Lean Up-to-date (only) Ultraportable concentrating on size & weight

Latitude products submitted by bretta Yesterday

The E-Series looks great - but please give us a couple of thinner and lighter models in the 13" - 15" screen size *without* internal optical drive, VGA, DVI, PCMCIA/ExpressCard and Firewire; the idea being minimal size and weight (along with sufficient power, of course).

Keep DisplayPort, at least 2 USBs, eSATA ('til USB 3.0 is ready) and give us solid processing including at least P8400 & P8600. If there's room left over somewhere, include a small SSD (1.8"?) as an optional second drive (that's one of the few 'extras' I'm fine with). I assume it'll have built-in wireless and I couldn't care less about GPS (I hope I'm not paying much in dollars or bulk for it).

I think of this as an updated version of my favorite laptop; a ~2002 Latitude X200. And no docking station, please; just an external optical drive. Thanks. (My $.02) 4 Comments »

Vostro systems made available for puchase thru Dell Home and home office..

Sales Strategies submitted by ward733 Yesterday

Though the vostro systems are designed for the small to medium buisness user, they also have a good home market as well.. If you have even a likeing for an all black system its no where to be found at the Home site.. I guess if even they were available in even the outlet would be a help.. Comment »

Advertising and Marketing submitted by drewness Yesterday

When the "still looking for Windows XP?" link on Dell.com is clicked, one is subjected to an obvious pitch for Vista. Get rid of any reference to Vista from this page! It's a no-brainer! Comment »

Option to include certain cables with your laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by james-94 Yesterday

There should be an option when customizing a laptop to include certain types of cables with it.
VGA, DVI, HDMI and S-Video cables should be available to choose from. 3 Comments »

use open firmware on all systems

Service and Support submitted by dgilmore Yesterday

Rather than using a closed bios that is limited in functionality. Use open firmware http://www.openfirmware.org/ on all systems. it gives greater flexibility and will allow dell to provide open source solutions from top to bottom. Comment »

Bulk Shipping

Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zgamer 06/05/07

This is in focus to purchasing multiple desktops and notebooks.

When purchasing systems from Dell we tend to purchase a large number (a couple hundred) systems once a year. Upon delivery I am amazed by the amount of waste produced.

IDEA: Bulk ship desktops where five systems are in one box or ten laptops per box. This would allow to cut down on the amount of packing material greatly.

On a side note when we have had systems arrive in this method there tends to be a far fewer chance of getting systems damaged in shipping :) 5 Comments »

Replace RJ45 phone jack with an USB LAN adapter

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jonathan_hsu Apr 21

If Dell is going after the low cost UMPC market, I would suggest replacing the RJ45 phone jack with an optional USB2.0 Ethernet adapter, like a small and elegant adapter showing here, http://www.zoltantech.com/UsbLanA.php.

For reasons such as:
1. Now a days wireless is a must-have, and the Ethernet becomes redundant, more than 80% of the time it is not used.
2. An Ethernet controller consumes power even when the CAT5 cable is not plugged in. So you conserve power and prolong battery usage time between charges.
3. On the same token, less heat generated. Therefore less chance for the fan to turn on if it is needed at all.
4. Save you a PCIe slot.
5. Save you real state for thinner body design by not having RJ45 phone jack.
6. Save BOM cost. 10 Comments »

Have more then one fan speed for the inspiron 1525

Inspiron products submitted by thundergrey Yesterday

All the insprion 1525 has is "High" fan speed. this makes it loud and annoying. My 1520 has a "low" (2250RPM) and a "high" (3500RPM) setting, and when its on "low" you cant even hear it. this should be included on the 1525. Comment »

STOP MERGING until you get an Unmerge feature.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Yesterday

Wow - the merges get stranger and stranger. Today we see the idea
"Use Hardware with Open Sourced Drivers" merged with the idea "Have Ubuntu on Dell One"
. For whomever merged these, do you realize that the Dell One is a model of Dell computer, and as far as I can tell has nothing at all to do with Open Sourced Drivers?

That's perhaps even worse than the idea for a 20" laptop being merged with an idea for a desktop-with-built-in-printer, and even worse than the idea requesting packaged software sold on Dell's web site being merged with an idea requesting easier to find links to hardware on the web site

This Idea is to stop merging until IdeaStorm has a working Unmerge feature so the admins can undo the rather silly merges that seem to be happening more and more. 3 Comments »

Label the CDs with which models they affect

Simplify IT submitted by djtansey 2 days ago

Label the Resource CDs, and any other machine-specific CDs, with a list of which models it supports. This would make it much easier for IT departments to file their resource CDs for further use. 2 Comments »

XPS laptops should have more designs to choose from

XPS products, Laptops submitted by james-94 3 days ago

XPS laptops should have more color choices and more designs.
Dell should make some more cool patterns like what HP has or add some of the designs and colors from the Inspiron notebooks. 5 Comments »

Something like Asus's "Splashtop" fast-booting secure web-surfing environment.

New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz 3 days ago

Asus is putting their
Splashtop environment in all their new motherboards.

Splashtop is described by DeviceVM as a "secure web-surfing environment", and is embedded on motherboards so that it can be booted within seconds, as an alternative to booting up a full operating system. ...

"In response to great user feedback, our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard-product portfolio, ...

"Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance"

I'd very much like to simply turn my Dell's on and off like any other appliance, and be able to instantly launch a web browser without even having to wait for a hard disk to spin up. 2 Comments »

Duo PC

Desktops submitted by nkama May 18

I would like to share an idea I have thinking last time, about of creation of one PC with function of two PC's. I mean, one pc being used by two people with two different desktop and processing different data, just like people using two computer normally. This idea raised after noticing that many household face more and more need of buying two or more computers for the family members. And to me, woould sound better if your company produces a pc with function of two pc's and supplying information to two different monitors with their keyboard, and preferably a wireless pc and monitors as well the keyboards. These pc's could be used in the companies as well as in the offices.

With kind regards,

Have VGA port with locking nuts on all laptops, not just Latitudes

Laptops submitted by donut May 18

[This isn't about whether or not to have a 15-pin VGA port, but applies to laptops which do have one of those ports.]

The VGA port on Latitude laptops has holes for the locking screws on VGA cables, so the video cable can be securely fastened to the computer.

For some reason, some/most Inspiron and Vostro laptops don't have those, so it's not possible to securely attach a VGA cable to those laptops. Also, since most VGA cables have locking screws, over time the laptop casing next to the VGA connector could become damaged where the ends of the cable screws press against it. 1 Comment »
