HDMI / DVI Ports for all affordable Notebooks like Vostro / Inspiron

submitted by horizonb Jan 2

Dell needs to put HDMI / DVI ports on the affordable Notebook models like HP. I had to cancel my Vostro Notebook order for that. Most small businesses have now invested in monitors with DVI / HDMI. We would like to use these high resolution monitors with Notebooks when our employees are at their office.

Dell will retain customers like us even if it makes HDMI an option with upgraded graphics card for affordable notebooks like the Vostro and the Inspiron. 2 Comments »

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

Give another announcement of how many of your machines shipped with Vista like you did a year ago.

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Jan 11

Almost exactly a year ago (Jan 29, 2007) Dell announced what percentage and now many Dell machines shipped with Vista. Interestingly, the percentage of Vista systems Dell announced for Jan 2007 was much much higher (about 61% higher) than current speculation based on Gartner and Information Week that suggest that industry-wide "Vista takeup on new PCs shipped in 2007 amounted to only 39 per cent". Other developments since Dell last announced Vista percentages included Dell adding XP to more models and supporting more different versions of Linux than they had in the past.

In light of these developments, Dell, could you announce the operating system market shares again this January, like you did last January? It seems like forward progress of being less dependent on Vista (thanks to XP and Ubuntu) would be good news for Dell.

[PS: I seem to recall someone from Dell on IdeaStorm saying Dell doesn't release such figures; but clearly the first link here shows that they did last year. If it's a new policy not to disclose the figures, could you instead describe that policy and why it was instituted?] 4 Comments »

Sales People that speak my language

Sales Strategies submitted by felixschuster Jan 14

It would be great to have salespeople that actually speak my language fluently. I hate to wait 12 minutes to talk to someone who doesn't understand me, when I want to order an XPS notebook 1 Comment »

Save Windows XP! The clock is ticking

Microsoft will end OEM and shrink-wrapped sales of Windows XP on June 30, 2008, forcing users to shift to Vista. (System builders, meaning those who do white-box PCs, can sell XP through December 31.) Don't let that happen!

Giveaway

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by junior Jan 12

when somebody orders or builds, dell should include a sticker or two with the Dell logo on each. Just like what Apple is doing.
Maybe even Inspiron and/or XPS accessory kit for each product 5 Comments »

HDMI, HDMI, by God almighty, HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by benjesuit 09/25/07

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.

And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.

Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.

And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult. 30 Comments »

Update drivers more often.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by laxmanb 12/31/07

Dell hasn't updated drivers for the ATi Mobility Radeon in my notebook for 7 months. Since ATi, Nvidia, and most other manufacturers release new drivers on a regular basis to OEMs (once every month), And the early Vista drivers are buggy (my display driver stops working at times after hibernating), Couldn't you just post them onto your Drivers and Downloads page on a regular basis? 5 Comments »

Add a switch to disable all LEDs for entertainment mode (laptops)

Laptops submitted by fry-kun Jan 17

I like to watch DVDs on my laptop in the dark. Unfortunately, there are always green LEDs that light up right in my face every time I do. Some of them I can disable (numlock, capslock, wifi, bluetooth) - but others stick around (power/HD/battery indicators).
I'd like to have a switch to disable all LEDs at once, for use while in "entertainment mode". 18 Comments »

Dell... Offer Faster RAM!

Sales Strategies submitted by incubus240 Jan 20

Dell needs to offer faster RAM (i.e. If the FSB on the laptop is 800Mhz then match with 800Mhz RAM rather than 667Mhz RAM). I always have to buy the minimum amount of RAM for the system and end up throwing it away. They charge me $350 for 2GB of 667Mhz then I turn around and purchase 4GB of 800Mhz for $130. Since they make you buy at least 2GB... it is such a waiste! 7 Comments »

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Blacklight to illuminate keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jervis961 08/08/07

OK there are ideas for backlit keyboards, led lights for keyboards but I don't see one mentioning using a blacklight. We've all been to a store displaying items using a blacklight or gone to a bowling alley where they use them and know that white colors really pop under a blacklight. Since most keyboards are already black with white letters it would be just a minor addition and wouldn't add heat to the keyboard area like a back light would, 21 Comments »

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

No monitor

Monitors and Displays submitted by kushboy 02/19/07

One of the only reasons I won't even consider purchasing a computer from Dell is that I was told I could not purchase a system without also purchasing a monitor as well. I don't need a monitor, so don't make me buy one, and I won't. 17 Comments »
