDMI/display port capable TV or monitor. Some could think this is misleading.

Sales department needs to be briefed on this as well.

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »

Back key on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by catsnstuff Feb 26

The setup of my Inspiron keyboard and touchpad is much easier to use than other brands I have tried. However, after getting used to the "back" button on more recent mouse designs, it is frustrating to have no similar option near the touchpad. The "backspace" option simply doesn't offer the convenience that the back button on a mouse does. A "go back" button either to the lower left of the touchpad, or immediately under it on the left side, would offer this convenient function without getting in the way of other typing. Even on the edge, next to the media buttons, would be in the same area and within easy reach. 2 Comments »

List the manufacturer/interface type of the hard drives, please

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by brutalnet Feb 28

I have had AWFUL experiences with Hitachi/Fujitsu/Samsung, etc hard drives, and for over ten years have had stellar experiences with Western Digital drives. This would be a great selling point to know this in advance. Also, nowhere on the Vostro specs pages does it say what type of interface the drive is (SATA/PATA). You can find out if it comes with Roxio installed, but can't find out what the interface/brand is for the drive? Baffling... 1 Comment »

Explain how long "shortly" is.

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice Feb 28

Last evening when trying to access the IdeaStorm Web site I instead received the following message:

"The system is down for
maintenance as of 16:38 PST.

It'll be back shortly."

or something similar. Could you please explain how much "shortly" is? It might be obvious to some, but some uncertainty does remain. Is "shortly" an hour? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? I understand that Dell cannot give an exact amount, but something like an estimate would be great. Thank you. 11 Comments »

Laptop design rules & guidelines

Laptops submitted by anordal Feb 26

This is my attempt at defining some basic principles of good laptop design. This applies to hardware, with no specific manufacturer in mind. I appreciate comments.

Guidelines:

  1. Connections for things that people plug in and out all the time, such as sound, USB, etc, should mainly be on the left hand side. This leaves the right hand free of the cable mess to operate the mouse, without compromising connection accessibility. I'm not saying it is wrong to have some extra USBs on the right or back, there should just be plenty on the left anyway. It is important to have redundancy of these frequently used connections.
  2. Cables that are big or usually stay connected long, such as the power cable and the various monitor cables should be connected to the back.
  3. The front side is not an ideal placement for connections or buttons.
  4. The center of gravity is preferrable to have in the front.
Rules:
  1. A laptop has at least 2 headphone jacks and 2 USBs on the left hand side.
  2. The sound volume is controlled by an analog wheel.
  3. The left Ctrl-key is placed in the lower left corner of the keyboard. I see no reason to mix it up with the Fn-key.
The following is relevant to all types of computers:
  1. It is sometimes a huge advantage in gaming if the keyboard can sense many keypresses at once, a handicap if it can't.
  2. A hardware problem can not be solved by software, so don't even try.
  3. There is a need for standardization in everything.

Dell: Create the first True Laptop (aka notebook, portable) Computer.

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by jorge Feb 26

Dell get out of the Desktop thinking box and step into the True "Laptop" world.

Create a laptop with no connections/ports other than power!

You have:

Wireless Ethernet (802.11) so no need for an Ethernet Port AND Broadband access (left that out originally, for those in remote areas)
Wireless USB so no need for USB ports
BlueTooth so no need for phone jacks

A true Laptop can use these features to accomplish their tasks just fine, for a true Laptop! At the moment Dell is still thinking within the confining space of a laptop that acts like a Desktop, well they are not equal. Yes some customers still feel the need for the crutch of the old ways of doing things but its 2008! Move on to the future and design the "No Ports", "No Dongle", yet self contained Laptop!

You can drop the DVD player as well, its a Laptop not a TV or movie player. Look at the other small video devices, they don't include a DVD player (aka iPod, iPhone).

Moving to this new paradigm will move Dell to the forefront of the computer world, its not just a laptop its a self contained entity! Its so rock solid it needs no extra junk to function! Of course you need to make it with a way to re-install via wireless Ethernet or Wireless USB but it can be done.

This alone would move you to cult status in the Computer World! Apple would be left crying in a corner somewhere. Mikey! Get on the ball!

Almost forgot, make it with both the Windows OS and Ubuntu or OpenSource OS as an option (the OS's are the option not OpenSource) so you can't release it till both are working.

Addendum: Also only include SSD long term memory devices, for the OS and local configuration data

Also, this is where Dell services like the DataSafe Backup play an important roll! 37 Comments »
