Buy a laptop, get free ipod SHOULD = buy a laptop, get free ZUNE

Advertising and Marketing submitted by chylag123 Jul 5

Dell could do more to target the college market. Apple is offering a promotion until September where ANY purchase of an apple laptop includes a FREE 8 GB IPOD touch for students. (www.apple.com for verification) I am attracted to the Studio series, and am impressed with the many improvements comparable with from the ibook pro (for example, backlit keyboards). However, a free IPOD touch blows Dell out of the water on comparable notebooks.

Also, Apple's student discount is ten times that of what Dell offers ($17 off at 10% of purchasing price from Dell vs. $182 off the least expensive systems listed at $999 from Apple.)

Dell is making it clear it doesn’t value it's collegiate business. As a repeat Dell customer, this is very disappointing. Please reconsider. 12 Comments »

Tell us which SSD drive is configured

Dell Web Site, Laptops submitted by claudio_ch Jul 8

SSD drive development is in great flux and therfore you can find on the market anything from rather cheap but slow to expensive and fast.

When I look at dell website (dell.ch in my case) and when I configure an SSD drive with a laptop I get just the indication 32GB or 64GB, and no more information. This is not enough to make a decision wether I should buy it or rather go for the conventional drive.

I know that also for HDD you do not specify the exact model, but there the variation between different drives is not so great. As long as you know if it is a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive you know more or less what you will get.

With SSD this is not the case, the range is just too large. Todays drive have e.g. write speeds ranging from 20-30 MByte/s up to 100 MByte/s. I want to know beforehand, what I will get. Thus pleae specify either the SSD models you will use, or at least give minimum spec for the drives you will supply e.g. SSD 64MB >70 MByte/s read, >50 MByte/s write. 4 Comments »

Stay price competitive with Apple

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz Jul 9

Historically, anytime I compared equal priced hardware from Dell and Apple, Dell came out way ahead. Today I read a PC World article claiming Apple is cheaper than Dell, at least in some cases:

The MacBook is Apple's most mainstream laptop, and Dell's XPS M1330 seems to be a reasonable counterpart. ...I configured online a MacBook and Dell XPS M1330 with specs as closely matched as possible.
...
Price advantage: Apple, by a hair.
Why does the Dell cost more?
1. Is Intel or some other hardware vendor giving Apple better deals than you?
2. Does your design team command higher salaries than Apple's?
3. Are your software vendors gouging you for stuff widely considered inferior to what Apple bundles?
[my guess - it's #3]

Where ever your extra costs are - I really hope you can get them down so once again you have a cost advantage when comparing equal hardware vs Apple. 14 Comments »

Make 7200 RPM 320GB HD (& other critical items) available on XPS Laptops in Europe

XPS products, Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It seems that mnany components that are available in the US are not available in Europe...

A case in point would be the 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor which is available on DELL US for the XPS M1530, but not in the UK.

Also, in the US, LED backlit screens are availabe but not in the EU/UK (see High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LED LCD (1440x900) & 2.0 M).

Another critical missing item is the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT which is available in the US but not in Europe (specifically the UK)

When will we be able to configuere an XPS laptop in Europe with the same options that are available in the US? 4 Comments »

Make it easier to clean the Fans on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It is very difficult to clean the fans on laptops...and the more dust that builds up over time increases the heat inside.

There should be either a way to open a couple of screws then pull or slide out the Fans so they can be 'hoovered' or cleaned with compressed air, or a software to make the Fan run in reverse mode that might clean it... 11 Comments »

Sell systems with option of DDR3 system memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jervis961 07/31/07

Dell currently sells computers that have graphic cards that use DDR3 memory while the main processor doesn't. Dell should start selling systems with the option of DDR3 system memory. 12 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Keyboard light

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ccpljat Jun 19

keyboard light

Dell should make something similar to this light. It is located at the top of the screen and shines down on the keyboard to illuminate it at night. It is activated by a function key combination. 14 Comments »

Dell Computers with e-sata ports

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by chasrome Jun 13

Dell needs to supply and announce the availability of desktop, notebook, and servers with e-sata ports to which the many available external drives can be attached. RAID (0 and 1) could be available especially for servers. The ports should support six foot cables (not just three foot). Comment »

All 17" notebooks should have a numeric keypad.

Laptops submitted by winoffice Jun 13

I own a Dell Vostro 1700 notebook PC. I especially like the fact that it has an numeric keypad.

I also plan to purchase a Dell Precision M6300 notebook PC in the near future. I like most about it, but I do have a problem with the fact that it lacks a numeric keypad. If you can include a numeric keypad on the 1700, then why not on the M6300? I am certain that both are large enough to include one, since they both measure 17" in screen size. Include a numeric keypad on the 6300, and I will buy it! 2 Comments »

One Configurator 2 Rule Them All!

Dell Web Site submitted by q0987 Jun 14

Sorry about the title, I just couldn't help it.

Okay, this may just be me but why are there FOUR configurators to use when buying a system with the options split amongst them? What if I wanted something in between Cheap option and Really Cheap option. Do I have to buy the extra components even if I ain't ever gonna use them.

IDEA:

Have ONE configurator with ALL of the options listed and apply the price cuts whilst the customer is browsing between them by showing how total is worked out in a drop-down box next to the scroll bar e.g. RAM 3GB: - ₤15.
If you have to, then put [recommendations] down at the top of the page. Youknow, maybe something like 'Add the Monitor and get ₤50 off'. This way the price will adjust automatically so users won't have to go through each configurator to find out which one would give them the best price for whatever they have in mind.
It would be alot less confusing and frustrating and more quicker for the customer.

WHICH ONE DO I USE!?

And whilst we are on the subject, how come Crimson Red isn't available for the m1330 anymore?
Also, Montevina is suppose to come out this month. Any chance the Dell technicians will be able fit the Blu-ray drive whenever they decide to do the refresh? They said they were gonna when the m1330 was released about a year ago. Ain't it about time they come clean if they simply can't do it. Then we can finally stop holding our breath.

Make 3 Year Warranty Default on all your PCs/Laptop.

Service and Support submitted by thebittersea Jun 16

I believe sales will increase if Dell makes the "3-year" warranty as part of the standard package with their PCs.

I think everyone wants it but on one's willing to pay for the extended warranty. 38 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »
