Vostro 1310's screen is too small

Vostro products submitted by michaly Jun 1

I think that the 1310's screen is little too small. It's a great laptop but I think that you could stretch the screen more towards the endge of the upper cover 5 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

All versions of Vista for Inspiron laptop series (All laptops)

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by saleemohaib 08/25/07

I was recently checking out the new and beautiful Dell Inspiron 1720/1721 and saw that no Vista Ultimate is offered. I think it would be a good idea to offer all versions of Vista for customers to chose from. Including the 64bit Vista Ultimate for customers who want to but a laptop with 4GB of RAM.

Offer Windows with Academic license

Education, Software submitted by mieg 07/29/07

Academic licenses for Windows are far cheaper than regular licenses. Offer Windows with an academic license and leave the hassle of proving that the consumer is eligible to Microsoft. This will not cost much for Dell I think, but would save students a lot of money. 1 Comment »

"Similar ideas" annoyance

IdeaStorm submitted by programatix Mar 29

Hi,

Everytime we post an Idea, the "Similar ideas" page is displayed. This page is good. But instead, the Ideas that are shown here are not anywhere near the new Idea that we are trying to post.

Dell should improve the "Similar ideas" detection code or instead of helping, it annoys people. When it annoys people, people do not even check if the Ideas are similar, they just click the "No thanks" button on the spot.

Take for example, for this current post that I am posting, the "Similar ideas" are,
1) Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot
2) Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
3) Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser 2 Comments »

IR on XPS M1530

XPS products, Laptops submitted by programatix Mar 29

Hi,

Since I own only XPS M1530, I do not know whether this apply to XPS M1330.

The XPS M1530 has a consumer IR port in front of it, next to the audio connectors. Why not put in a full working IR controller? I mean the one that can let us receive and send, instead of just receive signal from Dell Remote Control.

Is Dell worried about the power consumption? If so, make a hot key for QuickSet to turn on/off the IR. Or is it too expensive to put it in?

Many people would think, why IR when we have bluetooth?

First, bluetooth on XPS M1530 is optional.

Second, not all gadgets have bluetooth (instead, they have IR).

Third, sometimes to send small files, IR is more convenience. Just put the device in front of the IR port and sent, skipping the process of turning on Bluetooth on the device, then on the laptop, right click on the Bluetooth icon (near the system tray) and click "Receive file". I know, I'm lazy. Oh, before anybody mention that IR is slow, yes it is. That is why I stated that, "to send small files". Comment »

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Get some Precision, Latitude models displayed in retail.

Latitude products, Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by jmxz Mar 28

Dell's brand image in most consumer's minds is typically that Dell is a low-end discount computer vendor with rather clunky designs - or, a smaller number of people think of Dell as also having a gamer angle with flashy-xtreme-geek Alienware and XPS lines. People get those impressions because those are the Dell models they typically see.

What fewer people seem to notice is that Dell makes some extremely nice serious computers in their Precision and Latitude lines - that have the sleekness, style, and quality to directly compete with the IBM(now Lenovo)'s and Apple's of the world in the high end.

Seems Dell could elevate their brand image considerably if some of the higher end Precisions and Latitudes were displayed in more places where people are introduced to Dells. Maybe not in WalMart; but certainly places like Staples and Best Buy I'd imagine the higher end Dells would make quite an impression. Once people could actually see and touch such models more easily, I imagine a number of business people especially would get those higher end models instead of vostros or inspirons. (I would have preferred a latitude to my inspiron, but you didn't have any with an OS I could use at the time of my last purchase.) 4 Comments »

Dell handhelds can be empowered by softwares in the HEALTH field

Healthcare, New Product Ideas, Software submitted by ahmadvand Mar 28

Dell handhelds can be empowered by softwares in the HEALTH field. I think (according to my 4 year experience in our Ministry of Health and Medical Education) and it is obvious (according to researches I have done for health software market and 2 years of experience with networking for health using Microsoft technologies) that there is a very huge gap in this part of the market. May I ask you to help me find any possible way to interact with developers and find better communications channel to send ideas (and maybe collaborate in their development).

Yours truly,

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.
