Sell the PS3 in dell.com/open with the PS3 Linux

Dell, Gaming, Linux submitted by jmxz 11/06/07

I am in the market to buy a PS3.

As a followup to the observation that Dell has perhaps the best deals anywhere on the PS3 However that particular great deal from Dell's web site is a bundle with stuff I really don't care about (Spiderman 3, etc).

Instead of (only) positioning it as a gaming platform, how about adding it to Dell.com/open as one of your Ubuntu-capable platforms as well. Yes, the PS3's run Ubuntu, so it's already an OS Dell's comfortable with.

Some Dell competitors provide good information about linux programming the PS3.

So, the Idea is that Dell should add the PS3 to Dell.com/open. You don't really need to make any changes - seeing that Linux is already supported there; and noone expects pre-installed software on a gaming console anywhere. A nice to have would be a printed list of instructions (like in the link above) walking the user through the process.

Instead of Spiderman3 and games, please also offer accessories like the HDMI->DVI converter cable people some may need if your monitor doesn't have component video or HDMI inputs.

Yes, I know it's silly; but all-other-things-being-equal, I'd (and probably many of your dell.com/open customers) probably feel better buying the PS3 from someone who helps me get Linux running on it than someone who doesn't. 17 Comments »

Intel X38 Motherboard in an XPS 720

Desktops, Gaming, XPS products submitted by thomasp94 12/17/07

Create a new XPS 720 system (along side the existing configurations) with an Intel X38 chipset motherboard in it (like the one used in the new XPS 420). This would cater to those of us that have no interest in SLI but want the 720 style tower with Windows XP. The X38 motherboard will also support the new line of Intel processors due out in Q1 of 2008, where as the current Nvidia chipset boards will not. 21 Comments »

Gaming, XPS products submitted by jediwill71 12/18/07

https://h20435.www2.hp.com/Default.aspx< a look at this beast. I know dell can make an XPS system that can compete with the same varity and amount of options and within the same price range. I know Dell has the XPS 700 series but not with the same amount of options for upgrades. 15 Comments »

Make an open source gaming console

Gaming, New Product Ideas submitted by rehtneug 12/27/07

Be the FIRST to make an open source gaming console. Allow people to make and sell their own games, and manufacturers to create games. These games could also be extended in some ways for open source development. Creators can also extend the media capabilities of the console, allowing them to develop special programs for whatever they want. Incorporate an open source web browser, maybe just firefox, allowing people to create extensions for all kinds of web based media.

Basically, make an open gaming and media console. Limit the proprietary aspects as much as possible. Media Center doesn't work for the general public, it's too limiting. No one can quite figure out what people want in their living rooms, so let the cutting edge folks build it. 1 Comment »

Adding the option of new VGA's as Nvidia/ATI release them

Desktops, Gaming, XPS products submitted by fahdriyami Jan 8

Nvidia and ATI have now been releasing new lines of GPU's, Nvidia with its new line of 9000 Series and ATI with the 3000 Series, i think the XPS Gaming Desktops should be up to date with these new line of graphic cards, instead of sticking with the old ones, the cards support PCI-E 2.0 but they are backwards compatible, so Dell dont really have to change the motherboards they are currently using. Their next XPS gaming Desktops should have these new high end graphics cards with motherboard that supports them. Comment »

Using more AMD Processors & AMD Gaming Platforms for XPS Desktops

Dell, Desktops, Gaming, XPS products submitted by fahdriyami Jan 9

Dell seems to lack using AMD processors and mostly stick with Intels, now, Intel processors are powerfull and overclockable, but somehow they seem to lack reliablity in the long run. Intel have just released their new line of 45nm processors which require less power.
AMD have just released their 65nm processors (Phenom) series but there was a bug in the L3 cache. This is to be fixed in the 1st quarter of 2008 following the release of 45nm Phenoms, i suggest that Dell takes advantage of AMD's new true Quad core processor as it is very powerfull and also has less power consumption (thats what Dell is aiming for), and could easily Overclock safely by using AMD OverDrive technology. Also AMD's QuadFX gaming/enthusiast platform should be used to ensure high performance for Dell XPS Gaming Desktops, with the QuadFX Platform, you could have a total of eight cores with two Phenom Processors both at 3.0GHz. That would be great for next generation games. The only motherboard for this platform is the Asus L1N64-SLI WS (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=136&l3=486&l4=0&model=1530&modelmenu=1) Also AMD's new "Spider" Platform is a unique gming platform that combines AMD Phenom, AMD 7-Series Chipset and ATI's 3000 Series Graphic Cards creating the Ultimate Gaming machine, which should be a bonus for the XPS Gamig line. 14 Comments »

need to offer games free!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Gaming submitted by junior Jan 12

I think Dell Should offer games when someone is building a gaming PC, maybe even one more section for games on Dell.com and Dell.ca for Americans and also Canadians. maybe thibk about this. Offer games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Micrsoft Flight Simulator. Like what the Alienware site is doing offering games like Crisis. 13 Comments »

Laptops: Bigger LETTER Keys

Dell, Gaming submitted by zanlok Jan 27

I know my image is nonideal, but what I really want is a full-size qwerty keyboard on my 17" laptop. Especially my XPS 1730. I'd sacrifice the numpad for this. I'd also gladly pay $50 extra! This was admittedly mentioned here. BUT: that idea got merged with something about having a numpad. No,no,no: bad moderator. 8 Comments »

Dell all-in-one Desktop Computer and printer

Desktops, Printers and Ink submitted by colep04 02/27/07

Why not make an all-in-one (for Consumers) Dell computer (such as the Apple imac) but, also a small added printer in the back of the all-in-one. 9 Comments »

partner with APPLE: sell MacOS for Dell hardware

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Software submitted by zanlok Feb 2

Seriously! Consider this: MacOS now runs on top of Linux with PC hardware - Intel and Nvidia. Why not? This can be more choice for the consumer. Also, why not create new products with them in the iPod space. 13 Comments »

Dell CrystalOne

Monitors and Displays submitted by jwr200218 Feb 2

Dell CrystalOne --
To move ahead of the game, to blow Apple out of the water not only in performance, but also in design and aesthetics. Why not the Dell CrystalOne? It is the best of Dell All-in-One and its best in monitors. Perhaps even ambient lighting and 1080p as options (even on Crystal now). It could even be in conjunction with a Dell Home Media Server to compete with those released at CES 2008.

Its marketing slogan could be, "Dell. Clearly. Crystal." or just "Dell. Clearly."

Liquid cooled video cards

Desktops, XPS products submitted by junior Jan 28

I have heard this from one person, but don`t know if other people have mentioned this idea. His name is eaglewonj. The Dell XPS 720 H2C has the liquid cooled CPU (Central Processing Unit), but you need to put a liquid cooled GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in this gaming Rig. How can you offer a high end gaming desktop with no liquid cooled GPU
Its time to put these in as Standard.

Thank You 7 Comments »

Better bezel security

Servers and Storage submitted by aitor_ibarra Jan 29

Having lockable bezels for servers and drive arrays is great, but I've noticed that all recent Dell equipment seems to be using the same key combination. This means that the lockable bezel doesn't provide any real security as getting hold of a key with the same combination is very easy. If your equipment is housed in a shared rack (common in a colo situation), this is quite a serious concern.

Please...

1) vary the combination more often
2) better still, use combination locks (3 or 4 digits) instead of keys, or offer these as an option 1 Comment »

List electricity saved on "Green" Inspiron 531

Environment submitted by nathanb Jan 29

I'm very interested this year in continuing to lower my electric bill since I've had great success doing so by just exchanging light bulbs to the more energy efficient ones. Anyway, I'm in the market for a new PC--I purchased mine in response to the Y2K hype in 2000, so I'm due. I noticed you have a "green" PC with the Inspiron 531, but nowhere on the site could I find an estimate of the amount of electricity I could save by purchasing this PC. Is this information available? And, if so, wouldn't it be a good idea to list that along with the fact that the purchase would have the same effect as not driving for 8 weeks. I shopped for a new refrigerator last year for the same reason. . .and manufacturers there include amount of electricity saved per year by purchasing an Energy Star appliance. I realize that a PC can be turned off every night, unlike a refrigerator, but most of us leave ours on for many days on end. A handy table with different scenarios of use and electricity saved would be helpful. I'm guessing that businesses/schools would be interested in information like this as well since many I know are actively seeking ways to lower their bills. Just an idea. Thanks for the opportunity to post ideas too. 5 Comments »

Sell Pentax Pocket Jet Series printers

Printers and Ink submitted by busterlee Jan 29

Since Dell has a huge notebook consumer base they should sell Pentax PocketJet Pocket Jet series of portable printers. I think that they would be a great compliment to the increasing laptop market as well as a favorites of business professional and student who are constantly on the go but in need of quality printouts. New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07

Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments »

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.
