Make all AC Adapters 3-prong

submitted by iolanthe Jan 28

As there have been several stories online attributing a "tingle" sensation when using notebooks (of any kind, not just Dell!) that employ an AC adapter with only 2 prongs, Dell should make a 3-prong adapter the standard. The third prong provides a ground, which allows for a much more comfortable feeling as opposed to any kind of tingling or shock. Dell, please do this for the comfort and peace of mind of your customers!

You even talk about it on your own blog:

easy capital letters on a keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by sean22 Jan 29

Instead of holding shift and presing the letter you need at one to get a upper case letter, you could press shift then type that letter with out holding the shift key. But if you need more than one letter you can still hold the shift key and type!!! 11 Comments »

Dell submitted by phubert Jan 30

A recent survey of readers by The Register highlights perceptions of IT companies.

I don't go by others' perceptions, but businesses that MARKET PRODUCTS cannot AVOID doing so.

Here's the link to the PDF download... Dell does and doesn't fare so well.

Have you Dell guys already been reviewing this one??

Make Interchangable Laptop Covers/Skinz!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by melissacann2 Jan 30

I for one, would LOVE to see you make interchangable laptop skinz not made of stickers! I hate the thought of sticking some gummie cover on my laptop that would peel off in a few weeks. Than I'm stuck with a sticky mess! I want to be able to look at something cool and fresh every now and then and to able to change the look of my laptop would be cool! 10 Comments »

Gift options

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by mo Jan 30

There should be an option when shipping PC’s or accessories, a gift option! It should be packed in a nice box, or there should be a variety of boxes to choose from .and the packaging list should not be put on the box

Birthday?
Graduation?

Appropriate boxes for each...

Selection of color???

Or, put the note -inside-? (or an optional inside note "To: xxx" "From: yyy" etc. Could all be done from a Dell web page (enter your own sentiment, etc.)

Should be EASY for Dell to automate! Comment »

Program to automatically install drivers

Service and Support submitted by mo Jan 30

I think Dell should make a program for reinstalling the drivers; it should automatically download the appropriate drivers for that computer and install them in order it is supposed to be, because some people just install any driver they see under their service tag on the web, don’t even know the order how to install them. 3 Comments »

Bluetooth Number Keypad Option for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by rietnau Jan 27

I would like to see Dell offer a Bluetooth number pad option for laptops. The world is adopting wireless options and a search for bluetooth number pad's has turned up nothing. The closest options to external number pads are 2.4 ghz and cable based. There is one option though, and it is the Logitech Dinovo Keyboard set. I am not about to pay $170 for a keyboard set when all I want is a number pad.

The XPS M1330 only has two usb ports and connecting a number pad (whether 2.4 ghz or cable based) to it would limit it to one. I would also like to keep the number of peripherals sticking out of my laptop to a minimum, so a Bluetooth number pad would be ideal.

Dell has done a great job offering the Bluetooh travel mouse and a number pad would probably be well received. The technology is already out. Dell should be the first to offer the Bluetooth number pad option. 2 Comments »

Enough with the blue LED's already!

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by chewd Jan 15

A small, sharp, pinpoint of blue light is absolutely the worst thing you could possibly do to your night vision! Theres a reason the panel lights in aircraft are always red, red light does not leave retinal artifacts that impair night-vision.

I know blue LED's are trendy, everythings got them these days. And bluetooth has "blue" right in the freakin name. But those of us who use notebooks for work, and work at night, find blue LEDs very irritating.

Blue being a very short wavelength is very penetrating. You can light an entire room with one blue LED, whereas red being a long wavelength is ideal for indicators & such as it does not carry as much.

Give us the option of changing the color of the LED's either through BIOS, software, or even physically replacing them (or just replacing a colored lens). Maybe it would be possible to let us turn down the brightness a tad.

It would be nice not to have to cover my new laptop with little bits of tape. 30 Comments »

Allow notebook batteries to be charged outside the notebook as well

submitted by eaglewonj Jan 24

Design notebook batteries that can be charged outside the notebook on the same power adapter. This would allow two or more batteries to be charged at once. It also allows the laptop to remain away from a power adapter and have batteries brought to it that are charged remotely.

Perhaps this could be done with the notebook docks. Dock and charge the laptop and the extra battery. 2 Comments »

Expand Wireless USB to All Systems; Add to Peripherals

Broadband and Mobility, Printers and Ink submitted by coachcg Jan 22

Dell - Thanks for being one of the first to market with notebooks containing wireless USB - the Inspiron 1525 and the Inspiron 1720 ( http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/01/03/40345.aspx ). Could you accelerate WUSB implementation into all your notebooks and then into all your desktops too?

Could you also work on getting WUSB transmitters installed in all your printers and peripherals?

Lastly, it would be great for those that have already purchased existing notebooks if you could work on getting them a wireless USB upgrade - possibly as an express card and/or PCMCIA add on for laptops.

For those who do not know about Wireless USB, here is a good article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB

Bluetooth has been nice and probably will need to remain in notebooks for a time, the speed and range of this new WUSB technology will allow us to have much more mobility in our workspace and reduce and/or eliminate the need for docking stations. 7 Comments »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 242 Comments »

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers
