Explain the difference between different processors

Dell, Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 26

Somewhere on your website you need to explain the difference between different processors or provide a comparison chart. For example, there is a difference between the Intel Celeron 2.0 GH processor and the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GH processors. Also provide information comparing Intel to AMD Sempron, and their other processors. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu Linux systems Down Under

Dell, Linux submitted by finkisadink 2 days ago

At present it's not possible to buy a Dell system with Linux preinstalled within Australia. This is something that I believe should be resolved as soon as practicable — at present I'm having to buy systems with Windows preinstalled, only to never use that license... and this also costs me time & money as I have to perform a full SOE build from scratch. 2 Comments »

HDMI/DVI input on HD laptops.

Dell, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by impulse 2 days ago

It's great that Dell offers HDMI and DVI-D outputs on their XPS laptops, but is it possible to add HDMI and DVI inputs as well?

For those that already have a Blu-ray player or Playstation 3, it kind of sucks that we can't take advantage of the 1080p capable screens that Dell offers on the M1530 and M1730.

I think being able to use the HD screen available on at least the M1730 as a monitor for consoles or Blu-ray players would be a great idea, as it would save people such as myself from having to buy an external monitor or new TV. 1 Comment »

Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Dell Community, Dell Web Site, Linux, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie Yesterday

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested. 4 Comments »

hybrid design

Dell submitted by bari4896 Yesterday

I find laptops to be less than ergonomic. If I set mine on my lap it isn't stable and it's hot. I don't want another item to carry to solve these problems. If I set the laptop on a desk or table I am often not at a good working height and keeping off the front of the panel can be difficult.

I'd like to see a laptop hybrid where the keyboard is in the front of the unit and the mouse retracts into the bottom of the keyboard. I'd like to have the keyboard able to separate from the rest of the unit so that I can hold the keyboard on my lap while the rest of the unit sits safely on a table or desk. Pull out stability brackets on the back could keep the screen from tipping. 1 Comment »

Reveal Truth About Microsoft License / Promotion Deals

Dell submitted by gear Apr 27

It is now an open secret that Dell PCs sold with Ubuntu and "No OS" except for servers are more expensive than PCs with a Windows license.

It is also an open secret that Dell is not featuring Ubuntu and Windows XP prominently in accordance with customer demands.

It is also assumed that Dell is under a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits the disclosure of terms Microsoft imposes on the OEM licenses, and also the terms for participating in their promotional programs and other inducements to be an exclusive Microsoft shop.

However, in less than a year, the Administration will change in Washington, and with it, the potential for renewed interest in the anti-competitive behavior of Microsoft and their illegal efforts to extend their monopoly to other markets.

i.e. hardwiring in Microsoft search in Vista and making it very inconvenient for a user to use an alternative search engine, or imposing their Internet Explorer Browser by making Microsoft / Windows update incompatible with all other browsers and not offering customers a choice of alternatives like Firefox when you buy their operating system.

Here are my speculations:

Dell is incentivized by Microsoft to participate in these anti-competitive schemes by the following methods:

- Install Microsoft Vista in lieu of any other operating system

- pays a license fee to Microsoft for every PC sold regardless of whether it ships with a MIcrosoft OS installed.

- rewarded for not pre-installing Firefox

- prevented from not offering "Media Direct" or a equivalent system or making this DRM scheme optional.

- incentivized to offer no viable option to Office except for Microsoft Office Live even when viable options like Googledocs, Open Office, etc. exist and are 'out there'.

- incentivized to bundle Microsoft Works with every PC sold

- prevented from disclosing that Dell is a willing party to these efforts to illegally extend Microsoft's monopoly and participating in anti-competitive measures

Under such circumstances, Dell may have considerable legal liability and exposure to anti-trust laws by colluding with Microsoft.

While it may be a year before these issues come up in the USA, the issue may come up in Europe, where the EU has an active ongoing investigation of Microsoft going on.

I would hate to see Dell fined by the EU like Microsoft.

Please start revealing the truth --- because if the terms are as I speculated above, it likely will be the same terms Microsoft give to every other major manufacturer of PCs. 63 Comments »

Empower your India customer support reps just as much as you do your US ones.

Dell submitted by jmxz Apr 25

Quoting a Dell press relesase written about here

Dell's new premium support service ...new fee-based offering ... support team in North America ...are empowered to address a comprehensive range of issues across the breadth of Dell's product line.

While I'm all for Dell offering fee-based support in [country of your choice] for people who'd rather choose products for nationalistic reasons rather than best-value-for-dollar - I find it a bit scary that you go out of your way to mention that this new team is "empowered to address a comprehensive range of issues".

Is this implying (or, worse, acknowledging) that your India team is no longer empowered in such a way? That sounds disappointing, since previously I've had great support from your India teams. I'd hate to think that they're being disempowered just so have have a reason to upsell people to this new fee-based offering. Comment »

The Third Sector

Instead of laying people off, has Dell considered donating employees time to that employee's choosen charity or cause? Dell, the Third Sector Entity, and the employee could even search for matching funds to offset the salary of the employee. Comment »

Provide Feedback For Rejected Ideas

Dell, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Apr 5

It would be nice if Dell could tell us why ideas that have been rejected by Dell were rejected. If IdeaStorm members understood the reasons why certain ideas were not being implemented then they may not get so annoyed.

For example one of the most popular ideas is to have Ubuntu on the OS list along side Windows with compatible hardware. Another very popular idea is for Dell to sell bare-bones systems with no OS. Yet another popular idea is to have no pre-installed trial ware.

None of these ideas is fully implemented and at least two of them are not even partially implemented. If Dell could explain why these very popular ideas do not pass muster with Dells decision makers then it might help.

The reasons could be posted in a blog similar to Ideas In Action or they could be posted in the idea thread it's self.

A good example of this sort of feed back is when matt_d comes on to IdeaStorm and gives us an outline of some of the costs involved when Dell chooses to implement a new OS on it's product range.

This information and feedback helps the community come up with ideas Dell can work with. If we can do that, then Dell and it's consumer base can move forward together and we can help each other Simplify IT. 3 Comments »

Innovation MUST be OPEN - Dell needs to support this!

Dell, Environment, Education submitted by phubert Apr 9

As this article reveals, all TRUE innovation for the future MUST be open.

Save the planet? Open!
Education? Open!
Resolve world conflict? Open!
FIX government IT? Open!

How Open Source (Ideas) Can Win the War and Save the Auto Industry

"The great products of the future are going to be built on platforms for innovation. Products with broad appeal developed by one company behind closed doors are going to be the exception not the norm. Open products will thrive on open ideas developed transparently and without pride in individual ownership." ****

Adjust registration to allow minors to sign up --with parent/guardian permission

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by mkmaster78 Apr 21

Recently there have been several issues with the Terms of Use (TOU) and its requirement of participants to be age 18 or older (as the TOU represents a legal contract). Without changing the TOU, it would be easy to add a little form to the registration page to enable parents/guardians to give their consent by adding and confirming their email. Several sites have employed this, GeoCities coming to mind as it is one I had to that with when I was younger. This is a minor change that could these resourceful minors participate in the responsible and useful manner that they have done so to this date.
Note: Created this as prompted by phubert.
Note: Hopefully, Dell will consider reinstating the accounts of those whose accounts have been revoked because of this issue, once this has been resolved. 7 Comments »

Gartner: Windows collapsing under its own weight; Radical change needed

Microsoft’s Windows juggernaut is collapsing as it tries to support 20 years of applications and becomes more complicated by the minute. Meanwhile, Windows has outgrown hardware and customers are pondering skipping Vista to wait for Windows 7. If Windows is going to remain relevant it will need radical changes. ****

Dell needs to pick up the pace in releasing new designs

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Mar 13

Dell is notorious for lack of innovation and has been making strides to change. Unfortunately they are still loosing out because they take to long to get to market and by the time they do someone else has usually beat them to the punch.

Here is an example: At CES this year Dell showed off an XPS 16 inch Laptop concept that has yet to make it to market.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/06/dell-showing-off-16-inch-xps-concept-laptop/

Yesterday Acer (who overtook Dell in notebook sales recently) came out with its Gemstone line of notebooks.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/acer-unveils-the-second-gen-gemstone/

"Coming in a special blue ("Gemstone Blue," how wild), the new 16- and 18.4-inch machines feature 16:9 1080p screens, 1.5GHz Penryn processors, 512MB NVIDIA 9650m GS graphics, and those Blu-ray drives we heard about. The graphics chip is at the center of Acer's new CineReal system, which offloads BD playback to the GPU and provides Dolby headphone output (and real 5.1 sound on the bigger model)."

Pick up the pace Dell. 36 Comments »

Dell you want to Simplify IT? Well here is the list.

Dell, Linux, Simplify IT submitted by jorge 10/11/07

Simplify IT by:

1. Allow corporations to purchase Systems with No-OS, most if not all corporations have their own standardized installers due to their custom configurations/requirements (hence the plethora of No-OS ideas).
2. Integrate corporate wide standardized OpenSource/Freeware applications such as Firefox, OpenOffice, 7-Zip, PDFCreator, Foxit (PDF Reader), SumatraPDF, IrfanView, SpyBot Search & Destory, Ad-Aware, etc. for non-Fortune 500 companies on a tight budget, if not Small Business.
3. Provide an avenue to OS's which are not prone to self destruct or become Virus/Worm havens such as the Microsoft Windows type do. In other words fully support and provide Linux to your customers which will help reduce the dreaded re-install Windows support scenario.
4. Provide (at an extra charge) remote install of the default OS to your corporate clients and small business, you want to be green and simplify IT, do both by not shipping CD's and manuals and allow your paying customers to remotely install through a Dell re-install server at regional locations to reduce network delays.
5. Ship pre-installed OS's without the dreaded bloatware all IT must remove the moment they turn the computer on before a user actually uses it. This is one main reason for IT requesting No-OS to be offered to reduce the headaches of having to remove the pre-installed bloatware! I bet none of the bloatware is pre-installed on the Dell employee computers! Your IT would quit if you allowed it.
6. Provide a built in hardware diagnostic solution/tool to allow IT to quickly verify if hardware is operating correctly! This is one time consumer for IT, determining if the hardware is failing, well mainly due to OS's which don't support by default hardware awareness (as in hard drive S.M.A.R.T. detection and other built in hardware failure indicators), your pre-installed OS's should have these detection software built in! A customer could then detect hardware failures at an earlier state, instead of when its dead for most cases.
7. Offer all parts as optional! Care to guess how many Dell desktop power cables I have? Can I get a refund for them? Thank goodness laptops don't ship with telephone cable by default anymore.
8. Create an IT support line, IT knows whats wrong 90% of the time they don't need to go through the support script for the Nth time, if I re-iterate the script before the support person does on the phone, can I get a discount? 9 Comments »

linux hardware support

Dell, Linux, Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems submitted by xiandrow 06/06/07

There has been a lot of headway in the Linux support area of computer technology in the last few years. It would be awesome to see Dell lead the pack in general Linux driver support. I would be a more regular customer! The hardware on my Dell Inspiron 1501doesn't fully support Linux. Graphics and Wireless drivers are badly needed. This is a good machine, but Vista just isn't up to par yet. 2 Comments »

m1530 UK

Dell, XPS products submitted by d3fcon Mar 20

Hi,

I've been waiting for ages now for the penryn processors to be made available in UK. Also why are all the screen resolutions except for the 1280*800 unavailable.

I don't seem to be able to get a hard drive higher than 5400 rpm either...Is the UK the new dumping ground for all the worlds old stock? I wouldn't mind if the were cheap over here but DELL charges a premium compare to everywhere else. Whats going on..... guess I'll get the MBP instead and use parallels for developing...unless someone can confirm when I can get a decent spec... isn't the xps range supposed to be top of the line..... 7 Comments »

Stop Making Canadian Purchases 20% More Expensive Than US

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by canadaboy Apr 9

I just did the pricing of a Inspiron 1720 on the US and Canadian versions of the web (www.dell.com, www.dell.ca)

The price for the exact same models and warranty (3 year complete care, onsite):

US: $2331
CND: $2767

Difference: 18.7%, $436 Difference

This is not unusual, and it's actually grown very negative in my approach to Dell as a Canadian customer (and I love Dell). It's hard to understand why the cost difference exists as it does.

Now, I understand that each country is tweaked for it's own buying habits (example, the US site starts with a warrenty push, and the options are presented slightly differenty than the Canadian site), and I assume that it's to maximize country based biases into better margins. That's cool (really), upselling through options and the way they are presented is really cool.

But when pricing out the same products, the prices should be in line. Otherwise, just get the feeling the Dell is really a big US company which doesn't care about other country markets. 7 Comments »

Inspiron Notebook Graphics Card Options Are LACKING...budget gamers VOTE to change!

Dell, Gaming, Inspiron products submitted by syrics06 11/21/07

Dell,

It wasn't but 2-YEARS ago when I purchased my Inspiron E1705. It came equipped with a Geforce Go 7900GS ($299.00 Option) which was perfect for gaming....Now, it wasn't near as fast as the Geforce Go7900GTX that was in the XPS line but it provided me with a good 'BUDGET' gaming computer.

I recently have been circling your website to find a similar budget/gaming configuration and have been unsuccessful. Why?

Dell only offers LOW END graphics cards like the Geforce 8400GS/GT & Geforce 8600GS/GT...Sure, they are DX10...but what good does that do if you can't even play a DX10 game at a reasonable framerate?

I mean C'MON DELL....A Geforce 8600GT in a 17" laptop? My 2-year old laptops graphics card is MUCH FASTER....Whats up here?

It seams you are forcing the budget gamers to either choose HORRIBLE FRAME-RATES or $2500.00+ XPS Systems that the performance will be doubled on in two months AKA - XPS 1730 w/ SLI 8700M - Being replaced in January with 8800M SLI...by the way...ONE 8800M is faster than the TWO 8700Ms....WONDERFUL...
so for those of you that just dropped close to $3,000.00...SIT COMFORTABLE KNOWING YOU ARE GOING TO BE DOUBLED ON IN JANUARY.

Budget gamers UNITE and VOTE 'YES' to "BETTER GRAPHICS CARD OPTIONS IN INSPIRON NOTEBOOKS".

Dell, all we want is the OPTION...even if it costs $300.00...let us atleast choose a SINGLE 8700M or 8800M GT in the 17" inspiron notebooks "desktop replacements".

The "Patriot" 2.0. Made in the customer's country.

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz Apr 30

This is a variation of today's earlier "The_Patriot_American_Made Idea.

We live in a global marketplace with a global economy; and note that International Growth is extremely important for Dell. In 2006, Dell saw growth in Asia as sales in Korea, India and China rose by 54%, 40% and 29%, compared to I think 6% growth total sales. Dell spoke of 74 percent growth in Brazil. International sales continue to be a strong growth driver for Dell, and rather than any single-country-specific initiative, Dell should see how such projects could apply globally.

This idea is very similar to the earlier one linked, and the submitter worded it well, so I'll put quotes around the original text I'm copying.

Many Dell customers "are still very proud to be AMERICAN." - but even more Dell customers are proud to be citizens of whatever their respective country may be. " I would very much like to see Dell produce a laptop called the "Patriot". This machine should be" made in the country that the customer is a citizen of", and it should have a couple of really cool and patriotic color options.

color option 1 - camo with the end users choice of military logos
color option 2 - the "Country of the Customer's citizenship"

I see this type of laptop as an opportunity for Dell to give back a little to the people and the countr"ies" that made it possible to be DELL.

I would also like to see a portion of every patriot laptop sold dedicated to a charity that specifically supports wounded soldiers and their families" -- perhaps soldiers from the country of whom the Customer is a citizen; or perhaps charities supporting wounded soldiers and families from all countries in which Dell does business. 15 Comments »

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »
