Make those laptops display lid hinges unbreakable and offer a guaranteed 6 year free repair for a hinge that breaks

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mahei 02/19/07

I had two laptops in the past 6 years with a broken hinge at the display lid because i always have my notebook around with me at home, university, work, clients etc.

I will never again buy a laptop which does not look mechanically stable - it's a total waste of money to pay around EUR 1000,- for something that breaks just because some engineer saved 20 cents in the design of the construction. 1 Comment »

Give the same options and prices Worldwide

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by hurst Apr 25

Yesterday I configured an Inspiron 1420 in my country's Dell site. It had LESS POWERFULL options (CPU, graphics card, etc), and it was more expensive than an Inspiron 1420 in the US site. $1300 vs. $1800... I know shipment must be included...but $500?????
My only option is to wait for someone to visit the US or buy another brand 3 Comments »

Make it so you can turn of the mouse track pad on ALL Dell laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dave3281 May 12

The newer track pads are ultra sensitive and when typing in word you can easily have you cursor jump around. Most other manufactures all have the ability, but some of the Dells still don't have that functionality. And DON'T make it a function key make it an separate button above the track pad Comment »

Make Gigabit Ethernet Standard on Notebooks

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by techsage 02/24/07

This should be a given at the least for Small Business and above notebooks. Another option would be to at least allow an option for this with an additional charge. This feature is very important for those wishing to do quicker backups via the network (since this is faster than even via USB 2.0). Apple and Sony, if not others as well have this as standard at this point.

NOTE: I know that this is standard on XPS systems, but that is not good enough. 7 Comments »

Use the Intel network cards instead of Broadcom

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thefirstm Apr 25

I think that Dell should stop integrating the wired Broadcom 44xx card (or 57xx card for professional PCs). Since as far as I can remember, every Dell laptop has come standard with these, where the Intel counterparts are much better. Every Intel chipset since the ICH2 southbridge has come with an integrated ethernet controller, and since the ICH5 this has been a gigabit controller. Additionally, it seems as if it would be cheaper to use the Intel controller. To utilize it, all you have to do is add a PHY chip instead of a whole ethernet controller. I think Dell needs to get over its Broadcom thing and start offering gigabit controllers in its home and small business laptops by switching to the Intel integrated controller. 7 Comments »

XPS M1330 800Mhz ram support?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dscala Mar 2

Is the motherboard that's in the M1330 capable of handling 800Mhz (pc2 6400) ram? If so is the BIOS that the machine ships with? If not is there an BIOS flash that can be downloaded? If so can you supply a link please? 3 Comments »

S/PDIF dongle for M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by rsimon 09/03/07

It would be great if there was a dongle that allowed S/PDIF output independently of the HDMI cable. Anyone with a HDMI projector will be unable to have digital sound unless they buy one of those really expensive HDMI surround amps Comment »

Include Matte Sunfilter for Glossy-Screen Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by tigerforce Apr 17 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Many people (including me) love Dell's high resolution, high contrast glossy laptop displays. However they can become annoyingly unusable under harsh sun or florescent lighting. It would be nice if Dell included an optional filter that could be attached to the screen to block glare. I think more people would get the High-Def screens if Dell did this. (I'm thinking of something similar to this http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ComputerFilter/Home/ only with a matte anti-glare coating).

Optical or Coxial digital Audio out on Notebooks and Desktop.

Desktops and Laptops submitted by benjesuit 04/02/07

Optical or Coxial digital audio output connectors on Notebooks and laptops for direct digital input into a home theater system. Best way to input Dolby digital or DTS into a home theater system.

Aletrnatively, an HDMI connector. BUt not as many customers have newer home entertainment systems that have HDMI input. Installed base of home theater systems have either or both of optical or digital. 2 Comments »

DELL/XPS Gaming Clothing and Accessories Store

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, XPS products submitted by guardianxps 04/26/07

Dell should have a branded store for shirts, shorts, mousepads, themes, jackets, etc which have Dell and XPS branding. Currently, as an XPS 710 customer you receive a very cool H2C T-Shirt. What about those of us with a M1710? I think this would be cool, and I suspect other people like me would buy a XPS/Dell or even gaming branded item. 2 Comments »

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Students.....surely there's and opportunity here

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by perryphilipp Feb 9

Ok so I'm a graduating student so this is more for my peers, but surely there is the option to have and education option here in the UK, i know the USA has a dell education site.

Every year there are hundreds of thousands of students within our universitys, colleges, and high schools that seek computers for their studies....

Obviously there are the usual offers in September when everyone is starting the new educational year, but could there not be a whole educational sub-site, with competitions, organised DELL events at universities etc... much like Xbox Live is doing with live gigs etc,,,

There would be the opportunity for DELL to not only procure personal information of thousands of people to sell or do with what they want, but also it would improve their general image, and if someone has a computer that is good quality during university they tend to stick with that brand.

I am waiting for another DELL laptop for myself, as they are all i've ever had and quality-wise have never let me down, comparitively my friend sticks to sony and has done the last 10 years.

Its not all about discounts, its also about regular interaction with your customers, on various levels. 3 Comments »

Less plastic please on the XPS M1330 and other things

XPS products submitted by rach 11/09/07

I bought an XPS M1330 and got it delivered in September. My computer is 2 months old and now the painted silver parts around the frame are starting to discolour and showing black underneath it. I am not happy about this. I would like to see more magnesium on the next XPS 13.3 inch please. I would like to see an AL keyboard like on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Also while i am here lol if Dell could allow us to fully utilise the 256 of dedicated VRAM that the 8400GS card allows i would appreciate this as well. The Sony SZ offers a 64MB dedicated card and hybrid graphics. By offering more dedicated VRAM on the XPS products would be one way as well to help differentiate the XPS M1330 from such competitiors.

I would also like to see Dell offering 64 bit Vista/XP on the Dell XPS M1330. Right now users have to try and install this themselves if they want to fully utilise 4GB of ram.

I would also to see higher capacity 6 cell batteries as well. It seems to me that these Dell 6 cell batteries degrade to fast so i would like Dell to address this as well.

I also wouldn't mind to see swithcable graphics on the next XPS M1330 also.

Apart from that i am really happy. 1 Comment »

Connecting a Notebook to TV

XPS products, Laptops submitted by jog4joy Feb 9

I have an XPS notebook. In the User's Manual that came with the computer various options for connecting the to a TV are described. These options focus on using the HDMI or the S-Video outputs from the notebook. I recommend that an other, perfectly viable option be described. The option is to take the VGA output from the laptop and connect it to either a VGA or a DVI input on the TV. I use this option (DVI input) with my Sharp AQUOS 46' HD LCD TV. Excellent results. I see it as a perfectly viable alternative to HDMI as I do not need the fancy audio. And the cable is cheaper.

So I recommend that the User Manual include a section on the above option. 6 Comments »

M1330 2008!

XPS products submitted by q0987 Jan 12

Before I submit my idea it would be nice if someone could let me know what is the status of the slot-loading blu-ray drive which was promised for the M1330. I know that it has already been implemented into the new M1530 but what about the 13 inch model. Is it still in the works or has it been cancelled all together?
One other thing which concerns me are the SSDs. I mean they have already been released in the US for quite a while now yet in the UK/EU they are not even available as options.
If someone could get back to me on this it would be very helpful.

Now onto the main bit. I think that sometime during this year a major update to the m1330 should be carried out after the above issues have been addressed. I would like to recommend that the following components be updated:

Platform (from Santa Rosa to Montevina) MID-2008
Memory modules (to DDR3-800 w/ Montevina)
Processor (to Penryn - T9500) ALREADY RELEASED!
Graphics card (to Geforce 9 series - 9500M GS) OUT NOW!
Ethernet port (to Gigabit - c'mon its a XPS/business notebook)
Keyboard (backlit keys)
Solid State Drive (next gen w/ improved random write speeds)

Keep all other features/specs the same. Maybe use some magnesium or something (carbon fibre?) to further improve the quality of the product. Keep the LED backlit screen, blu-ray drive and SSDs. Don't cram in any more ports. Although you might want to design a new face for it similar to an alienware system!

The reason why I am stating this is because I think this notebook has the potential to be even better than it already is and these changes will help to make it truly the best. 3 Comments »

Setting to Disable Media Direct in BIOS

XPS products submitted by steve.bogdanski 09/28/07

Allow users to change/disable the functionality of the Media Direct button on Dell XPS systems. Not only do many busness environments not have any use for this feature. It has now become common place to hear the horror stories of those who have reformatted their harddrives and then have that button accidentally pushed while the computer is off. This immediately thrashes the partition table making the complete system useless until it is rebuilt from scratch.

All I'm asking for is the ability for the Media Direct button to be disabled when the system is not powered on. 20 Comments »
