Multiple Hard drive support for 17" Precision laptop line

Precision Workstations, Laptops submitted by surfpuppy2k Apr 9

I would like to see Dell offer two hard drive support for the 17" precision laptop line. Three drive support with RAID 5 would be great.

The 17" Inspirons have the a two drive option, but I think the Precision line would really benefit from it because of the nature of the work that is done with these machines.

I would love to have a smaller but fast OS and apps drive with a larger drive for data storage Comment »

Get some Precision, Latitude models displayed in retail.

Latitude products, Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by jmxz Mar 28

Dell's brand image in most consumer's minds is typically that Dell is a low-end discount computer vendor with rather clunky designs - or, a smaller number of people think of Dell as also having a gamer angle with flashy-xtreme-geek Alienware and XPS lines. People get those impressions because those are the Dell models they typically see.

What fewer people seem to notice is that Dell makes some extremely nice serious computers in their Precision and Latitude lines - that have the sleekness, style, and quality to directly compete with the IBM(now Lenovo)'s and Apple's of the world in the high end.

Seems Dell could elevate their brand image considerably if some of the higher end Precisions and Latitudes were displayed in more places where people are introduced to Dells. Maybe not in WalMart; but certainly places like Staples and Best Buy I'd imagine the higher end Dells would make quite an impression. Once people could actually see and touch such models more easily, I imagine a number of business people especially would get those higher end models instead of vostros or inspirons. (I would have preferred a latitude to my inspiron, but you didn't have any with an OS I could use at the time of my last purchase.) 4 Comments »

How about offering a workstation with the Q9450 and Q9550 chips?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations submitted by mlbuhljr Apr 9

I'd like a new desktop, but have been waiting for months for you to offer a system with a Q9450 or Q9550 CPU.

I can't justify the expense of a Xeon-based workstation or one with a $1500(?) CPU such as the QX9650 for my desktop. On the T3400, your next cheaper chip is the Q6700 for $670 less. The Q6600 and Q6700 cost about the same as the Q9450 and Q9550, but use 65 nm instead of 45 nm technology and have only 2/3rds of the cache. The front-side bus is also only 1066 MT/s instead of 1333 MT/s as it is on the Q9450 and Q9550.

I'll place my order as soon as you offer one. Otherwise, I'll continue to wait. I'm also recommending that my coworkers wait too. 4 Comments »

Precision version of XPS M1330

XPS products, Precision Workstations submitted by sopwith 08/02/07

There is a need for an 'ultra portable' ISV certified notebook - the M4300 is still just a little on the large side.

If you could offer the XPS M1330 with nVidia Quadro FX 570M (256MB dedicated ideal) then you would have a great solution, especially with the LED backlit screen.
(Note: the Quadro FX 360M is not strong enough with its 64bit memory interface.)

Get the SSD up to a 64GB option and I would consider that as well. Comment »

Deliver M4300 with better Quadro graphics card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations submitted by jzemsky 06/27/07

Been using an M70 for two years and was eager to see the Santa Rosa based workstation laptop. Looking for 15.4" as the 17" is too much to carry around and I have a Precision 390 for hardcore work (solid modeling, FEA, CFD) at the office.

It would be nice to offer a Precision M4300 with more than just the entry Quadro 360M and an analog VGA port - how about the Quadro 1600M and a DVI. This would give a powerful workstation class notebook that can be carried around. 5 Comments »

Precision Notebook Raid

Servers and Storage, Precision Workstations, Laptops submitted by mattk Apr 13

After tweaking and loading the best Microsoft performance configurations in W2K server and W2003 server configurations, I expect more performance from my precision.

I expect 2 bay Hardfile with Raid 5 or Raid 6 capability.

The hardfile is the bottleneck.

Quad pentium support would be nice as well.

Do we have to get out and push Dell into performance? 2 Comments »

More sales like this Dell: $842 off the Precision M90 notebook PC!

Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by winoffice Apr 3

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&o...

The Precision M90 is available at $1,249, after an $842 discount. I think that Dell should offer more discounts like these on more notebooks, as well as desktops and servers. 2 Comments »

Precision laptops

Monitors and Displays, Precision Workstations submitted by gma Mar 29

I have been using precision laptops successfully for sometime, however I am frustrated with the performance specifications of the current models with a smaller screen size. I (like many I suspect) move between 3 work locations and at each have a 24" screen which I plug into and make use of; the laptops screen size is of secondary importance; but I need as much power as I can get from the lapyop for 3d work.

I would like a M2300 type to have the same same specification as a high spec M6300 especially in CPU speed, memory, HD storage, a screen resolution (must reach resoltion of large off board monitors: at least 1920 x 1200), a large graphics card (an FX 3600M would be good), and a DVI port to connect to the large monitors.

Now we can get some of the above but not the graphics card, screen resolution and DVI port, all of which are necessary to do serious 3D and run a second large screen.

I know there is an issue of packaging the system but I am sure you can sort out getting a large graphics card in a small machine. (a webcam and multi card reader would also be usefull)

The essence of a laptop is its portability so a small machine is essential, and with the cost of large screen high resolution monitors falling the ideal solution is for a small high powered laptop that can be moved between locations and plugged into large monitors. Comment »

Dell Mobile Workstations Need Numeric Keypads M90/M6300

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations submitted by pauln 08/28/07

Dell needs a numeric Keypad on "Mobile Workstations" M90, M6300 types. HP has had a numeric keypad for a While on their mobile workstations. If these are oriented towards CAD applications, then give engineers (who deal with numbers daily) what we need, a numeric keypad and utilize some of the wide open space on this 17" notebook.
It wouldn’t cost much more and for the price they should give us what we need. It’s not like they have to invent one for notebooks, they are already being made!
Also allow us to turn off the touch pad so it doesnt get bumped when using the keyboard, we use a mouse and 3D motion controllers to navigate our applications! 6 Comments »

Compete on Price Against Apple

Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by dzar Apr 9

It seems that no matter how hard I try, I cannot configure a high-end Dell workstation that's less than $1500 more than an equally equipped Apple Mac. Why? Has Apple cornered the market on quad-core Xeons? Their $3000 box with dual quad-core processors is loaded with technology that you have, too, but at $1500 less, it's impossible to buy Dell for this high-end hardware. 5 Comments »

Proper Professional Ports for Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products, Precision Workstations submitted by icarus75 05/13/07

I am asking for proper ports on Dell Notebooks - specifically the XPS and Precision series. This includes:

- One 6-pin Firewire 400 Port &

- One 9-pin Firewire 800 Port (Both with Texas Instruments 1394 Controllers)

- Dual eSATA Ports (RAID Capable)

The current integrated 4-pin 1394 Ports are incredibly inconsistent and unreliable for 3rd party Audio/Video Interfaces. I have an $2700 Inspiron 9400 that is incapable of working correctly with M-Audio and Presonus Firewire products.

SCRAP Ricoh and O2Micro Controllers - They DON'T do the job!

eSATA is the fastest standard for external storage, Dell should be taking advantage of this. 1 Comment »

Reorganize 'Tech Specs' Page in a Clear, Tabular Format

Dell Web Site, Precision Workstations submitted by sgogeta4 Mar 27

Problem:

1. The tech specs page should clearly list each and every specification of this laptop that is consistent with every other laptop tech spec sheet so that people can easily navigate and compare specs. Taking the Precision M2300 as an example, I search for the words "kg" and "lbs" and nothing found. This is simply unacceptable, these important specs should be easily found.

2. The headings and pictures are nice but the description lacks any technical information on your options.

"NVIDIA Quadro® FX 360M1
The NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M offers some of the latest graphics technology to produce extraordinary visual effects, robust wide-aspect LCD support and compatibility with all major business

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_m2300?c=us&l=e...

Solution:

1. As stated above, present ALL key information in a similar format for ALL laptops. This means we need weights (and how this weight was calculated in the footnote as in other pages); pictures of each side of the laptop with the list of each port; description of each option for each section (ie. on the M2300 video card section, it says you can have 256MB discrete memory but on the selection page you only have the option of 128MB discrete memory). Clicking on the configuration for the laptop:

Video Card: 512MB Turbo Cache memory (256 dedicated)

Option: NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M 256MB TurboCache (128MB dedicated)

2. Maybe offer a few more details (source from the nVidia page):

Memory Size Up to 256MB
Memory Type GDDR3
Memory Interface 64-bit
...
Max Power Consumption 17W

The tech specs page is for those who understand these figures (even if you don't, more information is always

17" Precision with an integrated number pad

New Product Ideas, Precision Workstations submitted by wnahorn 11/20/07

Seeing as how all other manufacturers of 17" workstation class laptops have integrated numberpads, it strikes me as odd that Dell has not produced such a system. I was excited to hear about the M6300, and then disappointed to see that it was essentailly just a newer M90.

Those of us who spend large amounts of time dealing with numbers could really use a number pad that does not require the use of the [Fn] key. 2 Comments »

True Workstation Cards for M6300

Precision Workstations submitted by tad1214 Feb 11

The FX1600m is nice, but, the M6300 is no competitor to the M90 with a FX3500m. I would like to see a dx10 version of the FX3500m, I assume it will be the FX3600m? 5 Comments »

Make the Precision work stations better looking.

Precision Workstations submitted by jervis961 09/04/07

I like the specs on the new Precision 6300 but it looks like a
darker grey version of my Inspiron 6000. Why hasn't Dell tried to make
the thing better looking? The least they could have done is put it in a
Latitude case.
