Remind Dell to focus on the top ideas first [was: Stop posting Ideas until Dell catches up]

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 08/28/07

Seeing Dell's lack of response to most IdeaStorm Ideas, it seems they're pretty overwhelmed. To avoid giving them any further distractions, we should stop posting any Ideas unless they're more important than the top-rated Ideas that Dell still hasn't addressed.

To remind people what those are - here are the Ideas and their scores:

  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Idea for IdeaStorm contributors: Stop posting Ideas until Dell gets these done right - so we stop distracting them.

Idea for IdeaStorm voters: Vote any ideas down that are less compelling than the top-ideas so Dell can better focus on the top ones.

Idea for Dell: Implement the top ideas - and not some partial implementation on undesirable hardware - implement them for real.

[EDIT: In the comments people convinced me this is unrealistic.
Perhaps a better compromise would be for IdeaStorm posters to add footnote to every Idea telling Dell not to distract themselves with the new idea until they addressed the top ideas first.] 11 Comments »

Show which products can support Ubuntu/Linux

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tashmooclam 08/02/07

Assuming some people (like me) want to buy another laptop configuration besides the 2 offered with Ubuntu installed by Dell.
Dell should try to at least show which computers/components/configurations might be able to run Ubuntu/Linux.
We all know they can already run Windows. Which ones may not be appropriate for Linux? Some may have components for which drivers are rare or non-existant. 4 Comments »

You have to be inventive and innovative!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by grinser 08/24/07

What I miss from Dell is innovation and new inventions!
You don't get new product ideas until others are long ahead!

For example, who was the major one developing the new Windows Home Server boxes with Microsoft? Not dell, it was HP! Why wasn't it dell?

Another example: Tablet PC - where was dell when the first Tablets where introduced? Why do we only get a dell more than a "decade" later? You could do so much with and for this formfactor - build a designer centric tablet with high resolution display (at least 1440x900) and high quality inking capabilities (wacom technology) - look at other ideas to get a thought.

Where is a Dell UMPC? Plenty room for innovation here!

Where is the Dell All In One PC that successfully competes with Apple iMac in looks, functionality and price?

Where is a Dell Touchscreen PC like HP has? Do you want to stay behind until Apple introduces something similar to the iPhone but in computer formfactor?

Where is good advertising in europe? Why don't you make Dell attractive to students like in America? Students are potential customers for the future! Take a look at the Apple on Campus program and advertising! You might get it right in the usa, but NOT in europe! I want to be informed about your student discounts (through advertising (on website, on campus, ...), etc.) instead of having to ask myself via chat or hotline if you kindly give discounts!

Why can we only pay with credit cards in some european countries? For some people, credit card payments on the internet are still a show-stopper! (because they have non or of security concerns!)

I like your product designs, but you could do it much better! A product similar to the macbook pro would bring you many customers if perfectly marketed!

Why is your website so cluttered? At least on the german page there are often suddenly english texts and images. Images aren't correctly fitted, design is cluttered. Maybe get help from an design agency like frog design!

Please build a more clear and innovative website, readable font sizes and offers and please give us more detailed pictures of your products - we want high resolution images! Customers often hardly buy a product they never touched but with big images, a decision to buy is easier made than with those little pictures on the current website!

Roll out your retail strategy in Europe more quickly that you can compete with HP and others! Don't fixate on one particular partner, use every retail partner like others do! 8 Comments »

Provide HDMI + HD-DVD option in Desktops and Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by lorax1284 08/21/07

There is another idea for HDMI + BluRay: Dell seems to be exclusively supporting BluRay: I'd like to see them support HD-DVD, as well. 9 Comments »

Explain the customer's hardware choices

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by peyre 08/21/07

It would be helpful, especially to less computer-literate customers, to offer explanations for the hardware choices you have available when customizing your computer. This would be especially good for the CPU: telling the difference between Pentium D and Core2 Duo, for instance, and the significance of the Front-Side Bus. The video card section could tell you why you might want an NVidia vs. an ATI vs. the onboard Intel card. That sort of thing.

Also, the pop-ups for Intel and AMD chips aren't very helpful; they read kind of like advertisements for the two chips. A single page that gives basic information on what's different between the two would be much better. 5 Comments »

Include nvidia and ati video cards in ubuntu laptops and desktops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 08/02/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

When shopping for an Ubuntu Dell, I've noticed that it is not possible to order one with a video card from ATI or NVIDIA. For some users of Linux, such as those into 3D modeling work for artistic or scientific purposes, the Intel video card option may simply not be enough. And with laptops, upgrading or changing the video card is much more of a hassle than with desktops. Therefore, why is the option to buy a laptop with an nvidia or ati card listed under a Vista machine, but not under an identical machine pre-loaded with Linux?

Unfortunately, users that require both Linux and superior 3d acceleration performance may wind up forced into buying a Vista-preloaded Dell (and subsequently tossing the Vista disc in the garbage) just so they can have a Linux box with an ati or nvidia graphics card preinstalled. In addition to adding unnecessary cost to the consumer, this scenario will also distort sales figures information regarding Vista and Ubuntu.

Please consider offering Ubuntu-preloaded Dells with the option of an nvidia and/or ati graphics card preinstalled. Thank you.

Implemented

New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07

Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments »

Make ordering Notebooks in Europe similar to the US

Dell Web Site submitted by exul182 08/22/07

Where I come from (Romania), in order to get myself a notebook with my ideal configuration, i have to send the specs I want to a distributor which send me back a price, of course higher than the one in the countries that buy directly from Dell. Problem is they shove some parts down my throut that i don't really need. Ordering from the Dell site and being able to play with different configurations is only available in a hand-full of countries and we would greatly appreciate not having the intermediate companies in the way. Also..for some reason...some notebooks didn't make it on the market here...like the Inspiron 1420 ( we have the 1520 and the 1720..but no 1420). Please make it easier for all the countries in the EU as it is for Germany and England. No more intermediates. 7 Comments »

Customer service via Skype.

Service and Support submitted by benjesuit 08/28/07

In addition to standard call in CS, add peer to peer customer service via Skype.

Advantages:

1. Customers can send screen shots.
2. Files and updates can be transfered directly to the customer.
3. Conference calls can be done when troubleshooting needs the expertise of another rep for a specific problem.
4. Can use the chat feature to assist customers with code they may need to type in. They can cut and paste the code during troubleshooting. Even links can be sent directly to the customer which they can cut and paste into their browser.
5. Video conferencing. The rep can show the customer what he/she is talking about visually. The rep may have the specific model on hand and be able to point visually to the object in question. 9 Comments »

Blu-ray option on Ubuntu comptuers.

Linux submitted by jmxz 08/15/07

I can't find any of your ubuntu systems with a Blu-ray option. Yes, blu-ray (data) works fine with Linux.

Please add the Blu-ray option to each of your your Linux offerings.

Rename IdeaStorm FarceStorm - or stop making a mockery of how you respond to (and ignore) ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 08/28/07

Quoting a long-time IdeaStorm users's comments on a different Idea - user jorge summarized my biggest frustration with IdeaStorm

All Ideas that have been supposedly implemented have only been implemented in their weird spun way, never has the implementation been true to the idea. That alone tells you this is FarceStorm.
To new users that might seem like just an inflammatory rant - but look closely at Dell's actions and you'll see it's not an exaggeration at all.
They marked No OS as "already offered" - despite it being only offered on a few (mostly obsolete) models (like the Latitude D620 when the D630's been out for a long time now) and in a few regions --- and obviously it's not considered "already offered" by users on the models they want because it keeps getting re-posted no matter how often the re-merge it. They marked Linux as completed before they even released it in the US - and pretty much stopped moving on it even though it's only available on a few models in a few countries. The marked XP as "Implemented" even though it's only available on a few (mostly obsolete) models in a few countries. They marked "Same Discounts available for Windows and Linux" as "implemented" when in most countries they still offer Windows for cheaper than Linux and Windows seems cheaper on many models in the US on most days as well. They marked "No Extra Software Option" as "partially implemented" when they re-defined "no extra software" to allow exceptions for some of the software (anti-virus and google toolbars) that were most strongly opposed by the IdeaStorm posters -- and even so it's only available on a few models.

While jorge's quote and this subject's title appear to be exaggerated and/or jokes at first glance - look at Dell's actions and if there's any spin it's that FarceStorm might be too kind a term to use.

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this Idea until you've addressed the top-rated ideas which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses. 26 Comments »

M1730 should look more like the M1330

XPS products submitted by saleemohaib 08/16/07

I saw the pics of the upcoming Dell XPS M1730 laptop. I was really disappointed. I was not expecting something so ugly from Dell. By the way you can view the pics on this link:
Not for the faint-hearted people. Get ready before you go to this link and for those who have seen it before no need to see them again ;)

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2859 I

I also saw the M1330 and it look really nice. I think it might save Dell a lot of time and effort if they just made a 17' version of M1330 and call it M1730. Because I want a Santa Rosa XPS 17' laptop soon :)

I think including a 2 Megapixel camera on the M1730 would also be nice and color choice would be appreciated as available for M1330.

Looking forward to your coments.

By the way 'Dell' really appreciate the IdeaStrom. 27 Comments »

Similar website for all countries

Dell Web Site submitted by sidharthg 08/21/07

All the websites of Dell Worldwide should offer similar surfing experience at least during configuration. The US website provides so much more details for the products during customization, whereas, the Indian website is so bad and lacks so much info of the products during customization. It is only fair and good that a similar User Interface is used for all the local websites worldwide.

Also, it should be possible for a consumer of 1 Country to order Dell computer from the website of the other country, and Dell could charge maybe extra shipping charges if they apply. Sometimes, the products in US are better configured than in other countries. We should be able to order the computer from Dell USA to 'X' Country. That is what globalisation is all about. 3 Comments »

CarbonFibre or Stainless Steel for XPS 1330

Dell, XPS products submitted by realskript 08/28/07

How about a Carbon Fibre option, or a Stainless Steel.. or Brushed Aluminum option for the XPS 1330 ? (even all xps notebooks :S... minus the 2010 of course)

It would decrease delays because of "painting" the laptop...
It wouldn't "fade" over time..
More durable
Better look
Makes Dell a better competitor in "style"
Provides the Consumer with more options to better "personalize" their very own laptop.

By the way... i mean REAL CarbonFibre, aluminum etc... high quality material for a high quality product. 19 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.
