Get rid of that ridiculous new checkout system!

Dell Web Site submitted by joeevil5000 06/02/07

I have worked at a Dell Direct Store kiosk for the past 6 months, and Dell's checkout system has been flawless. But now, they are experimenting with a new flash based checkout sytem. It has done nothing but create website problems, and screw up orders. Yes, it's prettyer, but the layout is confusing, and aparenty the webmasters at Dell are'nt very good with flash, because most aspects of it fail. PLEASE do not change the checkout system! 8 Comments »

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Make Standard-format monitors available on all desktop systems

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by lmoseley 06/02/07

The whole idea of WIDESCREEN monitors for desktop computers is backwards from what the customer really needs. Those of us who work WORK with our computers need to see as much as possible of a page on our screens. Same with websurfing... most websites are oriented vertically, rather than widescreen. A 19" widescreen is shorter, top to bottom, than a 19" standard format screen, making the text smaller and harder to read and limiting the part of the page that is visible. Many of the new Dell offers come ONLY with Widescreen monitor options.

Same with laptops... give the customer the choice, widescreen or standard format. 8 Comments »

TheOpenCD.org should be an option for any Dell OS, regardless if Windows or Ubuntu

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 05/26/07

Dell should offer the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option for customers to select when configuring their purchase. Again, irrelevant of Windows or Ubuntu. TheOpenCD offers the following Software Suites for Free and without the usual Bloatware that irritates customers:

Design - Blender, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, NVU, Scribus, Tux Paint.

Games - Battle for Wesnoth, Enigma, Neverball, Sokoban YASC.

Internet - Azureus, FileZilla, Firefox, Gaim, HTTrack, RSSOwl, Thunderbird, TightVNC, WinSCP.

Multimedia - Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers, Stellarium.

Productivity - MoinMoin, OpenOffice.org, PDFCreator, Notepad2.

Utilities - 7-zip, Abakt, Clamwin, GTK+, HealthMonitor, Workrave.

Due to an unpredictable change I alter my idea to !

TheOpenDisc.com CD should be given out if TheOpenCD.org is not complete enough for you! Its pretty much the same thing, opensource software for the price of Free yet many more apps! So a win win for all! Yeay!

The ability to turn off by hardware microphone and webcam

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bugmenot 02/20/07

Microphone and webcam integrated in every notebook could be very usefull but it's necessary that we can turn off them by hardware with something like the button that turn off some wireless card in some notebook.

It's very important for the privacy.. in this way we can turn on them only when we need them 3 Comments »

Keyboard with no Windows logo

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by lucabrivio 02/27/07

It would be nice to have a keyboard without Windows logos, especially for those that use other operating environments than Microsoft Windows.

There would be several alternatives to have a Windows' logo on the "Super" key, including:
- having a Dell logo instead;
- having a custom key (maybe less cost-effective?);
- having a key with no logo, and perhaps several stickers with Windows, KDE, GNOME logos, Tux, etc.;
- having some other nice icon;
- ...

Desktop keyboards, which have two Windows logo keys, offer even more chances for alternatives. 23 Comments »

See only Linux compatible components when building your own system

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by frozenfire 05/03/07

It would be nice when building you own system on the Dell site, you can tick a box and then it doesn't show the components that aren't Linux compatible. 3 Comments »

$299 Laptop

Laptops submitted by jack_satan Feb 1

Dell already sells a completely functional (albeit low-end) Vostro 1000 for $399 with a 15.4 in. screen, 80 GB HDD, Windows, and free shipping. If they just offered the same computer with a 14.1 in. screen, open-source operating system, and 60 GB HDD, they should be able to sell it at $299 with an even better profit margin.

Furthermore, besides for the public relations coup from offering the first fully functional sub $300 laptop, Dell would also be opening up a whole new market of buyers that have been clamoring to get their hands on the OLPC XO, Asus EEE PC, and Intel Classmate. 20 Comments »

Make the battery sizes an industry standard.

Laptop Power submitted by rotthund 05/01/07

I remember an old Dell laptop I had for work. It had a battery bay and a media (CD-ROM/floppy drive). The batteries could be installed in either bay. Two batteries could be installed even.

AA, AAA, etc battery sizes are standard and makes life so easy, people don't think about it. I like the fact that my Nikon and a Pentax camera can use CR-V3 or AA batteries. AAs will run all of our cameras! 1 Comment »

Air Purifier / Filter for the Dell desktop PC

Desktops, Environment submitted by kyliemanders 04/06/07

Most people leave their desktops on 24/7. Since we already have a cooling fan in place why not give us a removable cleanable air filter.
This would keep the inside of our Dell PCs free from unsightly dust as well as purify the air we breath.
You can make additional profits selling replacement filters. These could be scented or offer health benefits such as reducing allergens. These would be applicable for both Vista and Linux PCs. 16 Comments »

All Dell products should be available globally

Dell submitted by hjwasson 04/25/07 **NOT LIKELY**

Consumers should not be restricted on what is available to them based on geographic location!

I've learned that Dell does not offer all models of computers outside of the United States. That seems strange, since Dell is a direct vendor, using web sites and toll-free phone numbers to make sales - and the products for the most part aren't even made in the US! Dell should offer all their products to everyone, regardless of where they live. If Dell wants to charge a little more for the shipping, I'm sure the users would be willing to accept that to have more choice. 12 Comments »

Surveillance DVR

Operating Systems submitted by dellman1 04/25/07

Im here to get honest thoughts on a possible DVR type of system for Dell to manufacture and distribute.

I would like to ask all of you on your personal thoughts towards the Surveillance industry and if you think it might serve to some use to have a possible branch for DVRs in the industry provided by Dell.

Do you think that a small size Windows XP Embedded system with a case design such as a ITX pc would serve the current Surveillance industry well at this point in time or the near future perhaps?

Also incorperating possible other features, such as built in wi-fi, or other os such as linux or unix?

Maybe even Towards the Mobile DVR industry as well.

Incorperating ideas such as low profile casing so that the devices can be well hidden and in small areas as well.

I also acknowlage that most current DVR systems have either Windows XP Embedded, or Linux because it is simple to install there video software on for there cameras.
As well as the fact that you havent got the interferance of other programs running behind the scenes.

But i am here to find out, or even suggest the idea of Dell, crafting a system to meet the current surveillance industries needs.

Please feel free to share your opinions with me and let me know what you think.

Thanks for your time. 2 Comments »

PS2 Support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by cornettt 04/25/07

I know I am not the only one to run into this problem. Dell needs to make PS2 support standard on all desktop computers. Every new computer we have ordered comes with only USB ports and no PS2 ports.

Since most wireless keyboard/mouse sets, Microsoft's & Logitech's included, come with the keyboard connector in PS2 only they don't work without trying to find an adapter online. Until wireless keyboard/mouse makers do away with PS2 connectors Dell should keep the ports as standard on their computers. 28 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

PCMCIA slot for notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by stdu00 02/23/07

I think the PCMCIA slot should be available on every notebook, more and more notebook have only PC Express slot, but till now a lot of pcmcia cards are not available in PC Express.
Actually, I wanted to change my notebook for a brand new Core 2 but I have to keep it just because I use a 3G PCMCIA card everyday.
Thx for listening 5 Comments »

Eliminate Outsourcers Paid By The Call

Service and Support submitted by cooter666 04/23/07

Dell uses north american based outsourcers too, and they are just as horrible, if not worse, than India's call centers. The north american call centers are paid by the call, and push their agents to end the call within 15 minutes, most often without resolving anybody's issue. They say these very stupid scripts at the beginning and end of the call, pushing these email surveys for you to fill out about their quality of support, then stumble through some tshooting steps from an online tshooting tool, then ask their "mentors" for help a dozen times, then put you off the phone running diagnostics for the hundredth time, with no resolution in site. They lose and hire people so often, almost none of them know anything except how to play W.O.W. If your frustration leads you to escalate to a manager, they put another agent on the line pretending to be a manager, just frustrating you further.

This article is exactly like a north american Dell

http://dir.salon.com/story/tech/feature/2004/02/23/no_support/index.html< the Dell owned north american call centers at least spend some time on the call and try to help, and seem to have much more training. Comment »

Sub $400 Notebook

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by kevindication 04/23/07

Typically, notebooks are only offered in 3 main styles per product cycle: Low-end, mid-range and high-end. This makes sense until you consider that once the next product cycle comes around, the notebooks from the previous cycle are suddenly and violently destroyed en masse. Please offer the option to buy last cycle's models at sub $400 prices. I will buy one for sure. 2 Comments »

5 minute "battery backup" on notebooks to allow fast main battery switching

Laptop Power submitted by hjwasson 04/23/07

I would like to see Dell notebook computers incorporate a small internal battery that would allow users to quickly swap out their depleted primary battery with a fresh one - without having to power off or hibernate the notebook first. Hibernation sometimes fails on resume (although far less often than Standby), and shutdown/reboot takes too long when you're in the middle of an important meeting. I've been told that Apple MacBooks allow you to swap out batteries without shutting down first.

Another alternative would be to have hot-swappable module device bays that would allow placing a secondary battery in the bay (in place of the optical drive). This is done on the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad line of notebooks. If the notebook could run off the secondary battery while the primary battery was being swapped, that would be fine, too. 20 Comments »

More Windows XP Support . . .

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by ahtistudios 04/23/07

I read on the Ideastorm homepage today about Dell finally agreeing to package Windows XP with more of their systems, in response to the posts here requesting such an action. As an audio professional and computer enthusiast very familiar with Microsoft's continued pattern of releasing operating systems before the bugs are worked out, I'm happy to see this. I'm actually in the market for a new desktop right now, and can't use Vista, as many of my hardware pieces and software programs don't work with it. I'd like to buy an XPS410, but after having spoken with two Dell sales reps at different times (one before Dell's announcement to have increased XP support, and one today), I've found that the only XPS system to come with XP is the 710. I don't need the advanced cooling system or graphic cards of the 710. I just need a Dual Core desktop, priced competitively, running at an optimal speed (the 410 is the only one that fits my needs, without adding extra stuff I don't need). If Dell can add XP to their Dimensions, why not the XPS series in full? 1 Comment »

Make Laptops more Durable & Water Resistant

Laptops submitted by jrhoesly 04/23/07

Dell need to make all of their laptops more resistant to fluids and accidental spills. (keyboard, ports, etc.) Dell should really come out with a line of extremely ruggedized and high performance laptops and tablet pc's to complete with the Panasonic Toughbook. 8 Comments »
