Laptop & Desktop Boot in seconds from Flash Drives
Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg
02/19/07
Have laptops and PCs that boot quickly & quietly from fast internal flash drives, and run the whole OS and application programs in RAM. The New Dell PC will boot from internal Fast USB 2.0 flash drives in just a few seconds. The Hard drive can stay powered down, completely off, unless the user needs to store some extra large files (video, photos).
Laptop Battery life is measured in days, not hours.
Have 2 Recessed USB 2.0 Slots. Two USB Flash Drives would fit neatly into the laptop. In this way the whole OS and Apps run in RAM, and stores data files on an 8 GB flash drive.
The 8GB is used transparently as the 'On Line' Storage, with a hard drive acting as secondary storage. This gives desktops and laptops much greater speed and power savings.
<font> On-Line/Near-Line Storage Model for Laptops</font> 1. OS and App all run from RAM (so the machine should have 2GB+ of RAM) 2. Modified files are worked on in RAM, and stored on the Flash Drive 3. Older (non-system) files, that are 'inactive', get pushed down to the hard drive,
Hard Drive files are stored with on-the-fly hardware compression / decompression (back to RAM), with the flash drive file replaced with a pointer to the hard drive file. Data is always safely copied down to the hard drive on shut down.
The flash drive is removeable and upgradeable, so later if someone wants to upgrade to a 32GB flash drive, just unplug and plug in the new one.
On-line / Near-Line storage works great on very large data servers, where data is mostly write once, read infrequently. (Also known as Write Once, Read Mostly - WORM drives.)
It's time such ideas are put into practice for desktops and laptops.
You can run your Dell Laptop TODAY from 100% Flash Drive - Pen Drive using Puppy Linux.
www.puppylinux.org delivers a complete, small, fast Linux Distribution including all major tools in under 90MB. You can add Open Office, GIMP, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc and they all fit right in a USB Flash Drive. Pupply Linux Applications. Download Puppy Linux so you Can Try Flash Drive Dell Notebooks Today.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
Linux submitted by gergnz
02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!! Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Laptops With Built In Fire Suppression System (FSS)
Laptop Power submitted by reg
03/03/07
Just In Case - The notebook batteries burst into flames, again: Build a Fire Suppression System (FSS) into the case - around the battery!
Simple - a Burning Flame activated safety device - Dell would be the first!
1. The battery shorts out and starts to burn & melt. 2. The heat of the battery bursts the FSS that surrounds the battery. 3. A compressed, pressurized, flame retardant gel smothers the flames.
So Dell laptops would be the first laptop built with a safety system protecting users from flaming batteries.
The FFS would add 6 mm to the thickness of the laptop, but in the end, safety is job #1. The FSS would contain a large enough quantity of pressurized, foaming flame smothering gel that even if the whole battery goes up in flames, the FSS splits open and soaks the entire laptop with safety foam.
Inventing better batteries that CAN NOT burst into flame - no matter how badly they get treated - that would be a very, very good idea too!

Sell an OS Migration Tool Old PC --> New PC
Operating Systems submitted by reg
03/05/07
WE ALL ALREADY OWN A COPY OF WINDOWS XP.
So, Sell a OS Migration Tool with each new computer:
1, Unbox New DELL. 2. Connect USB crossover cable between Old PC and the New DELL. 3. Boot New Dell with the OS Migration Tool CD. 4. Windows XP, Programs and Data copy off of old PC to New DELL. 5. Reboot New Dell, insert Dell Windows XP Driver update CD, run Install. DONE!
There, in 5 steps the customers are still using their favorite programs, in the new CPU configuration, with the new hardware speed boost!
You wouldn't buy a new copy of MS Office with each PC upgrade, why in the world should you expect us to buy a new copy of Windows ? The copy of Windows XP I ALREADY HAVE works just fine Thank you!
No Vista? No problem! :^)

Unionize Dell Manufacturing Centers
Dell submitted by reg
03/05/07
Well,
Dell can improve the quality of its products by Unionizing all its production, manufacturing, and warehouse facilities.
1. Pay a minimum wage of $10 hour. 2. Full Blue Cross / Blue Shield Health care package for workers, spouse & children. 3. Full Dental and Vision coverage for workers, spouse and children. 4. Two Weeks paid vacation, minimum, with All federal holidays, + birthday holiday. 5. Time and a half for overtime, Triple time pay for holiday workers (Christmas, etc.) + two days paid off (to make up for the holiday they missed). 6. Collective rights of the workers protected, putting all your people first. 7. ESOP plan, giving every worker 1 share of Dell for each $500 in their pay.
Only when Dell's manufacturing, assembly, and warehouse workers unionize, with Dell workers actually get paid a decent living wage.
Unionize NOW!!

Dell Linux Launch Page
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by reg
03/12/07
Have a Dell Page that lists Links to Linux Distro download sites.
The Dell Linux Launch Page would also promote on-sale Dell products for Linux (notebooks, PCs, printers, network cards, video cards, etc) - all 'Linux Supported Devices'. It's a market category as well as a Dell Linux branding strategy.
Laptops / PC come installed with a Fast, Small Linux install, under 100 MB.
Just big enough to quickly boot, find the internet, and display the dell Linux Launch Page. [I recommend a Dell modified version of www.puppylinux.org, www.knoppix.org, or www.vectorlinux.org ]
Then the User can keep to mini install and use it for internet browsing and web email and basic documents and graphics - or use the Dell Linux Launch Page to find and download a 'Full Sized' Distro.
IDEAS IN ACTION STEPS: 1. Dell Builds and Posts its own Dell Linux Launch Page EASY! 2. Dell selects one of the above mentioned small fast linux systems, and works with that community to customize a Dell Hardware version - auto detects all Dell Hardware. 3. Install that little Dell Distro on Hard Drives, and include a Live Boot CD copy with each computer. ( for system restores if their downloaded Linux doesn't work out...) 4. Now people can select Dell Linux as one of the choices for OS - and not pay for Vista! 5. New PC/notebook owners boot up their machine with Dell's little linux, opens with a Welcome Page with 3 links - Help files (on PC), Manuals (on PC) and Dell's Linux Launch Page (internet). There is plenty of money to be made this way, all they need to do is get on the ball... It also has the added benefit of Saving Dell System Build Times, and reducing costs!
Any less than 100 MB partition image will copy onto a Hard Drive and CD very quickly.

BOYCOTT VISTA!
Operating Systems submitted by reg
03/21/07
Dell Dudes,
Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.
The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.
US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.
The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.
Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,
The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.
Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.
Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?
BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!
If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.
Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?
Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista.

The Air Car runs on Compressed Air. It is the only car with NEGATIVE EMISSIONS RATINGS! Air is Cleaner coming out of it than going into it!
The Air compressor filters air as it goes into the car, and the car filters the air as it goes out. The Air car acts as a transportable atmospheric scrubber system.

Click the Air Car to see other models. Dimensions: 3.84m, 1.72m, 1.75m Weight: 750 kg Maximum speed: 110 kmh Mileage: 200 - 300 km Max load: 500 Kg Recharge time: 4 hours (Mains connector) Recharge time: 3 minutes (Air station) No Combustion, no pollution, no heavy electric battery, no heavy metals, no toxic leaks. It use just compressed AIR. Travel for only a few cents, instead of more than $2.00 a gallon of gas. Burning gasoline is expressed as exploding expanding gases. Why use liquids at all, when AIR is so much cleaner, easy to store, and actually helps the environment? HOW IT WORKS: The Air Car.

Biodegradable Computers
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg
03/30/07
Well, It would be great if a computer was made of mostly biodegradable components.
Imagine when your done with your old computer, you could remove the power supply and hard drive and CD drive, and then drop the rest of it into a tub of boiling hot water.
The Circuit Boards would melt away, a harmless starch based polymer that bacteria can eat.
The chips, resistors, and sockets would sink to the bottom of the tub.
The actual wiring would no longer use Copper or Gold, but the conductive plastic polymer recently developed - works as good as metal, but it's plastic!
So you get left with some starchy water, wet chips and electronics, and some stringy plastic strings.
The Advantages:
Forget the land fill - the plastics can get recycled. The starchy polymer water well - it should be treatable like 'grey water'. The electronics - mostly silicon, plastics, and metals - they readily can be melted down for the gold, silver, etc content - or processed in the most logical manner.
The metal / plastic casing should be made of FEWER large parts, easily separated into recycled plastic, and recycled steel / aluminum.
Don't stop at the PC - make smaller PCs, biodegradable mice, keyboards, printer, etc. A whole line of computer equipment that when soaked in water over 200 degrees, they melt away. (Hot water so your PC doesn't melt itself on a humid day!)

Pass New Law: Abandonware becomes Public Source after 5 Years.
Dell, Software submitted by reg
03/31/07
Windows 3.1 - Long gone in the history of Computing Windows NT - No longer supported. Mac OS 1 through 8 - not supported in any way, shape or form.
PASS THE LAW
Abandoned Software becomes Open Source after 5 years of discontinuance.
This opens software up for the world to still use. Not the latest and greatest, mind you - just yesterday's lukewarm leftovers.
Companies such as Microsoft can write their latest code, but can not slaughter millions of machines in a single blow.
When any company stops supporting their packages, as previously supported, the home government gets the final draft source code, made publicly available, 5 years later.
1. Old software programs can be maintained and salvaged. 2. Five Year buffer is an eternity in 'Computer Time' - protecting new software developers profits. 3. YOU can't get help anymore for Windows NT, but you can get the whole package and source code free. Use it as you wish. 4. PREVENT CORPORATE ABUSE. Such as the Total Windows XP shutdown, and forced death march into the Windows Vista camp. 5. Preserve Cultural Heritage. Data formats and information face total loss, in 20 years, could you open a Word 97 document? Most likely not. For the first time in human culture - the collective works of millions of people faces complete erasure. This is Wrong, and must be stopped.
<font> <u>The Digital Culture Preservation Act</u>
All Abandoned software and software platforms older than 5 years from the date of 'discontinuance' becomes public domain. If original software developers still exist, they must provide Source Code to the Library of Congress. The Source Code is treated as a book, and put on-line as a digital publication. (ASCII Text File) Along with downloadable working copies of the compiled program. If the original software developers do not exist, citizens may submit software to the Library of Congress using an on-line form and upload service. Old emulator programs are to be added to the Library too. Then software can be preserved for computer platforms no longer in production. (Apple, Atari, Commodore, IBM, Sinclair, and dozens more . . . )</font>

Dell should secure Military contracts to sell more hardware
Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg
04/02/07
<font> The new Reaper combat drone is ready for combat.
Dell should look into developing small combat computing systems. Not as big as a Reaper, more on the size of the personal kill-bots, spider-mines, and other mobile anti-personnel and anti-vehicle weapons made popular in SciFi and Video Games.
The New Dell Combat Systems can be easy for troops to deploy to fortify defensive positions.
The DCS can implement the newly developed Combo Battery/Explosive - Under normal power draw conditions, the battery pack acts as a regular battery. But also has a dual function, when engaging a target, the battery activates a total discharge, in combination with explosive gel, the battery+gel acts as the ordinance in the device. This design saves space in the Kill-Bot / Spider Mine, for easier transport and deployment.
Military contracts tend to be worth Millions or Billions of Dollars, with guaranteed revenue from government contracts, as long as the contractor delivers.
Dell delivers excellent notebooks and desktop systems, it's time to expand into other, much more lucrative product lines.
