XPS M1330 with Gigabit Ethernet
Broadband and Mobility, XPS products, Laptops submitted by macavity

I think it would be really good for the M1330 to have Gigabit networking for various reasons.
- if you want to move or back up your music or some videos across your home network you actually need that speed
- most other similar laptops have it. I thought it's standard now and hardwired into every board?
- gigabit home routers are on the market
- I don't want to buy a product and be behind the market right from day-1.
I bought an Inspiron 4 years ago with only 10Mbps 802.11b wifi and regretted it already 6 months into the purchase.

Have publicly available torrents/ISOs of all driver and media discs
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by remover
06/15/07 **NOT NOW**
As a former dell technician and now computer repair shop technician, I frequently encounter Dell machines where there driver disc is missing and or out of date. Having worked on the phones I know it's not cheap for Dell to keep these in stock and to keep shipping them out.
My suggestion: use a free peer to peer download system to distribute these discs. BitTorrent. It's free and simple to set up. Along side the torrents you could have ISOs ready for download if the person is unfamiliar with BitTorrent.
While the most common consumer may not be able to utilize it to full effectiveness, it gives local technicians and either knowledgeable users or friends of the less-than-knowledgeable users will have access to the most up to date disk images.
Just my two cents. Scott Lyons

Stop mounting substandard displays on high end notebooks please...

If I go to buy a cheap notebook, I can blame me or the reasons why I have no money to buy a better one. But if I buy a GOOD notebook, as a Dell is expecting to be, even more if a Latitude or Precision, and you put a WSXGA+ Samsung like the SEC3350, or the other WXGA+ by Auo, and I paid a high end notebook to get a sandy, oily, dirty, yellowish display, with light leakage, whites not white, blacks not black, porr colors and bad viewing angles, may I get a bit angry? And why must I get angry and fax an angry letter to Escalation to have all solved, if it is my natural right to have a good to very good display out of the box? Don't you realize yet how often people avoid Dell for: 1) bad displays 2) bad customer care ??? TO me it is a pity. I really like all the rest in Dell. It is a pity...

Higher quality lcd screens for XPS M1530
Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by marcusesq
Jan 13
My brothers XPS M1530 arrived today fitted with a WSXGA+ screen and its horrible and grainy. I didn't get a chance to see weather its fitted with the Samsung or LG screen. I don't know weather this is a quality control issue or just penny pinching by using cheap screens but until its fixed there is no NO WAY I'll be placing an order. How anyone could design a laptop this good only to ruin the whole deal by fitting nasty screens is beyond me. It seems this is not an isolated case either.
To see the extent of the problem look

http://www.google.com ( search for "dell laptop grainy screen" )

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores
Linux submitted by dpic
Feb 14
Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores?

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
Software submitted by robinjfisher
02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

More OS Choices on the XPS Line!
Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by hoodedthing
12/30/07
Alright, the XPS laptop line is pretty good, but the OS choices are awfully limited. As a matter of fact, it's usually a choice between Vista or Vista Ultimate. Putting Linux, no-OS, and XP choices on all computers isn't a new subject, but I'm talking about the XPS line, because it seems to have been left out of the "partially implemented" part of those ideas.
The m1330 and the m1530 are both VISTA ONLY. I don't know about everyone else, but Vista pretty much sucks, and I would definitely re-platform any XPS I bought rather than deal with it. Can't we have a choice of XP, no OS, or Linux? Dell is really strangling these great computers by making Vista their mandatory OS.
The m1710 and m1730 do give you the choice of XP, but those laptops start at $2300. Why would you only offer XP on your high-end systems? It's not a new expensive product, it's still in demand, it's not anything inconvenient for Dell, so let's just stick it back in the pre-installion options.
So, they're great laptops, we want more OS choices because it's easy for us if we get the OS we want pre-installed, or at least don't have to wipe and then install one ourselves. I don't know how the legal whoop-dee-doo works with XP as opposed to Vista, but I know that a blank or Linux hard drive is free, and there's no excuse for not offering those.

XPS M1530.. 4LBS: FANTASTIC, 8600GS: YUCK, 2GB: ehhh?

15.40-inch display (CCFL up to 1680 x 1050, LED up to 1440 x 900) Core 2 Duo options from 1.5GHz (T5250) up to 2.6GHz (T7800) Crestline GM/PM 965 chipset with up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM GeForce 8400M or 8600M GS options (up to 256MB) Slot-loading Blu-ray / 8x DVD±RW Options for 802.11a/b/g/n, WWAN, Bluetooth HDMI, VGA, 1394, ExpressCard, (3) USB 2.0, Ethernet, fingerprint reader, media reader 2.0 megapixel (with CCFL) or 300k (with LED) cameras Weight supposedly 4 pounds to start (which is pretty light, we're assuming that's sans battery)"
4lbs with a 8600GT, GDDR3 would be an Extinction Level Event for Apple and HP and IBM and all your competitors. I heard that you might only support up to 2gb of RAM? doesn't bother me, but I can see how other people might care.
seriously thought.... 8600GS is an embarassment for an XPS product. Even your Vostro has an 8600GT option. Willing to sacrifice some battery life and an entire pound (so you are now at 5) for the 8600GT. Please make it an option and clarify the rest of the specs for us. THANK YOU!

Offer 256MB discrete Graphics on the m1330 also
submitted by ordinary_user
12/02/07
Please offer a 256MB Graphics card option also on the m1330 - just like the one offered on the m1530.
with apps like games, Google Earth, and Vista Premium, the 256MB seems like a necessity instead of an optional system requirement...

Build More Durable Products
New Product Ideas, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie
11/28/07
I would like Dell to build more durable products. Something that will last a minimum of 5 years.
And by "minimum" I mean exactly that. The product shouldn't die a death after 5years and 3 seconds. Dell should be building goods that last.

Backlit Keyboards

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.
I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available. This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Please do not make the XPS M1530 look like this!
XPS products, Simplify IT submitted by winoffice
10/09/07
Take a look at these pictures of the Dell XPS M1530.
After the XPS M1730, this is probably the ugliest Dell notebook that I have seen. What is especially ugly is the white keyboard, the small hole on the top inside of the lid, the protruding "key" below the down key, and the black Dell circular logo. I am praying to God that the XPS M1530 will not look like this.
- Make it look more like the XPS M1710 or better still the Inspiron XPS Generation 2 on the inside. At least make the keyboard black instead of white.
- On the outside of the lid, you can keep the background black, but make the Dell circular logo silver instead of black.
- Also, please remove the small hole on the top inside of the lid. If it is a web camera/PC video camera, then make it optional.
- Remove the protruding "key" from below the down key.
