USB connector at keyboard for extension...

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by mauricio_martins Jun 30

It might look as I'm trying to promote my previous post: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66299/Simplify_USB_wiring_redesigning_s...

Well in these days I bought a bunch of things to attach to USB like USB externam memory, video capture cards and a bluetooth... It comes in my mind the ancient idea S*n and A**ple had: Why don't Dell add a USB mini hub in its keyboards just to improve connectivity?

I know the "word of order" today is wireless... but some devices will perform better wired... Well, to simplify my wires at my desk, I hacked my keyboard to add a 2 port hub inside of it... I hade my mouse cable shortened by a half and now, KB and mouse works attached to the computer via 1 wire... The hardest part of this task was to find a space to accomodate that hub. :) Think that! :) 2 Comments »

InCar PC

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by roderic8 Jun 30

This is a PC like system that is larger than the IPODs, Blackberries or NAV Systems with all the functions. This system would replace these current handheld/portable systems with a PC that have more capabilities than window mobile systems. The InCar PC system would have a small keyboard that would has a docking station that is incorporated into current and new car models. The three systems listed above all require separate operating systems, the InCar PC will have one operating system, portable, and offer music, E-mail, PC functions with Keyboard and NAV. With InCar PC you will have a NAV system, a Music Jukebox, in hand Internet, and a PC operating system while in your car or on the street. 15 Comments »

Wireless and Bluetooth Hotkey

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by pepejose Jun 4

I saw it in a asus laptop (I'm not sure).

When you press the bluetooth and wifi hotkey, it changes the configuration:

Wireless and bluetooth off

Wireless off bluetooth on

Wireless on bluetooth on

Wireless on bluetooth off

It's very interesting since in my inspiron (for example) there is only one hotkey for this.

Or make available one hotkey for wifi and another for bluetooth 1 Comment »

Allow option for "Automatically Detect Proxy Settings" in Location Profiler

Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support submitted by chrisp123 May 5

I use the Dell QuickSet Location Profiler to adjust my default printer and control my wireless adapter. However, there is an annoying problem with the Location Profiler: whenever the Location Profiler changes the location, it turns off Internet Explorer's ability to automatically detect the proxy settings of the current network. Location Profiler has a way to specify proxy settings, but it does not provide a way to allow Internet Explorer to automatically detect proxy settings. Every time I change locations, I have to go to Internet Explorer's Tools menu, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, check the box next to "Automatically Detect Settings", clik OK, close Internet Explorer, then re-open Internet Explorer. Please have your software engineers add an option button to the Browser tab of the Location Profiler settings to specify that Internet Explorer should automatically detect proxy settings. Comment »

A5 sized notebook computer

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by layzer Apr 20

In the battle for mobility everyone is trying to make an ultra-thin notebook - however there are few choices for smaller footprint notebooks which are A5 sized (as big as a hardcover book). I think this would be an excellent form factor for mobility and usability. The rise of the Windows Mobile PDA should support this need - if people are trying to do emails and even spreadsheets on a PDA then an A5 sized device is not too small! 2 Comments »

Wi-Fi Catcher on Laptop, what is the point

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by lukemcurley Mar 31

Can Dell re-consider the inclusion of their Wi-Fi Catcher application as I do not see the point of it over the standard Windows Wi-Fi manager. It is to no benefit to me, actually I have found myself turning off Wi-Fi by accident when trying to use it, which means I pushed the switch the wrong way.

Also there is not need to have a physical switch to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, your switch turns off both. This should be a software implementation, a small icon on the notification area of the taskbar which has the option to turn off bluetooth and wifi with a click. This will cut a fraction off the cost to manufacture each laptop too. 3 Comments »

Ati mobility hd 3870 in m1530!!! PLEASE!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 16

Unfortunately at the moment the only way to get a high performance card in a 15.4 notebook is to buy the alienware m15x. However this notebbok has a few faults to portable users. Its heavy and its very thick. Not a thin frame 15.4 at all. Oh and lets not even start on the price...
So you know what im getting at here. According to ati's q1 and q2 2008 roadmap the mobility hd3870 will be available soon (end of q1 roughly).
This card is built using the RV670 die which produces less heat and uses less power compared to the nvidias current 8800gtx die which is basically a G92 desktop die. While a 8800gtx needs a seriously beefy cooling system the ati card shouldnt, therefore meaning with a bit of luck that it may fit in a more mainstream, smaller framed 15.4 laptop. The card may not be as powerful as nvidias rival 8800gtx equivalent, but it will still be able to easily play nearly all games with maxed detail bar a few dx10 games which it could still play at near high detail. Its a performance class 1 card and is way more powerful than a 8600m gt and a 8700m gt and is also the first dx10.1 laptop card along with the rest of the mobility hd 3000 series. It would only be behind the gtx cards in terms of performance but due to its heat efficiancy could be put in a mainstream laptop.
Also lets not forget that ati cards are ususally way cheaper than nvidia cards so theres a bonus as well!
JUST IMAGINE IT. PERFORMANCE CLASS 1 GAMING ALMOST ON A PAR WITH A GTX CARD IN THE M1530!!! WITH THIS CARD IT MIGHT JUST BE POSSIBLE!!!
So please dell, make it happen!

Offer the new mobility HD 3000 series as an option on laptops

Broadband and Mobility, Gaming, Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 16

Nvidias cards produce more juice overall however when it comes to portable cards i belive ati have always been the best. While i love nvidia they always slightly disappoint me on the mobile graphics card front. They always produce cards that are much slower than their desktop equivalents. Ati on the other hand have just announced the mobility hd3000 series which should apparently fit in smaller framed 15.4 laptops. Thats what the mainstream want.
The new sries uses a RV670 die which is considerably smaller than nvidias current g92 dies. The result is less power consumption, less heat and hopefully a more powerful graphics card in a smaller frame (no more big, thick Alienware m15x clones)!!!!
Also looking at ati's upcoming set of hd3000 cards the good news is that they also look mxm compliant. What does this mean? It means that there may be a glimmer of hope that in the future you would be able to upgrade your laptop with a better mxm compliant card!!!

Maybe one day we'll get the mobility hd3870 in the m1530?
In fact, theres an idea for another post...

Check the link below for the cards futher details

Create a Dell version of the Mac Mini specifically to hook up to a Plasma TV

Broadband and Mobility, Desktops submitted by mathoda Feb 21

Currently there's no great way to get the Internet on the HDTV, other than hooking up a desktop machine to it. Most of those are bulky or noisy, aren't well thought out, and you end up paying for things you don't really need (like an LCD).

It would be great buying a small Windows or Linux box, super small, very pretty, which could be stacked on another component to add hard drive space easily, with a wireless keyboard/touchpad and/or remote to control it.

Apple has the Mac Mini which has the nice feature of auto detecting and auto configuring to a Plasma. However, it can't stream Netflix.

There's a great opportunity for a Dell solution that could serve Netflix streams and the Internet to the TV, looks pretty, sounds quiet but doesn't cost much. 9 Comments »

DELL ENTERTAIMENT CENTER-INTERNET ON TV

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by step69 Feb 19

All over the internet I see ads for watching TV on your computer. To me this is the opposite of what people should want, other than for laptops.Who wants to be stuck to their desktop to watch TV? Dell or another company should be able to make a wireless or hw connector that allows for to the end user to view the actual internet not just get video streams. They could even have TV's with a built in computer that allows for a direct connection to the internet & a network connection. Also include a remote with mouse-like capabilities. This would make full use of IPTV.There may be something like this somewhere, but I haven't personally been able to find true internet on your TV in all my searches on search engines. 5 Comments »

Expand Wireless USB to All Systems; Add to Peripherals

Broadband and Mobility, Printers and Ink submitted by coachcg Jan 22

Dell - Thanks for being one of the first to market with notebooks containing wireless USB - the Inspiron 1525 and the Inspiron 1720 ( http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/01/03/40345.aspx ). Could you accelerate WUSB implementation into all your notebooks and then into all your desktops too?

Could you also work on getting WUSB transmitters installed in all your printers and peripherals?

Lastly, it would be great for those that have already purchased existing notebooks if you could work on getting them a wireless USB upgrade - possibly as an express card and/or PCMCIA add on for laptops.

For those who do not know about Wireless USB, here is a good article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB

Bluetooth has been nice and probably will need to remain in notebooks for a time, the speed and range of this new WUSB technology will allow us to have much more mobility in our workspace and reduce and/or eliminate the need for docking stations. 7 Comments »

SD Wireless Card for PDAs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by fischerjade 12/31/07

This might sound too simple but why hasn't anyone come out with a SD card that you can use like a Wireless PC Card to access the internet. I mean: (Axim) + (Wireless SD Card) + (Wireless carrier that isn't out to screw you!) + (Skype or Ribbit) = Big Buck$. If there isn't a wireless carrier out there that is reasonable there will be after they auction off the TV spectrum in Jan 08. If there are cards out there please tell me I would love to use my AXIM to call people without shelling out money to use a hotspot. 8 Comments »

Integrate Some Basics

Broadband and Mobility submitted by complexco 12/25/07

When it comes to crunching numbers, the Gigahertz in a Mac mean something else than in your ready-to-go Dell, but let's take a hint from our touchy friends ( iTouch / touch phone / touch themselves ? ) and integrate some basic components such as IrDA and BluTooth, and if we can avoid the lawsuits, Wireless G / N (Airport) would be just as appreciated, just stick a socket out at the back so we can plug in a range extender (antenna) if we need to. Besides the obvious reasons of not having to use up usb ports or tinker inside to install a PCI-based WAN card comes the attractiveness of being able to connect virtually anything to a Dell (Desktops as well) but might encourage customers to buy some more Dell stuff with their computer, provided Dell sticks their logo on some nice PDA's or wireless headphones. Heck, I'd go for some. 2 Comments »

Put ports for eternal wifi antennas.

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by traker1001 11/28/07

I would love to be able to plug in some Hi gain antennas to my laptop without removing the bottom cover for my laptop.

Ideally all your laptops would have 3 external jacks that we could plug in 3 Hi Gain Wifi antennas and get the full 11n draft glory, But really I would be happy with this in any combination at the moment. 7 Comments »
