Allow for a hardware configurable notebook

Laptops submitted by sawjd 12/05/07

Create a note book that allows us to easily switch out hardware and i don't just mean ram or optical drives but something like that allows to switch out video cards and the ability to upgrade processor as long as the motherboard supports it. This would be akin to the HP blackbird but for the notebook 1 Comment »

Build More Durable Products

New Product Ideas, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie 11/28/07

I would like Dell to build more durable products. Something that will last a minimum of 5 years.

And by "minimum" I mean exactly that. The product shouldn't die a death after 5years and 3 seconds. Dell should be building goods that last. 23 Comments »

Sell Linux PCs Worldwide - not only the United States

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide!

Check out the details on Dell Linux systems worldwide!

Offer a dual display option with desktop configurations

Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas submitted by coachcg 11/19/07

It would be great if in the monitor selection of desktop configurations we had the option of purchasing dual displays with the system. It is easy math to figure out that cost per pixel of such a set up is MUCH less. 13 Comments »

Please notify your customers when items are backordered

Sales Strategies submitted by tbbaot 12/03/07

As a long time customer, I am frustrated that Dell can't make basic changes to the online shopping system. Most large online retailers post an accurate inventory status right on their pages.
I recently ordered a TV that said 'ships in 24 hours'. When I received my confirmation email, I could tell from the estimated shipping date that something was wrong. So I called and learned the TV is backordered. The same TV on your website still says 'ships in 24 hours' one week later. If other companies can have realtime stock and inventory reporting, so can Dell.
This TV is not manufactured by Dell so it has nothing to do with your just in time business model. Here's an idea when an item goes into backorder status, post it on your online store. Comment »

Move Faster To Implement Ideas, Remove Them and Give Feedback!

IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie 12/05/07

I count 20 Ideas on the first page of the popular Ideas page. I only know the status of one of them and that's the Dell Linux Repository idea. I know it's status because matt_d very kindly keeps us informed.

The other 19 ideas are a mystery. What's happening to these ideas? Give us feed back, implement or delete. Stop waisting my time. 35 Comments »

Include cleaning and screen protection cloth with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jkeating 11/02/07

A nice dell branded cleaning cloth should be included with new laptops. This cloth would be used to clean the laptop sceens as well as lay on top of the keyboard when the laptop is closed to protect the screen from keyboard imprints. If a cloth is included it is far more likely that this cloth would be used to clean rather than some other cleaning device which may damage a user's screen. 10 Comments »

Donations for Ubuntu development

Linux submitted by dave-2 11/27/07

If Dell ever implements the idea (and this, and this, and this, etc) allowing users to select Ubuntu from a list of OS options instead of going to another section of the website to order a special "N" series model, the Ubuntu option should cost less than the Windows options.

In addition to the OS configuration buttons, offer two buttons that allow the user to contribute that savings back toward Ubuntu development:

o Donate $0 to Ubuntu (default)
o Donate $25 to Ubuntu (split the savings)
o Donate $50 to Ubuntu (donate the full amount saved)

The amount of the full donation should reflect the cost of the least expensive version of Windows (e.g. Genuine Windows(r) Vista Home Premium) . 2 Comments »

XPS Notebook

submitted by fezdell 12/02/07

For the new XPS M1530, a LED screen should be available, preferably standard as with the MacBook Pro. The screen resolution should also be available in resolutions higher than 1280 x 800 to take full advantage of the blu-ray disc drive. 1 Comment »

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

XPS M1530 Resolution ??

XPS products, Laptops submitted by avnanda 11/27/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

SCREEN RESOLUTIONS for XPS Laptop Line

Why on God's green earth would Dell throw in such a cheapy LCD screen into the XPS 1530 ? I've been waiting for this laptop religously since it was 'announced', in the hope of a 1680x1050 screen, or at LEAST 1440x900. What is this, Dell ? Are you trying to scare away your customers with blocky icons and low resolutions ?

Ok, on a less rampaging note ..

Is there any possibility this might change in the future ? Would i be foolish to order immediately, only to see a couple of LCD options pop up over the next few days ?

We now offer 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 panels as an option. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post on the idea.

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Show the Buyer What Different Laptop Battery Sizes *Look* Like On the Laptop

Dell Web Site, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by jasondunn 11/22/07

It's a really great thing that Dell offers buyers multiple choices when it comes to laptop batteries: there's usually a 4-cell, 6-cell, and 9-cell battery option. Dell always lists the watt hours information as well - great!

But what's ridiculous is that there are no images, illustrations, or written information about the exact sizes of the batteries: specifically, which batteries will stick out of the laptop (the "hump"). This is a really important thing to know, because when I'm buying a laptop I usually want to get the biggest battery possible, but one that doesn't stick out. I just ordered a Vostro laptop and was given the choice of three different batteries - yet no indication of which one(s) was actually flush with the laptop.

In general I find that the "More Information" link does a poor job of providing the customer with the information they need about the given accessory or feature option. 11 Comments »

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

make linux systems EASY TO FIND

Dell Web Site submitted by phubert 10/18/07

At other sites, I have seen comments by individuals who have BOUGHT Dell Ubuntu systems complaining about the difficulty FINDING said systems.

I think you'll get more sales if you improve the visibility! 30 Comments »
