Publish legacy (Dimension 2350) connector pinouts

Dimension products submitted by p1nky Apr 1

Please publish pinouts for legacy PCs like the Dimension 2350.

These older desktops are still usable. Help the modding community by publishing the connector pinouts!

I have successfully transplanted a 2350 into an aftermarket case, and modded the BIOS for more "tweakability".

Front panel IO connector pinout needed in order to bypass boot message "USB panel not connected" message. I was able to trace USB, Headphone and MIC connections, but still get the boot "nag".

At least publish some hi-res photos of both sides of the front panel board (which I don't have, for my salvaged motherboard). That way I could probably figure the connections out. Thanks! Comment »

Linux for Dell Dimension & Inspirons

Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux submitted by jyoungxxxx 02/27/07

I don't know why it has to be so hard to get linux pre-installed to PC's that people buy for home use. I would continue buying Dell PC's if I could have Linux pre-installed. Get with the program Dell... if you work with the Linespire, ubuntu, and fedora teams you could customize a good OS to go with your systems. The linux organization doesn't care about support; we have support already as long as everything is GPL'd and open to support.

Since market share is supposed to be why people support an OS then I guess Intel graphics cards should be the greatest graphics cards right? Intel has the most market share because more people have the systemboards with it built-in than people that buy with the ATI or NVIDIA cards installed so that doesn't mean that they are better at graphics (yet that is). Help Linux build of market share and you will gain more support from loyalty than you could ever realize.

I vote for Dimensions & Inspirons to have Linux pre-installed. 2 Comments »

Home users wants to buy DELL !

Desktops, Dimension products, Gaming, Linux submitted by pitlin 11/19/07

I agree with idea of Lukasz Wisniewski. I was looking to buy DELL desktop or laptop system for well few years without joy: i could only buy some 2nd hand machine, most of the times from unknown source. It seems that Dell doesn't realised that in Poland reasonable price of i.e. desktop system is around 3000 to 4000 zloty. That's around 1000 euro. I still have to choose between Dell's competitors or 3rd party companies products not well designed, with poor service contract. If i would live in some other EU country i could spend my money for pretty good Dell Inspiron or XPS desktop and get quality of product and 3 year next bussiness day on site support. Is it fair dear Michael ? Please think realy seriously about potential customers in Poland and give them what they are looking for. Be more serious about alternative OS as well - Dell always had 2 independent suppliers of parts or prducts but why always except software and OS ?

Why is Windows XP not available on the Dimension 9200 Series?

Dimension products, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by sparksflyhi 05/01/07

I applaud Dell's decision to offer Windows XP on many computers for those of us who choose not to go with Vista. Why isn't the Dimension 9200 included in the models available for purchase with XP? Comment »

Allow Dimension 520 to use E6600 again

Dimension products submitted by richderuiter 02/20/07

Recently I noticed that the Dimension 520 no longer allows the E6600 (2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo). What happened? A month ago it did! I've got to go to the XPS to get the E6600 (which seems to be the sweet spot for power/$). Or, I've got to shop elsewhere. 4 Comments »

DELL Dimension E521 + Red Flag Linux 5.0 works well

Dimension products, Linux submitted by duguanglin 03/29/07

I ordered a DELL Dimension E521 + Red Flag Linux 5.0 suite (Simplified Chinese version, availabe at China mainland) with 512M memory last November for my second home PC. Though the OS was not pre-installed, it was easy to accomplish this task since I've been using Linux desktop at my office on my DIYed PC for about one year. In fact, nowadays, most of the Linux distributions are easier to install than Windows, and, in most cases, Linux drives your hardwares correctly. The OS is very stable and virus-free. It meets all my needs (Open Office for word, spreadsheet, presentation work, Kaffeine for all the audio and vedio files, Java programming, ...). I like it and have suggested my friends to ordering DELL+Linux when they want to buy a new PC or update their old PCs. Hope DELL will provide different choices in the near future for the pre-installed Linux PCs, such as Fedora Core, Ubuntu, Suse, Debian, Red Flag, etc. This strategy will benifit both DELL and the Open Source Community greatly. I'm sure, the day will come when Linux is as important as Windows. Comment »

Sell DELL Products on NEWEGG.com

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dimension products, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by thomasp94 Jan 24

I do all my companies IT shopping at 2 places, 90% at NEWEGG and the rest at DELL. Most of the products I buy at dell are monitors, toner, and other accessories. It would be really great if I could buy Dell products at Newegg. It would be more convenitent, it would save on tax and shipping as well. Newegg is also MUCH faster than Dell at shipping, I can usually get my order in 1-2 days after placing it, compared to a week or more from Dell. I'm not really talking about whole systems, more like...
-Monitors
-Speakers
-Accessories
-Printers
-INK & TONER
-Replacement Parts
-Keyboards & Mice 1 Comment »

Make Desktop Cases That Don't Make Buzzing Vibration Noises

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dimension products submitted by nx3sj4 07/28/07

Every Dell computer I've owned had a screwless case that just snapped open and shut. Unfortunately, although this is eco-friendly and convenient, the pieces don't fit securely enough and I get constant buzzing or rattling noise until I put endless amounts of tape around the case, and that still doesn't quiet it. On my 2007 Dimension E521, the metal snap-together case is quiet, but the black plastic frame in front of the drive bays vibrates and sounds like a semi truck idling. I have all sorts of ugly tape and sticky spots now on the box in my attempt to silence it. Comment »

Trusted Advisor Program

Dimension products, Sales Strategies submitted by eliesl Jan 21

Provide an 'opt-in' service at the time of purchase that will advise the non-tech saavy owner of upgrades available for their computer on an annual basis that COULD improve performance. I spent the weekend with my parents (over 65) this weekend and their Dimension 2400 with 256mb of RAM. It was painful - but we have now ordered them a memory upgrade. If Dell could find a way to proactively tell people who ask for advice when such upgrades are possible I believe you might sell more product and in the long run have more satisfied customers. Plastic 3.5in insert inside empty 5in bays

Dimension products submitted by jonsmirl 08/11/07

Could you make a plastic insert that sits inside the empty 5in bays and lets them be used as internal 3.5in bays? Then ship this insert inside all of the empty 5in bays? I like how the disk carriers are screwless now and just clip onto the drives.

My Dim9200 has six SATA connectors and two internal 3.5in bays. There is no simple way to mount four 4.5in drives in the box without buying mounting hardware. Drives are so cheap now I want to run RAID 10 on desktop machines. 2 Comments »

Quiet, please! ssssssssshhhhhhh....

Dimension products submitted by camper 06/23/07

I just purchased a E520 Dimension desktop. The main fan is very quiet, and the CPU cooling is nicely designed (thank-you!). However, the power supply fan is noisy. I realize the constraints placed upon Dell by their low-margin business model, and I was willing to swap out the noisy power supply for a quiet one. Then I discovered the proprietary nature of the power supplies that Dell uses.

If all Dell can provide is noisy power supplies, can you at least use standard power supply form factors so that I can put a quiet power supply in the place of the noisy ones that Dell supplies? 6 Comments »

Sell C521n without OS outside the US (e.g. Germany)

Dell, Dimension products, Operating Systems submitted by felix.schwarz 07/14/07

I want to buy the C521 without an OS preinstalled. The Dell Dimension C521 is currrently not part of the n Series in Germany so it can't be easily bought without OS. It is available as C521n in the US.

Please add this system to the n Series in all countries, especially Germany. Comment »

More video card choices

Dimension products, Gaming submitted by stretch4x4 04/30/07

I would like to see dell offer a wider range of graphics cards, especially on its lower end desktops. The C521, E520 and E521 can all be customised to descent specifications except for the graphics card, instead you have to move up to the 9200 just to get a better graphics card but this bumps the whole price up by at least a $1000. If the lower models also came with the option of an nvidia 8800gts or even a nvidia 7900 these could be really good machines without stretching the budget too far. Comment »

Dimension 9150 stock Heatsink

Dimension products submitted by proto 12/07/07

So I was taking apart my Dell to clean it out, and for the first time in 4 years I actually removed the entire heatsink and cleaned it out.

What do I find? Well, I was expecting a pretty mediocre heatsink, nothing special. To my surprise, it's actually made quite well, and looks like a pretty decent heatsink. Along the lines of a smaller Thermalright styled hs. Altought I couldn't tell whether it was an Intel hs or a Dell proprietary.

Well, it seems the heatsink needs to be clipped and screwed in to the Dell 'air-duct'. Considering the stock CPU fan is rather week(and I mean week, like the kind of fan someone would use in a 'silent' PC), this air duct does nothing more than restrict the heat dissipation. Which, of course, is what a hs is all about right? Not only this, but the thermal paste that was used is so degraded that it's really not doing much anymore.

Here's my idea.

1. Replace Stock fan. Easy

2. Remove Air Duct. Easy.

3. Fabricate or buy brackets to install the heatsink without the air duct.

4. Should I really do this now, anyway? I mean, my Asus Maximus is coming for Christmas...and the Q9450's(which I'm buying one :D) comes out Jan 20th. I mean, I'll have a new system by Feb, so this probably isn't worth it. But could be a fun little mod to increase airflow and heat dissipation in the case. My 7950GT runs idle around 48, and load around 55/56. Not acceptable in my opinion for a GPU. 3 Comments »

Better Computer Information

Dimension products submitted by beamermt25 03/21/07

About 7 months ago, my parents purchased a B110 from Dell not knowing a whole lot, they didn't want to spend TOO much money on a computer, but they wanted something rather nice. Now a few months later, I went to do a few upgrades and found that the computer only had PCI slots. No AGP or PCIe (not that I would expect PCIe), and of course its much too late to return the unit. Now we all understand that low end means low end, but I belive Dell has a responsibility to fully inform their customers as to what they are getting. We could have gone elsewhere and spend the same amount for something a bit more upgradable. 2 Comments »
