Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Allow option for "Automatically Detect Proxy Settings" in Location Profiler

Broadband and Mobility submitted by chrisp123 May 5

I use the Dell QuickSet Location Profiler to adjust my default printer and control my wireless adapter. However, there is an annoying problem with the Location Profiler: whenever the Location Profiler changes the location, it turns off Internet Explorer's ability to automatically detect the proxy settings of the current network. Location Profiler has a way to specify proxy settings, but it does not provide a way to allow Internet Explorer to automatically detect proxy settings. Every time I change locations, I have to go to Internet Explorer's Tools menu, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, check the box next to "Automatically Detect Settings", clik OK, close Internet Explorer, then re-open Internet Explorer. Please have your software engineers add an option button to the Browser tab of the Location Profiler settings to specify that Internet Explorer should automatically detect proxy settings. Comment »

A5 sized notebook computer

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by layzer Apr 20

In the battle for mobility everyone is trying to make an ultra-thin notebook - however there are few choices for smaller footprint notebooks which are A5 sized (as big as a hardcover book). I think this would be an excellent form factor for mobility and usability. The rise of the Windows Mobile PDA should support this need - if people are trying to do emails and even spreadsheets on a PDA then an A5 sized device is not too small! 2 Comments »

Ati mobility hd 3870 in m1530!!! PLEASE!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 16

Unfortunately at the moment the only way to get a high performance card in a 15.4 notebook is to buy the alienware m15x. However this notebbok has a few faults to portable users. Its heavy and its very thick. Not a thin frame 15.4 at all. Oh and lets not even start on the price...
So you know what im getting at here. According to ati's q1 and q2 2008 roadmap the mobility hd3870 will be available soon (end of q1 roughly).
This card is built using the RV670 die which produces less heat and uses less power compared to the nvidias current 8800gtx die which is basically a G92 desktop die. While a 8800gtx needs a seriously beefy cooling system the ati card shouldnt, therefore meaning with a bit of luck that it may fit in a more mainstream, smaller framed 15.4 laptop. The card may not be as powerful as nvidias rival 8800gtx equivalent, but it will still be able to easily play nearly all games with maxed detail bar a few dx10 games which it could still play at near high detail. Its a performance class 1 card and is way more powerful than a 8600m gt and a 8700m gt and is also the first dx10.1 laptop card along with the rest of the mobility hd 3000 series. It would only be behind the gtx cards in terms of performance but due to its heat efficiancy could be put in a mainstream laptop.
Also lets not forget that ati cards are ususally way cheaper than nvidia cards so theres a bonus as well!
JUST IMAGINE IT. PERFORMANCE CLASS 1 GAMING ALMOST ON A PAR WITH A GTX CARD IN THE M1530!!! WITH THIS CARD IT MIGHT JUST BE POSSIBLE!!!
So please dell, make it happen!

I wish Dell could incorporate Hot plug/Hot swap for eSATA drives in their BIOS.

Broadband and Mobility, Servers and Storage submitted by bostski 06/23/07

I wish Dell could incorporate Hot plug/Hot swap for eSATA drives in their BIOS. When you look on the internet many new external drives now have eSATA connections because it is so much faster than USB and Firewire. I just got the XPS 410 which has Intel P965 and 82801HR/HH/HO (ICH8R) chipset for a host controller and the Matrix Storage Manager. On the Intel website there should be hot swap capability on the Matrix Storage Technology website http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/matrixstorage_sb.htm http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imst/sb/cs-012308.htm.

For the 3 criteria listed, the first and third criteria have been satified: 1 Matrix Storage Manager is installed and 3 the ICH8R chipset supports hot swap. However the second criteria has not been satified. Dell does not show hot swap capability in its BIOS.

Hopefully Dell will upgrade its BIOS to incorporate this in the near future. 1 Comment »

Keep AXIM 51v...just upgrade it....would be AWSOME !!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by pillsbury 10/08/07

I want an Axim X51V that can make phone calls! Why not be able to have your cake and eat it too? I think Dell could market the PDA phone like they did the Axim line (and iMate is) by having different form factors and performances to chose from. The phone I desire, that is not made YET, would have the following essential specs listed in no particular order:
1. 3.5" VGA screen for viewing excel, word and pdf documents with tv out functionality
2. Fast processor, 520 mhz or better
3. GPU
4. Dual memory slots, preferably one of them being CF (for my 12g card), so I can watch movies, listen to music, iGuidance maps etc. and ability to recognize a SD, Mini SD, or Micro SD card larger than 2gs.
5. No QWERTY keyboard, I'd rather slim it down
6. WM 6
7. Quad band phone, triband is useless in the US
8. Obligatory bluetooth and wifi with the latest specs
9. A 3.5mm audio jack, not the mini usb jacks coming out now, for my Shure E2C headphones
10. 2gs of ROM
Desired features:
1. On board GPS receiver
2. FM radio
These specs are basically an improvement of the O2 XDA Flame or an Axim X51V that can make phone calls along with a couple of other features that were speculated to have been incorporated in future Axims. I'd shell out big money for this device but given Dell's past record of being able to control costs I'd bet that they would be a major player in this market.
This would be a rockin system, would sell like Hot cakes !! 1 Comment »

Offer the new mobility HD 3000 series as an option on laptops

Broadband and Mobility, Gaming, Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 16

Nvidias cards produce more juice overall however when it comes to portable cards i belive ati have always been the best. While i love nvidia they always slightly disappoint me on the mobile graphics card front. They always produce cards that are much slower than their desktop equivalents. Ati on the other hand have just announced the mobility hd3000 series which should apparently fit in smaller framed 15.4 laptops. Thats what the mainstream want.
The new sries uses a RV670 die which is considerably smaller than nvidias current g92 dies. The result is less power consumption, less heat and hopefully a more powerful graphics card in a smaller frame (no more big, thick Alienware m15x clones)!!!!
Also looking at ati's upcoming set of hd3000 cards the good news is that they also look mxm compliant. What does this mean? It means that there may be a glimmer of hope that in the future you would be able to upgrade your laptop with a better mxm compliant card!!!

Maybe one day we'll get the mobility hd3870 in the m1530?
In fact, theres an idea for another post...

Check the link below for the cards futher details

DON'T KILL THE AXIM PDA's platform

Broadband and Mobility submitted by optical10 02/23/07

The world leading x51v WM5 device is only now being bettered by HTC's future "Advantage” PDA / Smartphone matching the Axim 624 MHz power etc 2 years after the party started by Dell's forward thinking product!

Yes it may need to have GPS, EDGE, 3G etc to survive as a Smartphone in this mobile obsessed times but it can be done & the current Axim users will appreciate your efforts into the WM6 platform by buying your products if you reward their loyalty.

Obviously this may be previous if you’re not killing the Axim but most forums think you are so hence this post.

Ron Garriques ex - Motorola were counting on you.

Cheers

ps. For those who require other combi options like say PDA only I request the modarator to open a poll on this topic.

1. PDA only
2. Smartphone
3. PDA + GPS inc
4. Smartphone + GPS

I'm presuming it's a given on the two slots [CF/SD] staying in any of it's incarnations above as we have grown attached to their functionality as is also the case with BT & WiFi. Does much have to change for the Axim x51v to change to bring in inline with the soon to be released crop of WM6 units, I think not if the HTC WM6 units are any thing to go by. Heck the iPhone would also have some way to go to beat my current Axim x51v + Audiovox RTM 8000p voice & data CF card for phone usage. Plus don't get me started on all the add-on projects we at sites like aximsite.com have shared like afarre's X51V & Aximizer as Carputer: http://afarreAximCarputer.notlong.com & the Ratoc.com USB host controller CF card that allows me to use a 169 GB Seagate 2.5" HD portable battery caddy for ALL my media needs at home & on the go & soon a Logitech webcam! 28 Comments »

X51 WM5SE, Axim going is support also going?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support submitted by pedah 03/25/07

The Axim x51/51v is the most powerful PDA in the market today, that is not a combined device, will dell discontinue support when they have no more to sell? Will we as users see WM5SE upgrade, let alone WM6 upgrade released by dell? I would hope so, Don't leave faithful users high and dry. Comment »

Make Gigabit Ethernet Standard on Notebooks

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by techsage 02/24/07

This should be a given at the least for Small Business and above notebooks. Another option would be to at least allow an option for this with an additional charge. This feature is very important for those wishing to do quicker backups via the network (since this is faster than even via USB 2.0). Apple and Sony, if not others as well have this as standard at this point.

NOTE: I know that this is standard on XPS systems, but that is not good enough. 6 Comments »

Make an Axim with a bigger screen

Broadband and Mobility, Monitors and Displays submitted by tmcqueen 02/23/07

Wouldn't it be great to have a real tablet that you could use to take notes on? The reason that tablet PCs didn't take off was the price. I would love to see a handleld PC/Mobile device that had a screen that was big enough to use! Why do all Windows Mobile (or PalmOS, etc.) devices have to be 3x5? You can't do anything comfortably on that. I would like to see a Windows Mobile device that has a 5x8 or even an 8.5x11 display. Comment »

DellConnect preinstalled

Broadband and Mobility, Software submitted by presto_fabien 05/19/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I know I voted for no additional software on dell computer but, please, for people who will choose to keep their softwares, add DellConnect in the bundle.
As tech support, sometimes it takes more time to download / find it than resolving the issue.
For people who doesn't know this software, it's a remote control used by dell support (like vnc, pc anywhere, ...) very usefull when a broadband connection is avaliable.

Thanks for voting and helping us to fix grandma's computers !

As of May 1, 2008, Dell systems will have DellConnect pre-installed.

XPS M1330 with Gigabit Ethernet

Broadband and Mobility, XPS products, Laptops submitted by macavity 07/11/07

I think it would be really good for the M1330 to have Gigabit networking for various reasons.

- if you want to move or back up your music or some videos across your home network you actually need that speed

- most other similar laptops have it. I thought it's standard now and hardwired into every board?

- gigabit home routers are on the market

- I don't want to buy a product and be behind the market right from day-1.

I bought an Inspiron 4 years ago with only 10Mbps 802.11b wifi and regretted it already 6 months into the purchase. 8 Comments »

Build a Windows Mobile PDA Phone

Broadband and Mobility submitted by dealerss Apr 2

When is Dell going to come out with a line of Windows Mobile powered PDA phones? I have heard rumors that this is happening but I would love to know/see more info on this. Dell made great Axim PDA's with a very loyal following so there is no reason you can come out with a great PDA phone. Please make them in CDMA flavor so they work on the Verizon network! 15 Comments »

External wifi antenna connector

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by cromo 02/17/07

I came into this idea some time ago. The idea is simple - to put an external wifi connector on the back of the laptop and a button to switch between internal and external antennas. There are loads of different solutions for laptop users that need better signal reception for their wifi cards, most of them simply increase transmitting power (thus exposing us, the users to higher radiation) while all the problems could be easly solved by adding external connector and some some cheap and small external antenna. It would be nice to see such connector on the replicator port, too. Considering the forthcomming WiMax that will be mostly used by ISPs to provide internet connection I am sure such external antenna connector is even a must for the laptops that will come with integrated WiMax card. 6 Comments »

Wi-Fi Catcher on Laptop, what is the point

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by lukemcurley Mar 31

Can Dell re-consider the inclusion of their Wi-Fi Catcher application as I do not see the point of it over the standard Windows Wi-Fi manager. It is to no benefit to me, actually I have found myself turning off Wi-Fi by accident when trying to use it, which means I pushed the switch the wrong way.

Also there is not need to have a physical switch to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, your switch turns off both. This should be a software implementation, a small icon on the notification area of the taskbar which has the option to turn off bluetooth and wifi with a click. This will cut a fraction off the cost to manufacture each laptop too. 3 Comments »
