dell is going back in time in the netherlands how about your country? IdeaStorm, Service and Support submitted by bartholo 03/09/07
Dell suddenly went back in time... Linux submitted by yesmathew 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell announced to pre-load Ubuntu on Notebooks and Desktops for US market. What about for Europe? We want for Europe market too... users from Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Austria, Spain, and others are requesting the same. Proof that Linux and OSS are ONLY for hobbyists! Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 03/06/07
Since so many have tried to say Linux/OSS are only for hobbyists and 'not for business', I thought it would help if we could supply anecdotal evidence of business, Education and government USE of Linux and OSS. Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged. Provide a free working OS for "Vista Victims" Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 10/12/07 From the comments in another Idea and a a recent news article it seems groups are requesting a free working OS for "Vista Victims" as the article calls them. Consumer group demands free copies of XP for Vista victimsI'd add that if Dell adopt this program, rather than forcing XP, they offer the choice of XP or a supported Ubuntu it'd probably be both cheaper for Dell as well as better for Dell customers. So Dell - please offer the Vista Victims a choice of a free XP or supported Ubuntu to make up for their pains as recommended by the quoted article. 28 Comments » Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!! Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED** I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments » Sell Linux PCs Worldwide - not only the United States Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide! JAVA! Pre-install Sun Java SDK on client machine | JEE Server - Ready to ship Linux, Servers and Storage submitted by clj2289 02/20/07
Promote the OSS Sun Java Platform, bundle it in with the installations. Give developers a consistent platform that we can deploy to besides the Windows API for desktop. Have Opera pre-installed browser Software submitted by envek 02/19/07
Opera is fast, standart compliant, free of charge (on desktops), lite, powerful and crossplatform web-browser. Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle. Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now! coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07
coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers. Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07
Ubuntu & Win XP Dual boot; Open office and Firefox /Thunderbird Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bsteff 02/20/07
Sell desktops (and yes laptops) with dual boot of Ubuntu AND Win XP. My particular work environment cannot tolerate Vista and I don't like the control Microsoft is attempting to exert over my PC. Consumers are NOT mindless idiots!!! GEt rid of DRM. I will gladly pay for digital content and I will not sell/give it to a friend or acquaintance (read pirate/thief). GWA is bad enough with threats from Microsoft to crank up the pressure on non-genuine PC's. I am a physician and I control, to a large extent, at my hospital system what type of software we get in the form of PACS (computerized x-ray digital image viewing on local PC's - thin client) Almost all of imaging is now digital. pre-installed linux ubuntu on desktops and laptops Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by fra9000 02/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
i think linux will be the future...so please make some model-line of desktops and laptops with ubuntu linux pre-installed... thanks Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast Firefox, Mozilla thunderbird as well as mozilla sunbird Linux, Software submitted by rakeshinnovation 02/27/07
I have been an internet user for the past 5 years, I have used all almost all the browsers, and without doubt i can say that in terms of performance, security, and user interface the open source browsers are the best, the kind of addons and features i get with Firefox i will never be getting with internet explorer, so i was thinking why do not dell ship computers with Firefox Mozilla thunderbird and the calendar software subird???? it could add to the efforts of the open source community, me as a supporter for the open source community would love to see Dell systems with open source applications, I would request that all people who support open source please cast your valuable vote for this idea, I was also thinking that if the Mozilla community cooperates with Dell , Dell could have a customized browser which will be really good for the customers of the Dell and it could add value to the Dell line of products, lets see the what Dell's thinks about this idea//? Firefox support on Japanese website Dell Web Site submitted by tenrou 02/20/07
Unbelievable as it may be in these days of near 20% market penetration for Firefox DELL's Japanese website denies access to the system-configuration pages to any and all browsers except Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and above or Netscape 4.6 or above. Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. track my votes
