Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Dell Community, Dell Web Site, Linux, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie 6:06am

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested. 4 Comments »

User customized banner colors on all the Dell community sites.

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 May 3

Dell recently added a new section to Direct 2 Dell called Your Blog It’s a more open version of D2D that even allows you to submit articles or ideas for articles they should blog about. There is a great option at the top in the banner that allows the user to choose which color they want. I think all the community sites should have that option so I can finally get away from this mustard color and back to the old Dell blue. 2 Comments »

Provide Feedback For Rejected Ideas

Dell, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Apr 5

It would be nice if Dell could tell us why ideas that have been rejected by Dell were rejected. If IdeaStorm members understood the reasons why certain ideas were not being implemented then they may not get so annoyed.

For example one of the most popular ideas is to have Ubuntu on the OS list along side Windows with compatible hardware. Another very popular idea is for Dell to sell bare-bones systems with no OS. Yet another popular idea is to have no pre-installed trial ware.

None of these ideas is fully implemented and at least two of them are not even partially implemented. If Dell could explain why these very popular ideas do not pass muster with Dells decision makers then it might help.

The reasons could be posted in a blog similar to Ideas In Action or they could be posted in the idea thread it's self.

A good example of this sort of feed back is when matt_d comes on to IdeaStorm and gives us an outline of some of the costs involved when Dell chooses to implement a new OS on it's product range.

This information and feedback helps the community come up with ideas Dell can work with. If we can do that, then Dell and it's consumer base can move forward together and we can help each other Simplify IT. 3 Comments »

Idea- Dell staff should read the various blogs that discuss Dell.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jmxz Apr 6 **ALREADY OFFERED**

The blogs across the internet are full of interesting articles on Dell. Here are a couple examples that made the home pages of Digg and SlashDot this month (both rather popular community news sites).

Dell Abandons it's Customization Roots

"Dell intends to scale back its build-to-order service model, while increasing sales of prepackaged systems. The goal: $3B USD savings by 2011. The downside: customers expect Dell to build-to-order."
...
In other news Dell changes its name to "Dull"
...
I'm a fan of Dell kit, but when HP hae beaten you in sales for 6 successive quarters - as stated in the article - limiting the amount of customizing may save you cash, but it isn't going to get more people buying your kit is it?
...
When companies seek to recover these kinds of profits, they cut something more important.

Their reputation.

The great Dell Linux scam

In theory, a Dell machine with Linux is $50 cheaper… but the free RAM/HDD upgrade (a $275 value) is only for Windows customers. But wait, there’s more!

[... the article goes on with a reasonably summary of Dell's recent history with Linux ...]

This is the perfect example of how a company completely loses customer loyalty.

Idea: While IdeaStorm and the Dell forums are decent tools for learning what Dell fans and Dell loyalists think of Dell - the blogs outside of IdeaStorm are better for understanding the x-dell-customers and former-dell-fans that you already lost. Read (and listen to) IdeaStorm to learn how to keep your existing customers. Read (and listen to and understand) what these blogs say to learn how to get former-customers back.

Dell List Computer Configuration Options in order not random.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jorge 06/25/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell list computer configuration options in an ordered list not random!

When configuring a computer a list of options for lets say the processor should be in order based on speed or price, here's an example from the Dell Precision M65:

O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]

Whats up with this list? Totally confusing or leads to confusion, for the average Joe, yet again today I had to explain that Dell just lists things randomly not in some optimal way.

The list should read like this (or in reverse but in order):

* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]

Make it so and quite confusing your customers!

"Developed on a Dell" Community

Dell Community submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

It would be cool to develop a community and/or program called "Developed on a Dell," where people could post and share software and development ideas that have been developed on a Dell machine.

It would be a place where creative thinkers, designers, programmers, dev, could gather and share ideas about new software, etc.

It would be pretty cool if the new "gootube" was developed, collaborated, and shared in and through the "Dev on a Dell" program!

What great PR. 1 Comment »

Website Hosting...

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

I'd love to see Dell offer hosting services, for a number of reasons.

1. It would be a great place to get people online who do not have any knowledge of webpage hosting.
2. It can be used to leverage social media and community between people!
3. You can bundle your hardware purchases with software packages that can assist users with web hosting and basic server maintenance, like FTP, etc.
4. Personal web presence like .MAC has, develops long time business and consumer partners and allegiance!
5. A lot more reasons... that I can't think of right now.

People should comment and add suggestions of why this would be cool. Comment »

Dell for Soldiers

Dell Community submitted by haler 11/12/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

My step-son is leaving for Iraq in January. His mom can't afford a laptop for him and neither can I, but I thought it could be done if everyone in the family could contribute via a site, then when there was enough, you could ship him a laptop!

This could be a great "community" PR thing for Dell -- Set up a website, soldiers could register -- somehow they are qualified, then anyone could go and give $5 to a few people. When the solider gets their laptop, they could receive a list of email addresses of the contributors if the contributors cared to share it -- then they could be pen pals too.

Dell: don't restrict teenagers from site participation!

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by phubert Apr 3

Apparently a participant in the StormRoom is having access removed because of Dell's "Terms and Conditions" specifying an AGE LIMIT.

Is this helpful? Constructive?

What do IdeaStormer's think?

If there must be an age limit, what should it be? 29 Comments »

Dell Rewards (Points)

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by carthi 03/05/07

Why not reward Dell's loyal customers?

We can encourage Dell customers to buy Dell products by awarding them some Dell dollars (points) towards their future purchases or recommending a Dell product to their friends and families.

This is a win win situation for customers and Dell. For example, I will be happy to get 5 points for every dollar spent towards a new system or product I buy from Dell. Also Dell can reap the benefit of customer retention and build CRM database to capture valuable customer information. Using this information, Dell can target the customers with right product and offer better customer service. Comment »

Dell: Provide your customers a website in the community section to obtain OpenSource Software

Dell Community submitted by jorge Feb 29

Dell, you keep adding software to your systems to provide your customers with a baseline level of unusably from day one when their computer arrives, so you believe the sale of the OS is not enough to get the customer started or enough to make them productive.

Why not provide for your customer an avenue to become even more productive by helping them along through applications that will not cost them a red cent? The good karma and well being it would put Dell in are just too enormous to count!

Here's a good start for that information

The 46 Best Freeware Utilities

One account on the Dell site.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by wiiboy12 11/22/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I have noticed that on the Dell site, I have 3 accounts (forum, ideastorm, and main site). I think maybe Dell should make it so that one can have one account for all of the Dell website. The only problem is the people who already have accounts. I haven't had much time to think on this, so feedback would be appreciated. 17 Comments »

Dell: Privacy and Ethics Code Violations What are the consequences?

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 10/31/07

Well I waited long enough but now Dell states the following which will lead to my Idea later below this excerpt from today's Direct2Dell IdeaStorm reference:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------...

# Conduct - Our corporate values and policies will guide what we say - and how we say it. In line with our Dell Code of Conduct, we are committed to acting in a professional, transparent, accurate and ethical manner in all situations - with our customers, business partners and neighbors. Dell also subscribes to the Code of Ethics of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association. All comments and interactions on IdeaStorm by Dell representatives will follow these guidelines, and Dell has the discretion to remove posts by others that are not in line with these guidelines.
# Privacy - We are committed to the confidentiality of personal information, and your privacy will be respected. Information collected for registration will remain strictly confidential.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------...

Dell you "say" you'll follow these guidelines but don't list a consequence of violating these guidelines. Yet, if a user, customer violates them you ban them from your sites. If Dell violates these what happens to the Dell violator? I say they get fired or banned from Dell's on-line community for as long as you ban a user/customer, ban as in from working, touching, having any effect on the on-lline media in any way shape or form. 2 Comments »

"Refer a Friend" Program

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Community submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

Would love to see a "Refer a Friend" Program, which would help build Dell's client base as well as reward "grassroots" marketing through social groups, peers, and the community!

Tons of things could be encapsulated and joined together with this initiative and program! 4 Comments »

Look what I Did on a Dell!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by john_saddington 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell should provide a way (through various social media outlets and forms) to provide a way for customers to "brag" and "show off" what they did on their Dell.

It could even be a brand new marketing campaign, called "Dude, Look What I Did on My Dell!"

People could post home made videos, graphic art, etc, of stuff they made while using their dell. Programs used (like adobe photoshop, sony soundforge, adobe premier, flash, etc) could be also advertised and campaigned alongside, building partnerships with various software suppliers, showing off capabilities, etc.

Customers with "outstanding" jobs could be pooled together and rotated through a monthly contest, receiving prices, etc. 5 Comments »

Disable HTML!

Dell Community submitted by philh 03/18/07 **REVIEWED**

This is wide open to abuse. A more simplified system of BBCode or something similar should be used instead.
Right now we only limit certain HTML tags that have potential security implications.

The UK Microsoft Partner Programme website team has a great Windows Licensing FAQ - perhaps Dell should answer these questions on their website too.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 06/23/07

The UK Microsoft Partner Programme website team has a great Windows Licensing FAQ - perhaps Dell should answer these questions on their website too.

They are the top 5 questions from Microsoft UK's "Ask Partner hotline" - so not obvious to customers in the UK at least. I didn't know the answers either.

http://blogs.technet.com/msppuk/archive/2007/06/08/top-5-licensing-questions....

Top 5 Licensing Questions

I've had a chat Lisa Michigan from our licensing team, and I asked her what the top five licensing questions were asked to the Ask Partner hotline last month. Here are the questions with the answers! How useful...

1. What downgrade rights does Windows Vista Business have?
We have received this question countless times. We are able to answer this question quickly and accurately based on the OEM Vista Business Microsoft Software Licence Terms which state OEM Vista Business can be downgraded to Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition and Windows XP Tablet-PC Edition.

2. What media and key can I use when downgrading? Many partners and customers are aware that their MSLT/EULA/PUR permits them to downgrade, however we receive many questions about how customers can take advantage of these downgrade rights. We advise the customer that if their MSLT/EULA/PUR permits downgrade rights then they need to source the media and key themselves. They can use any legitimate Microsoft media that they own including FPP, OEM or Volume Licensing media and will need to use the appropriate key for the appropriate media.

3. How are disaster recovery sites licensed? We receive many calls from partners and customers asking whether they need to acquire additional licences to create a disaster recovery site. We advise customers that all Microsoft software being used at a disaster recovery site needs to be licensed appropriately. The only exception to this rule is through the “Cold Back-Up Server for Disaster Recovery” Software Assurance benefit.

4. How is the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) obtained for Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional? We receive a large number of calls from partners and customers asking how they can obtain an MUI pack for Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional. We advise that the MUI for Vista is not available as a separate product and that this functionality is included in the Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise Editions. We also advise that the MUI for Windows XP Professional is not available as a separate product and that to obtain a licence to run the MUI version of Windows XP Professional, customers will need to either acquire Windows Vista Business with Software Assurance, or as an alternative to acquire Windows Vista Ultimate through the OEM channel. These two options both allow downgrade rights to the MUI version of Windows XP Professional.

5. Does Exchange Server 2007 come with the right to use Outlook?
Many partners and customers contact us to find out whether Exchange 2007 comes with the right to use Outlook 2007. We advise that Exchange Server 2007 does not come with the right to use Outlook 2007. The only customers who are granted this right are customers who had Software Assurance coverage on their Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003 CALs. Customers who have an existing Exchange Server 2003 and who are looking to acquire additional Exchange 2003 CALs can acquire Exchange Server 2007 CALs, downgrade them to 2003 CALs and still receive the right to run Outlook 2003, as the right to the Outlook 2003 client is stated in the Exchange Server 2003 EULA itself.
