Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 10/10/07 **REVIEWED**

An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.

The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Our current priority is to expand Linux availability by bringing more platforms and languages to market. Read what daniel_j has to say.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Laptops submitted by coriedwards 06/06/07

Please create a waterproof notebook in which a user can take to the pool, beach, or will survive if water/coffee is spilt across the keyboard.

Also, please create a notebook line for kids (definitely waterproof) - both high end and low end. 6 Comments »

Work with Carbon Footprint to Improve the Efficiency of all Dell Desktop computers.

Environment submitted by reg 06/06/07

If my corporation is buying 5,000 desktop systems, and Dell desktops use 40% less power than the other guys - we are standardizing on Dell, period..

Take the lead and gain the marketshare, good for Dell and good for your customers too - saving a lot of money buy using lower power desktop computers.

IMPORTANT: Make sure all the 'power save' features are turned ON by default in the operating system and BIOS too! (Many PC vendors have them disabled by default - WRONG! Turn on all those power saving features before the you ship the product!)

VIA takes the lead with Carbon Free Computing.

Give us the ability to eject a disc from a laptop's drive when it is powered off.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by joeevil5000 06/06/07

I have heard a lot of people asking for a warning that you have a disc in your CD/DVD drive when you power it down. The best remedy for this is the ability to eject a disc even if the laptop is powered off. It would take an extremely minimal amount of power from the battery to pop open a disc drive. If the XPS M1210 can detect wi-fi networks with the power off, something like this shold be extremely simple. 7 Comments »

Lo-Jack must be pre-installed or at least pre-warned for installation

Service and Support submitted by kitakits 06/07/07

On behalf of a customer who said that he is fighting cancer and is disabled he had his Inspiron 9400 stolen when he turned his back for 5 minutes. Unfortunately he had no idea that Lo-Jack was to be installed on his system. He suggested that we should have a PRE-WARNING SLIP on the keyboard to have LO-JACK installed if in a neighbourhood full of theifs. He didn't know and he is at a lost concerning so.

Hopefully with this message out we can push on his behalf to have LO-Jack Installed to Cx's who thinks they need it to have some investment protection for the computer they bought from the company. 9 Comments »

Dell the Innovator: Mobile Phone

Dell, Linux, New Product Ideas submitted by ty1323 06/07/07

Dell, up to this point, I believe, has been known to make sturdy and reliable hardware. But, not known as in innovator (save for introducing desktop Linux to the world, which is a great step... a huge step, but...).

Dell has the resources and the weight to push a huge project like this that could really start something great. Dell, along with any number of contracts, should develop a mobile phone... based on Ubuntu Mobile that is being refined at this very moment:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/07/smartphones-to-get-mobile-flavor-of-ubuntu...

This shouldn't evolve into a line of cheap phones, but one amazing smartphone (similiar to the iPhone, if you want to think in that manner).

More press attention for Dell and Ubuntu, a (very possibly) great and innovative mobile phone from one of the premier hardware manufacturers of the world, and just the perfect way for Dell to continue their trek into new territory in the hardware world. 4 Comments »

Establish Show Room

Advertising and Marketing submitted by choo_hoo_neoh 06/07/07

Dell should establish a show room on major city, because some of the customer prefer to buy something they can touch (to be more confident on product) and also they can cash and carry, instead of wait for few days of delivery. 5 Comments »

Ubuntu-Vista Dual-boot

Linux, Operating Systems, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by badblood 06/08/07 **NOT NOW**

As Dell Ubuntu and Vista computer systems are priced roughly the same, then Dell could give us both OS' for the same price.

Sounds reasonable, no? 17 Comments »

Lease Option for Home Computers

Environment submitted by markflacy 06/08/07

Provide a lease arrangement for non-commercial customers who would turn in their system at the end of a 2 or 3-year term for a new upgrade. This would ensure that all equipment goes back to Dell for recycling, disassembly, reuse, etc. Dell would retain ownership of the equipment, like a leased vehicle, so that the customer would never have to deal with disposal, replacement of faulty equipment, etc. Customer would get a discount coupon on the upgrade upon turning in the old equipment.

Equipment could be returned to retail outlets (Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry's, CompUSA) with whom Dell has a relationship, and customers could pickup their pre-ordered new equipment at the same time, either a new lease or purchase. This would also eliminate much of the shipping packaging.

Or if the customer prefers, could have the new equipment shipped to their home and return the old equipment in the packaging from the new system. The customer would then receive their discount/rebate upon Dell receiving the old equipment. Comment »
