Ease of use ideas for XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products, Laptop Power submitted by karimsisi Aug 9

Aspects of XPS 1530 that make it uncomfortable to use
1. Weak blue indicator lights (hard disk, WiFi, On/Off status, Battery recharging, Caps lock, Num lock, Scroll lock). I need to concentrate on the light to figure out which one is it. Better to use a brighter color and/or bigger indicator lights.
2. Placement of some of the above indicators is inconvenient, namely the Power, Hard disk, and Recharging. All indicators should be conveniently placed below the screen.
3. Instability when the battery is removed due to the lack of a fourth leg. The fourth leg is mounted on the battery and hence laptop loses stability when it is removed.
4. Lack of shortcut keys on the function buttons. There are only 3 present namely F1 (Hibernate), F3 (Battery indicator), and F8 (CRT/LCD). Useful buttons would include WiFi on/off, Bluetooth on/off (notice that both should be controlled separately), mouse pad on/off, screen on/off.
5. The depressed video/audeo control buttons require more force to make them work than do keyboard buttons, hence inconvenient.
6. I can not use my video camera's DVDs (which are smaller in size) in the DVD slot, as well as not knowing when the DVD is reading/writing due to the lack of an indicator light. Comment »

The Next Big Thing: Gas-Powered Computers!

Environment, Desktops and Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by noxo Aug 9

Picture this: The Ultimate Portable. Free from the constraints of electric wires, you can go anywhere! This computer will run off the same gasoline that you can find at any gas pump. Put the gas tank under the bottom of the system, and mold it to create a comfortable, user-friendly bottom that can sit on their legs, thus bringing the laptop back to the LAP again! The small engine can sit out of sight and out of mind on the back of the system. The cooling fans can pull up cool air from the gas tank underneath it, also creating a quieter and cooler computer. On the side of the system, it will have a filler neck that is identical to a car's so that you can fill up at the pump. No more need for charging batteries anymore. Experts say that gas prices will soon be dropping dramatically, so this will save you a ton of money too!

Of course, Dell engineering will need to create a design for this idea, but below is a picture to get a general idea.

Gas Powered Computer

This idea could also be expanded by attacking a larger gas tank and engine, the possibilities are endless! Just imagine an engine that powers your car and your laptop at the same time. You could do this with any vehicle. Laptop-motorcycles, Laptop-planes, Laptop-trains, Laptop-boats, or anything that needs an engine. 123 Comments »

XPS m2030 - Ubuntu 8 please

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by dreamsculptorz Aug 9

XPS m2010 was a great concept, but I think that if you put together an XPS m2030 with Ubuntu 8/3d Desktop, & VirtualBox [ w/ XP Media Center & WOW client installed on it within the preloaded in VirtualBox Workstation], 250 GB HD space & 2.5+ GBs of RAM and marketed it as the WOW: Warlock --- you guys would have an absolute hit on your hands. Provided you solved the heat handling issue and packaged it with a backpack-style carrying case, It is one machine that would create loyalty because the could just come to you firm to delivery the machine that delivers every thing. The design profile & flexibility was ingenious, but the price point was too high maintain sales with offering something special. That is it. I know that it sounds crazy, but gamers are looking for something over the top, flexible, stable, and that allows them to handle a diverse array of tasks. This would be it. Comment »

Button to delete new replies from a certain Idea

IdeaStorm submitted by james-94 Aug 9 **UNDER REVIEW**

There should be a little X beside all of your new replies so that if you keep getting replies from an idea but you don't want to keep getting replies anymore you can click the X so it will stop sending new replies to you. This would be useful if you only commented on a topic once but then didn't want to keep talking in that idea but you keep getting new replies from other people everyday. I find this very anoying.

Software for online shopping

Advertising and Marketing, Software submitted by dawud1213 Aug 9

Internet advertising market in a social networking atmoshere. What I mean, is developing a format for taking advantage of the advertising market in a social networking atmoshere. Like, e.g., Facebook and Myspace use behavioral technologies to try to send relevant ads to thier members. But it's obvious that people don't want to see ads about products/services that don't interest them, and companies are gearing up their technologies to try and track people to see where they go on the internet to obtain information about their LIKES so that they can use that information to send Direct advertisements about their LIKES, that is well relating to their Likes. To my knowledge, there is no atmoshere that STORES information about a person's SPECIFIC PREFERENCES, and this is the idea me and my partner would like to create. 9 Comments »

Don't place mouse buttons on side of touchpad on Mini Inspiron

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by hollyberry Aug 9

On the HP 2133 Mini-Note the mouse buttons are on the side of the touchpad and it is very awkward and uncomfortable. I don't know if the buttons are like that on the Mini Inspiron or not but if they are please change it to the traditional mouse buttons under the touchpad. I realize it is space saving for small pcs like that and I also realize it may be too late to do anything about it on the first model, but maybe something can be changed about it on the next model. I'm sure the mouse buttons can be squeezed in there! 8 Comments »

finer grade notebook fan controls and minimum speed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by claudio_ch Aug 10

Seeing other ideas regarding either noise or too hot laptops I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to give users more fine grade control about the fans. This would need on one part hardware which allows fans to turn at a whole range of speeds at not just 1 or 2 speeds and software which would allow the setting of the minimum speed of a fan.

Thus if I want to avoid my laptop getting noise when the fan kicks in I could tell it to run at some minimum speed - at which it is still quiet enough for me - all the time, minimizing the need for the fan to go really loud.
This is also suggested in http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10091345/Dell_Studio_15_fan_noise

On the other hand if I want my laptop to stay cool because I actually have it on my lap and don't care about noise or battery consumption I could set it to full speed all the time to keep temperature low. This could be made more intelligent, by having me not set a minimum speed, but rather an upper limit on temperature. E.g. if normally the fan would kick in only when system temperature is above 60*C, I could select to lower it to e.g. 45*C. The fans would then kick in earlier to keep my laptop cool, even if the hardware itself wouldn't need it as it can stand higher temperatures. Comment »

How to compete better with iTunes / iPod

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by smharris Aug 10

There is a need for an MP3 player that real time control of playback speed and pitch. See the shareware program Amazing Slow Downer. Apple has recently added a limited capability to slow down or speed up the playback of Audible.com books. This capability needs to be broadened to all MP3 files (e.g., Teaching Company courses) and deepened (greater control over speed and pitch). The advantage of full real time control is that it makes it easier for us to match the playback speed to our ability to comprehend material. This varies our familiarity with the material and our energy and clarity at the time. Too slow allows our minds to wander. Too fast overwhelms us. The goal ought to be to find the speed that best allows us to lose ourselves in listening. Losing ourselves in activity is the essence of pleasure. Comment »

Display similar refurbished computers after a customer configures a new Dell

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Environment submitted by getgreg Aug 10

To me one of the biggest frustrations of buying a Dell, is after you configure and buy your dream machine, you sometimes have to wait weeks for it to be built and shipped. Refurbished Dells, on the other hand, are already built and ready-to-ship.

It would be great if after you finish configuring a Dell, the site would search the refurbished inventory for computers matching your specs and give you the option to buy a refurb instead.

I bet a lot of customers who won't ever find their way to dell.com/outlet would take a cheaper, quick-shipping refurb if it's presented to them this way. Doing this would probably help move refurbished computers faster which will further ensure that Dell sees top dollar for them.

Also, moving refurbished computers before new computers will also help Dell's commitment to go carbon-neutral. By selling already built refurbs first, Dell ensure that they don't consume energy and materials building new computers when a refurb will suffice.

Seems like everyone wins on this one. 17 Comments »

More Slots for Desktops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by nakajimy Aug 10

More than 2 slots for Dell desktop (Mini)tower computers can be more convenient for those who want to use an extra removable harddisk drive in addition to a 3.5 inch floppy drive, a regular CD/DVD slot, and another slot for, say, sound interface, etc. In fact, there is no Dell desktop computer which has 3 regular built-in slots in addition to a floppy drive. I really wish to use 3 built-in slots!! 3 Comments »

Maximum RAM Standard

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by getgreg Aug 10

I think it's time for Dell computers (particularly notebooks) to just come with with the maximum amount of RAM the computer can handle. Practically all the issues users have posted relating to RAM could be solved by just including the maximum amount of RAM at a fair and competitive price.

If web retailers can sell 4GB of RAM for about $100 and stay in business, I can only imagine how cheap RAM is for a huge manufacturer like Dell. Sure, including the maximum amount of RAM will cost more, but that cost increase could be partially offset by savings in assembly time and labor caused by not allowing for variations in installed RAM. Also, for notebooks and all-in-ones, by eliminating the RAM as a common user-replaceable part it may be possible to cut costs on enclosures.

Obviously, I have know way of knowing if the economics are there to make this work but it seems worth looking into and maybe even trying on the premium lines of notebooks (XPS and Latitude). 11 Comments »

When calling tech support, Dell should TELL the customer which support center they're being directed to!

Service and Support submitted by phubert Aug 11

When I call IBM support and when I called Discover recently, I was FIRST told which center I was being directed to.

IBM is usually Atlanta. In this case I believe Discover was Utah.

Let us know up front! Others do it and are setting the better example! 16 Comments »

Offer an alternative power supply

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jscott Aug 11

A DC-DC power supply is needed as an option for computers in locations that are powered by alternative energy, such as wind, water or solar. It doesn't make sense to invert DC energy to AC, so I can plug in my computer, when the first thing my computer does is to transform that AC power back to DC to run the motherboard, fans, drives, etc. Typical inverters and AC-DC transformers run at 70-80% efficiency each (and produce heat). DC-DC transformers can be 95% efficient or more.

The home and workplace of the future will have DC sources of energy (sun, wind, etc.), as well as AC from the grid. Provide a DC-DC alternative to the standard AC-DC power supply in your computers, so people can take advantage of the inherent efficiency increase of not inverting to/transforming from AC power. 10 Comments »

UK/EU - Make 'Designed For Dell' Products available in EU/UK Outside US

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by pwl2706 Aug 11

It's not very easy for UK customers to buy 'Designed For Dell' products like:

* Designed For DELL Mice
* Designed For DELL External Storage
* Designed For DELL Bags
* Designed For DELL Audio (Headphones and Speakers)

These are great products - colour coordinated, and I'd love to be able to buy this when configuring my new XPS laptop on DELL Belgium or Dell UK...

Currently the only option I have is to ask a friend in the US to buy it for me!

This is madness, please organize your supply chain and ordering system so that we can buy these products anywhere in the world as soon as they are available on the US Site.

It's only a matter of logistics surely (I doubt there's any legal issues involved in colorful bags or speakers!) so please sort this out toute de suite as I want to buy my new XPS Laptop in the next couple of months, and I don't want to have to ask a friend in the US to buy them then wait until Thanksgiving to collect them.

Thanks for your time.

Commenting

IdeaStorm, Simplify IT submitted by comprevolution Aug 11

so this maybe more of just an inconvience for me. but when i'm looking threw ideas and i see one that i want to comment on, i find that there are two ways to get to the comments.

1. By clicking the name of the post

ex "no more plastic wrap"

2. By clicking the comments link

ex "27 comments"

But, when i click on option 1. it opens up in a new tab or _blank
when i click on option2, it opens up on the same tab or _self

now if i go with option 1, i can comment then close out the tab and be right were i was when i left off from the old tab, but if i choose option 2 after commenting i have to navigate back to new posts or popular posts and start all over. Can you please set it up so that both the title and the comments go to _blank.

thanks. 5 Comments »
