Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Light up keyboards for business laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Small Business, Laptops submitted by derricktwo Jun 24

I'm fortunate enough to have made it in this industry without really knowing how to type. I can type fairly fast, but I have to look at the keys while I'm doing so. I highly doubt I am the only person that needs to do this. I noticed that the Alienware notebooks have an option to add a light up keyboard. I think this would a great feature to have on Dells business class laptops. This would allow people to work in bed without needing to turn on the lights, or during night flights for a business trip. Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by siger May 19

when there is a problem with the Master Boot Record the ISO can't repair it and we have to go to a reparation company.

Please give us the original disc and not an ISO. IT Is more expensive but , more satisfaction for the customer. 8 Comments »

Vertical Laptop Cradle/Docking Station

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thebittersea 3 days ago

When I want to use my external monitor, keyboard and mouse my docked laptop gets into the way.

Often time, I need to push it out of the way. It would be really cool if we can vertically dock our laptop like a book on a bookshelf to save some table space.

something like this, but for laptops.

small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage, Small Business, XPS products, Vostro products, Precision Workstations, OptiPlex products submitted by undead999 Yesterday

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Proximity sensor for keyboard backlight activation on XPS laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by tovare Jun 19

One of my consens with keyboard backlight is that it would light up the PC too much in the dark for instance when watching a DVD. Varius timeout modes from last keyboard activity is clumsy, because then you need to say hit one of the arrow-keys (although it would have been fun to see a keyboard once with an actual ANYKEY).

So here is my idea:

It would be cool in a sci-fi sort of way if you could add an infrared proximity-sensor which activated the backlight, so that when your finger approached the keyboard the keys would light up when in the dark.

Now, bring out your laptop, turn off the light....and visualize it. Cool huh? 2 Comments »

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT as an option for the XPS M1530

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by darthomer May 25

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT as an option for the XPS M1530 it is as big the 256MB card avalible right now but this one is 512MB and will make Games way faster and better looking than the 256MB card avalible. if Dell does this than the XPS M1530 will be one of the most popular laptops at Dell infact I think that the only thing I didn't like about the XPS M1530 is its poor GPU. The Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX is the same power but I didn't say that one because its too thick this one is like 4cm thick. it could add another $50 $100 $150 to this PCs price tag but its worth it

USB connector at keyboard for extension...

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by mauricio_martins Jun 30

It might look as I'm trying to promote my previous post: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66299/Simplify_USB_wiring_redesigning_s...

Well in these days I bought a bunch of things to attach to USB like USB externam memory, video capture cards and a bluetooth... It comes in my mind the ancient idea S*n and A**ple had: Why don't Dell add a USB mini hub in its keyboards just to improve connectivity?

I know the "word of order" today is wireless... but some devices will perform better wired... Well, to simplify my wires at my desk, I hacked my keyboard to add a 2 port hub inside of it... I hade my mouse cable shortened by a half and now, KB and mouse works attached to the computer via 1 wire... The hardest part of this task was to find a space to accomodate that hub. :) Think that! :) 2 Comments »

Give us a Graphics Card on OpenSource Computers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by kanste Jun 21

Do you want the OpenSource arm of Dell computing to fail? At least put together a little more competitive package with a decent selection of Graphics Cards and Audio Cards. That's the whole point of buying an Ubuntu computer from you. You do the hard work of figuring out what hardware works well on Linux and we get to pick and choose our tailored setup. Only offering an Integrated Intel Graphics Processors and Integrated Audio will not do. It's frustrating because i want to buy a Linux computer now but you have a terrible selection.

Oh and it's almost July 2008 now. Ubuntu 8.04 has been out since April so how about including the new version on your Linux Systems.

Don't pretend to support the Linux community when your not putting in any effort. 8 Comments »

The Anywhere Mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by chrystal Jun 30

Hello all, my idea is to make gloves that has all the characteristics of a mouse. To which any surface, even air can be used to control the cursor. Right clicking can be controlled by the index finger, dragging fuctions can be assigned to the middle finger, grabbing and moving an entire window could be initialized by making a fist and moving the window, by pressing a function button on the back of glove, a keyboard appears on the screen which is controlled by the positioning of sensors on the fingers, to which information can inputted into the system, (may be great for data entry, etc...). No more need for space for your mouse on a flat surface, no more need for keyboard drawers, extreme space saver. Also, the glove can be turned on & off if the need arises to do other types of work where the utilizing the computer is not involved. 3 Comments »

Electronic Note Card with Universal Remote Capabilities

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by dtammara Jun 30

Electronic note card device used in conjuction with projectors (that can be programmed to work with multiple brands of projectors) will free speakers, presenters, teachers, etc. from behind podiums with the confidence of delivering a flawless presentation. The LCD reference screen will act as an at a glance reference guide enabling one to stay on track when dealing with the numerous questions and unforseen events that can be a distraction during a lesson or presentations.

This device will enable the presenter to interact more with the audience while remotely controlling slides on the projector. Memory card storage will allow for easy storage, editing and transmission.

left hand cooling vent

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by c_alexandre Jun 24

when you play WoW your left hand rests on the console sometimes for hours. Dell has the only WoW dedicated gaming system so i think you can understand that when you have your 1st three fingers of your left hand on the "W","D", and "A" keys this rests the heal of your hand on the same place for hours creating a Hotspot. perhaps a raised/vented area would work or at least a large vent to the front or side of this area would help. Best Palms for sales Reps out there

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by damanleo Jun 30

Being a sales rep that works out of a car I would like to see a Palm with WI-Fi capability for faster service and also built in a phone internet similar to cell phones so that email can be check anywhere anytime. I want all the standard features of a palm like word and excell. Most important would be Outlook. I don't want phone calling because when your in the middle of an important email I don't like when calls come in. I just want something to use everyday in the car when I'm parked to view important emails and save my contacts. If it can come with memory that is large enough to hold a USB size stuff that would be great. That way when I'm done meeting with a customer I could email them things from my USB like pre-made letters about our company etc. It would be like using a labtop I know but smaller so that I don't have to worry about it getting seen in my car and stolen. Cells phone don't have this capability nor offer the programs that many people need. 1 Comment »

Marry Bluetooth technology with MIDI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by derrick@ Jun 30

Midi and Bluetooth are a match made in heaven for musicians and audio engineers. With these 2 techs integrated together, wireless midi keyboards, drum machines, laptops, desktops, complex light rigs
can easily work together wirelessly from a central control device without the sometimes undependable midi cable that can sometimes fail during a critical performance or setup.Tracing down a bad cable during a performance is the last thing you want to do. If 802.11n works better, then let's use that. Take the lead in getting the music hardware manufacturers to do something about the 25+ year old midi spec. Comment »
