Start a reseller model vs. 'Dell only' for accessories

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), PartnerStorm submitted by earlra 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I was looking from RAM and an internal HD to upgrade my Dimension 4600 machine. However, when i looked on the Dell site, I could find only 'reconditioned' hard drives. To add insult to injury, I found I could get new drives at a better cost/capacity ratio from other online vendors. Why in the world would I then buy from Dell? In the end, the only thing I bought from Dell was the mounting bracket to make sure I had the right one.

I suggest you do like Amazon, and start partnering with other vendors so I have one-stop shopping. I will not pay more for the DELL name, but if you are the most convenient vendor for me to do all my shopping, as Amazon, is, then I will shop with Dell. The customer can get better selection and pricing, and you can find some way to make a reasonable commission profit.

Solution Provider Direct Program Upgrade

PartnerStorm submitted by cyberbiz 02/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Most customers and industry people don't know this, but Dell has a reseller program where small software vendors, VARs and system integrators can buy discounted Dell gear and resell to the public. The idea, naturally, is for the reseller to provide support services in conjunction with the hardware sale.

This reseller program addresses Dell's support issues because end-users who buy from the channel tend to rely on their reseller for primary support, or use the reseller to run interference when a problem needs escalation.

Based on my experience this reseller program could use a few basic tweaks to make it more industry standard and give the program members some more incentive to use Dell rather than TechDarta and HP/Compaq or IBM/Lenovo as channel/hardware partners.

* Bump up the credit limits and help the channel get more working capital

* Simplify the billing and payables process

* Make the Dell Premier site actually give us the prices we can get from our human reps

* Give us some reseller basics like a logo program and soft marketing dollars

* Support the channel by giving us leads and some sort of regional or industry sales support for big leads

If Dell is losing direct corporate sales, then I believe the wrapping their gear in a reseller channel will give Dell customers more local support and feel better about buying Dell based on a trusted recommendation.

Empower Your Value Added Resellers

PartnerStorm submitted by mongo 02/24/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As it stands, very few customers even know Dell has a Value Added Reseller program. The program itself is poorly supported internally, and lacks the infrastructure to compete with other major reseller programs. Here is a list of the top five things Dell needs to do to improve the Value Added Reseller program:

1- Give customers an easy way to send configurations to VARs for quotes and add functionality that allows VARs to edit configurations without having to rebuild them from scratch.

2- Make the price shown on Premier the best possible purchase price. Right now VARs have to send quotes to their account managers for the “best” pricing, which is a waste of time for everyone involved.

3- Make all software and peripherals available on Premier. So many items are simply not listed and require a call to your S&P agent.

4- Let us customize the packing slips sent to customers and use plain packaging. It doesn't look very professional when a customer orders from Company A only to receive a box from Dell.

5- Fix your internal availability and shipping systems. I have lost track of how many times I've placed an order for an item which should ship “In 24 Hours”, only to have it back ordered for weeks. Add to that the shipping system that sends shipment notifications after customers have received packages and shows unreliable tracking information in Premier and you have a real nightmare for VARs.

Resellers

PartnerStorm submitted by colinharris 07/15/07

I would like to see proper recognition of value added resellers. At present, we are treated like corporate customers and get allocated an account manager who knows that we are buying on behalf of our customers. We have no idea what our margin will be on any purchase or if there will be any margin. Often, customers phone in and get as good, if not better deals than we get. There are a lot of VARs buying from Dell, mainly because we like the reliability of the products. Please setup a VAR channel with a structured commission system. 2 Comments »

Offer Nextday Delivery

Sales Strategies submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 15

Please for the love of God offer next day delivery of pre-configured PCs. I've just had to buy a new M1530 at short notice. Which meant I had to go to Tesco. Which meant I had to buy a Vista machine. Which means I'm now mentally traumatized and scarred for life!

Seriosuly getting Vista up and running for the first time is just a barrage of pop-ups. All one after the other. Some at the same time. If I could have ordered a Ubuntu system directly from Dell, I could have avoided that whole mind destroying experience. 3 Comments »

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Offer IdeaStormers To R&D Their Own Ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by simon_n Jun 19

IdeaStorm is a fertile breeding ground for ideas that helps foster valuable creativity.
The problem is that lots of the good ideas and the people suggesting them seem to get forgotten about because Dell hasn't got a team for dealing with them.

Dell could offer IdeaStormers the opportunity to research and develop the most popular ideas. 2 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Ideastorm Mobile

IdeaStorm, Digital Nomads submitted by zmjjmz Jun 23

So you may be asking, am I insane?
Well, yes, I am, but that's besides the point.

I've noticed that due to the weight of the Ideastorm site, it's pretty much unusable on mobile devices such as an iPod Touch.
So a lighter, more accessible version of the Ideastorm site would be nice for us Blackberry/iPod Touch/iPhone/what have you users.

Also it'd provide an easier way to embed it into a site, not sure if you'd want that though. 7 Comments »

Include a touch sensitive screen on your new linux powered sub-notebooks!

Linux, Laptops submitted by shrewduser Jun 14

Touch sensitive screens cost next to nothing, especially when its done by the manufacturer at scale. YI think they have an important role to play on the new generation of utlra portable linux based devices.

Touch sensitivity means being able to quickly jot down notes all over your powerpoint slides at university, playing touch sensitive games which are particularly suited to mobile devices, as well as a myriad of other exsisting tasks currently handled by other things (usually a pen and paper). 1 Comment »

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by tcpaulh Jun 3

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

For example the M1530 although specified with 90-100 degree vertical viewing angles, the reality is that there is at best a 15-20 degree vertical viewing angle before colour inversion occurs.

Vertical viewing angles at present do not appear to conform to stated specifications!

Dell have been promising better viewing angles since 2002 with Ultrasharp screens but these screens are still not available across the XPS line of laptops.

Please sort it out Dell and stop using the cheapest screen technology in your premium products.

Thank you. 9 Comments »

Instant-on PC

Desktops and Laptops submitted by drackham Jun 20

Think how much energy would be saved if PCs were functional as soon as they were turned on - just like a PDA. Users would then turn the PC off when it was not required - rather than leaving it on just in case it might be needed. It would also save a lot of time.

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 83 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.
