Things that make you go hmmm...
Gaming, Service and Support submitted by nystylin74

All I have to say is that my buddy bought a gaming computer from Dell and can't run any of the Battlefield series and a bunch of other games. He's called tech support 2 times and they came up with the same results. So they said that they would send him a new video card. Well they never did. SO I called back pretending to be him and I went through the same 3 hr processes to come to the conclusion the other 2 techs came to. So he says that they will send a new video card and to send the old one back in the same packaging. He never got that one either. So according to Dell he has 3 new video cards. Now I ask everyone this... First of all in this day and age of computer technology. Why did we have to go through the same exact 3 hr processes of troubleshooting the same crap. Don't other tech support guys put notes by your account about your calls and what has been done? And why do we praise dell if the promise and never deliver? In this case the video cards... And another thing... Don't people pay for 1 yr in home support when you buy a brand new PC from this company? Why has there not been any attempt to fix his pc and make him a happy customer? I'll tell you what! DELL LISTEN TO ME HE WILL NOT BE PAYING HIS BILL TILL YOU FIX HIS PC. If he didn't pay his bill every month you guys would be calling him to the legal limits of the FDCPA to get your money. Now why is it that your not doing your part? Now lets get to the root of this post. I've read that Dell has been censoring their blog post here so that customers don't read the other customers bad posts about this company. Well. if your going to use the excuse that they were cursing and saying offencive things that could not be posted on a companies public post. So here it is no cursing slander or racist remarks. But I bet that you not going to let this post hit your forum. But guess what...?!?!?!? I will copy and save this post and if I see that your censoring it I will post it 100 times a day if I have to till it gets seen. If you ban me I will get a new e-mail address that I'll never use again and re-post 100 times a day till your It's get sick of seeing this post and deleting it. I'll make them spend all of their paid by you time to deal with me. Go ahead ban me and I'll keep coming back. Like a bad hemroid. So what's it going to be?????

Simplify Backups

Make Backups easier: With DVDs readily available and fairly large online stores with gmail, msn, ... , maybe even some connection machanism to another computer :Provide a backup button that guides through what you want backed up, what media can be found and gives an estimate of how long it will take. Thens goes and does it simply and easily and tells you when its done and how to get it back. Jobs is taking the moral lead in removing DRM, Dell can take the lead in reliably storing your data.

Add This Product: Data Center Inventory Tool & KVM Remote Administrator
Data Center Inventory Tool - - - Help harried LAN Managers in administrative details for their data center. Offer various sizes and site licenses: (a) 10 to 50 servers (and other devices) (b) 51 to 250 servers (and other devices) (c) 251 to 3000 servers (and other devices) (d) 3001 to 20000 servers (and other devices)
KVM Remote Administrator - - - The components are there, just that no one has tied them all into a single tool, affordable tool; you got to get us past this silliness of a KVM switch; even a software based switch is painful to set up and impossible to keep stable if you start swapping out blades;
if you are interested, we can discuss this offline in greater detail

Dell Rac Configurator
Servers and Storage submitted by righteousjester

We must have a hundred DELL Racs in our server rooms, populated with 6850, 2950, Blades, Management consoles and so forth.
The problem we have is that servers get moved in and out all the time, and the layout of the initially installed rac changes to a point u don't know where what is.
So, I propose that Dell come up with something that will show you the layout of the RAC. We currently use the KVM to manage the systems, but it would be GREAT if that KVM could tell us you have a 4U 6850 then a 2U 2950 then a 7U BLADE and so forth.
I would imagine that the rac would have something running down the side, and when you install the server you attach just one more cable which will then tell the KVM what is the size of the server (2U, 4U) and what the service tag number of that server is - then going even further run open manage via the KVM to monitor all the servers from another device level. Instead of installing Open Manage on all the machine, it is all controlled by the KVM. And eventually, exporting the layout of the RAC into a pretty little PDF, html, xml ..... thingy........... is that asking too much?
oh yeah, I see you finally made the LCD on the front of the servers viewable while the cover is still on - congrats on that - now if you could put another LCD at the back of the server, mirroring the first, that would also just be swell.

Space for Asset Tags

I can appreciate the need to make every inch of the front of a 1U and 2U server count. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider leaving some sort of flat, non-open-hole surface that's NOT on something that's easily-removed (e.g. CD-ROM bezel) that will "fit" a standard sized asset sticker. Right now since the 6th generation models, the only viable place is on the top lid. Every year, it's a complete pain to have the auditor standing there with the barcode scanner while I pull the server out a few inches so they can scan the tag, push it back, lather, rinse repeat - 200+ times! This little change would save many administrators hours of wasted audit time every year.

Positive Locking Power Cords
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage submitted by mdomansky

For Power Edge Servers and for Dell PDUs, put a locking tab similar to an RJ45 cable on the power cords.
Cords can appear to be long enough when threaded through the cable management, but it is far to easy for something to snag and a power cord be pulled out causing, at a minimum the orange light, and often, a full outage.
Put a small tab on the top of the cable and a small indent in the receptacle (ON BOTH ENDS if it plugs into a Dell PDU). This way it can't come out accidentally. I think this design would be backwards compatible in both directions. Old, non-positive locking cords won't be affected by the small indent in the receptacle and positive locking cords just won't positive lock in receptacles that don't have the indent. There may already even be an indent in the receptacle that could support this.

Nagios Plugins for Poweredge
Linux, Servers and Storage submitted by novovia

It would be great to have a full support of ipmi with nagios plugins, including hardware support. Linux driver for open distribution like redhat or suse is not yet enough supported. It is necessary for Dell to offer a full and quality support to major distribution (not only red hat) and major open source for monitoring and management.

Stick to a form factor
Servers and Storage submitted by pest_789

STOP changing server form factors every generation! On the 1750, the power connectors are on the right as seen from the back. The 1850s have them on the left. Now the 1950s have them back on the right. End result? Our racks are starting to look like crap!
The 1750s had bad rails. The 1850s had great rails. Now we are back to bad rails on the 1950s again.
In every one of these three generations, the rails have also gotten longer and longer. Now with the 1950s, in order to have enough room to utilize four vertical power strips at the back of each rack, we have to CUT off the stupid cable management ears.
Does anyone actually USE the cable management arm system? All the hot swappable FRUs are accessible without moving the server within the rack. There's no need to pull the server out of the rack while it's powered up. We certainly can't accept the reduced airflow caused by that arm being in place and all those cords in the way.
We buy about 300 new Dell servers per quarter. Stop changing things around and make us more able to keep a neat, easy to manage data center.
