Clean up the drivers mess

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by kngbeavis 06/24/07

Dell needs to have a better system in place when it comes to downloading drivers and software... whatever happened to the cd's that would come with all the drivers on them? I had to wade through a long list of drivers installing most of them until the laptop actually worked. Theres no description given in hardware manager about what the device is, and when I used the service code, all I got was a list of EVERY POSSIBLE PIECE OF SOFTWARE that COULD be on there. Is there any way to tie service code to whats actually on the pc? 3 Comments »

Extend Ordering System to allow Automatic Subscription to Tracking Data

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by clocks 06/24/07

Extend the ordering system to include the ability to indicate that the purchaser would like to subscribe to shipping updates.

For example, you offer the checkbox during checkout "Check Here to automatically recieve shipping updates from the carrier".

Checking the box would then have the user's registered email signed up to recieve tracking updates from DHL, FedEx, whatever automatically to the tracking numbers which the shipment components were shipped as.

From a technical standpoint, this is relatively easy to implement, the only plae where it could really get "stuck" in implementation is whether or not your shipping provider API supports the ability to add a subscriber to a tracking number. If not, given the volume at which Dell ships components, I have trouble seeing a scenario where the provider would not make an effort to extend the API for you.

THis offers your customers the ability to recieve near real time updates from the shipping provider directly with the status of thier packages. Customers who dont wish to recieve that kind of granular information dont have to and have the choice not to check the box (which would be unchecked by default). 1 Comment »

Additional cosmetic customization options for Inspiron and XPS notebooks.

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by benjesuit 06/24/07

Color panels on the lid is a good start. But one would only get to enjoy that when the lid is down - which isn't often.

Therefore, I propose a range of additional cosmetics choices:

1. Choice of LCD screen bezel surround: (same range of colors for the lid)
2. Choice of Keyboard color (Black, Silver, Gray, White)
3. Choice of Touchpad/button color (same range as keyboard colors)
4. Choice of Keyboard surround color (Same range as lid colors)
5. Choice of LED panel light colors using colored inserts (Blue, cyan, red, green, yellow.) 9 Comments »

Dell Sponsored Gaming Tournament

Gaming submitted by sid 02/23/07

Dell has two great gaming PCs the XPS700 & XPS700H2C. I think Dell needs to get the word out how great these systems are! Dell should sponsor a gaming tournament in several major cities around the country like Chicago, New York, LA, ect. Everyone plays on one of these systems! The grand prize could be a custom XPS700H2c with Mr. Dell’s signature and a custom paint job that fits with the city. Or a big pile of cash… that would be great to. 1 Comment »

Website Improvements

Dell Web Site submitted by logi 02/23/07

Another thing Dell needs to work on is to improve their navigation on their website. Clean it up and simplify it. Right now we have to click so many times before we can even get to the area of ordering. Since Dell doesn't display it's products on shelves I would like to see more pictures (zoom ins and zoom outs).

For heavens sakes, look at Apples website or HP's and start turning your company around!!!! Simple, clean and easy to use. Comment »

Sell more desktops without monitors, keyboards, etc

Desktops, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by gordonbrown77 02/16/07 **COMING SOON**

Make it an option to not get things people may already have when upgrading a PC such as monitors, mouse, keyboard. This would be good environmentally and save people some money if they already have theae things and will not be keeping the old PC. 34 Comments »

Become the open source OEM

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Could Dell Own Green?

Environment submitted by adrian 02/01/07 **REVIEWED**

Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.

Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'?
Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

Let us choose a delivery date

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by bitoclass 02/17/07

There's apparently no way to specify or choose a delivery date for computers or monitors from your site.

Given that most people are out of their house most days at work, and may need to arrange time off to take in a delivery, it would be much better if you could choose a convenient date for delivery when placing an order on the web site.

It would also give you some competitive advantage because I know from asking that (for instance) HP can't even do this by phone, let alone on their site.

Obviously the date would need to be after the product was ready but you could give a range of, say, a week after the product was due to be ready to ship, during the checkout process, for the buyer to select the delivery date from. 7 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Product enhancement for Dell power adapter

Laptop Power submitted by gbrugman 02/21/07

For your information: daily winding and unwinding the notebook connecting cord, will eventually cause the cable shield and isolation to tear down, just outside the housing. It happened to many Dell notebook cords at work, causing the power flow to stop or, even worse, to short-circuit.

The cord at the other end of the AC wall mount doesn't have this problem because this cord already points at the right angle. So as to avoid said problem in the future, both cords should leave the housing in the proper winding-angle: problem solved.

I hope to have been of help, because I think it's a shame that a minor cord problem makes it this risky to work with an otherwise good product. It seems easy enough to remedy. :-) 39 Comments »

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Give Dell employees better discounts so they can experience the customer experience

Dell submitted by pwalker 02/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell employees tell me they don't get discounts on Dell products. It's time to give Dell employees good discounts so they will more frequently experience your customer experience. This is important. I believe motivating them to be Dell customers more frequently will generate a lot of ideas for improving dell.com, products and services.

We did update our Employee Purchase Program in November.

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.
