When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 3 days ago

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

More Big Ideas Interviews!

Dell Community submitted by newbs Jul 1

I loved that video!

Its inspiring. It makes me want to get up and do something. I think its a great message that Dell can align its brand with. "Do something significant." "Make the most of yourself", "Follow your dreams"

Its where all great things start. An Idea and a will to execute on it.

I think these should be made into short commercials. Or even cheaper, a video series like you guys have so that entrepreneurs old and young can learn from them. Have some great speakers, have them provide valuable advice, then distribute them on various internet forums. It would be great viral marketing. 3 Comments »

THE LOUNGE

Dell Community submitted by charisse212 Jul 1

THE LOUNGE WOULD BE THE NEXT MYSPACE. IT WOULD BE A PLACE PEOPLE CAN COME AND TALK TO ALL OF THEIR FRIENDS AT THE SAME TIME. INSTEAD OF JUST BEING ABLE TO INSTANT MESSAGE EACH OTHER ONE AT A TIME, ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS WOULD BE ABLE TO VIEW AND PARTICIPATE IN THE CONVERSATION. YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO CUSTOM DESIGN YOUR OWN ICON WHICH BE A CHOICE OF SEATING ITEM. FOR EXAMPLE YOU CAN CHOOSE A STOOL, CHAIR, COUCH, LOVESEAT, ANYTHING YOU CAN LOUNGE IN AND RELAX. 10 Comments »

Young Einstein's

Dell Community submitted by gcetheredge Jun 30

It’s very refreshing to see an organization as Dell to set the standards in the word today. To be able to have the vision to see that the future is revolved around the minds and energies of the young and innovative. I applauded you in this effort but, until all the Einstein’s of tomorrow are given or provided the right tools, this effort will not bear full fruit. Let me explain.

We all know that ideas and trends started by certain groups cross all ethnical and economical borders therefore, allowing all ethnic groups to benefit from these ideals and trends. But before we as humans can benefit from the innovative ideas, we need to nurture the minds with positive influence.

It would be honor if Dell could assist in sponsoring programs designed around mentoring and nurturing the minds of the future Einstein’s. Hypothetically calling them “The Idea Shops”.

As we currently have multiple gathering spots for adults around the country and the world where they get together and socialize, brainstorm, network, etc. Why can’t we develop computer centers that will allow the young and innovative to gather and brainstorm and socialize. I do not mean arcades, but actual centers designed around developing the fundamental needed to succeed in a technological society.

We currently have situations and crisis across the globe that can be solved by education and innovation. With Dell leading the effort I know “IDEASTORM” will be a tremendous success now and in the future. 1 Comment »

Young International Proud Parents

Dell Community, Software submitted by candacemichelle_1 Jun 30

I heard on the Steve Harvey Morning Show that Dell is looking for new innovative ideas much like the logic behind such successes as Myspace and Facebook. I believe there needs to be a website specifically catered to a network of international young parents. Some of these young people need guidance in parenting. The ages of this free membership would range from 13 years old to 25 years old.

Whether its spiritual or practical advice, experts in parenting should be available to respond to emails or be present in chat rooms about certain topics.

There would be groups for the YIPPY's (Young International Proud Parents) to join, as well as ones they could formulate themselves. For example, Single Fathers, Single Mothers, Married Parents, High School Parents, Parents of Twins, Parents with One Child, Parents with Over 3 Children. Parents of Kids with Disabilities, Parents in school, Working Parents, Parents Disowned by Their Families, even Rape Victims forced into parenthood.

By having this outlet designed for this demographic, young people may find that they're not alone in their struggles. There will also be an opportunity for volunteers to log on and give advice under designated usernames so that members know that they are a credible source.

Plenty of advertisement opportunities are available as well, from Magazines, baby products, learning games, and clothing stores. Young celebrity parents such as Jamie Lynn Spears, Solange Knowles, could sponsor this site as well.

Please consider this idea seriously and contact me if this idea sounds as good to you as it does to me. There is currently a www.yppo.com but it is very basic and visually unappealing to the target audience.

The disclaimer here is that teenage and unwed pregnancies should not be encouraged in any way, but yet and still they are ever-present in today's society. Therefore, we should prepare this generation and equip them with the tools necessary to raise healthy, smart and well rounded children.

It would be www.yippy.com. That URL name is already in use but its so small that it could be bought out by Dell if necessary. 8 Comments »

Expand Dell TechKnow 2.0 to Other Countries

Dell Community, Service and Support, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 28

While browsing around Dell.com I found a video on Dell TechKnow 2.0. I think this is an excellent idea that should be expanded around the globe. Here in the UK there has been a lot of debate about the dumbing down of IT skills.

Like the US we also have problems in our class rooms a program like this could help with in similar ways as it has in the US. I think it's a great idea to identify things that people can do rather than make them feel bad about things they can't do.

Dell really deserves a round of applause for this program and should do a lot more to expand and promote it. Well done Dell! Comment »

Improve the Dell Myway site

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 May 30

The current Dell Myway home page is a good starting point but needs to improve. The site is very basic in what it supplies and can in no way compete with the likes of Google, Yahoo or even MSN. I cannot think of anyone I know that actually uses the site. The games section is a feature that keeps people returning to sites but Dell's games section is all trial downloads where other sites allow you to play free online. Dell needs to freshen the look and add more community features to keep people using the site. Comment »

Dell Community Forum Support - Community Moderators!!

Dell Community, Service and Support submitted by phillyfloyd May 27

Fully support and understand Dell's position on their n-series laptops, that said, why not migrate a lot of the Dell Community Software Forum (for Linux) to community members. Sure, the forums are suppose to be an open-source place to exchange ideas and get useful information from other end-users. However, there sould always be some sort of moderator that can qualify the responses and provide QC.

If Dell is going to offer these devices with open source software, they should provide the same level of support as they do with Vista and XP --- I have been in touch with Dell support on the enterprise level and their Gnu/Linux support is minimal, indeed, it appears to be Vista/Windows MSCEs who dabble in linux in their free time.

There are many community members willing to help newbies out with their Ubuntu laptops ... why not tap into this resource rather than doing this whole Gnu/Linux thing with a lackluster attitude. 1 Comment »

Add social more networking features to the Dell community with Google Friend Connect

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 May 13

Here is an article about the program which is currently in Beta . http://tinyurl.com/6zmwfb

There could be some great features to add to the Dell community sites. I'm sure Google would be more than happy to customize some things for Dell and make it incorporate easily into the sites since you already have some of the functions. Dell, Google and SalesForce are all partners already.

Link to the Google project. http://www.google.com/friendconnect/

A boring youtube video that explains a few of the functions.

User customized banner colors on all the Dell community sites.

Dell Community submitted by jervis961 May 3

Dell recently added a new section to Direct 2 Dell called Your Blog It’s a more open version of D2D that even allows you to submit articles or ideas for articles they should blog about. There is a great option at the top in the banner that allows the user to choose which color they want. I think all the community sites should have that option so I can finally get away from this mustard color and back to the old Dell blue. 2 Comments »

Idea- Dell staff should read the various blogs that discuss Dell.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jmxz Apr 6 **ALREADY OFFERED**

The blogs across the internet are full of interesting articles on Dell. Here are a couple examples that made the home pages of Digg and SlashDot this month (both rather popular community news sites).

Dell Abandons it's Customization Roots

"Dell intends to scale back its build-to-order service model, while increasing sales of prepackaged systems. The goal: $3B USD savings by 2011. The downside: customers expect Dell to build-to-order."
...
In other news Dell changes its name to "Dull"
...
I'm a fan of Dell kit, but when HP hae beaten you in sales for 6 successive quarters - as stated in the article - limiting the amount of customizing may save you cash, but it isn't going to get more people buying your kit is it?
...
When companies seek to recover these kinds of profits, they cut something more important.

Their reputation.

The great Dell Linux scam

In theory, a Dell machine with Linux is $50 cheaper… but the free RAM/HDD upgrade (a $275 value) is only for Windows customers. But wait, there’s more!

[... the article goes on with a reasonably summary of Dell's recent history with Linux ...]

This is the perfect example of how a company completely loses customer loyalty.

Idea: While IdeaStorm and the Dell forums are decent tools for learning what Dell fans and Dell loyalists think of Dell - the blogs outside of IdeaStorm are better for understanding the x-dell-customers and former-dell-fans that you already lost. Read (and listen to) IdeaStorm to learn how to keep your existing customers. Read (and listen to and understand) what these blogs say to learn how to get former-customers back.

Please see richard_b's comment about Dell reading blogs

Provide Feedback For Rejected Ideas

Dell, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Apr 5

It would be nice if Dell could tell us why ideas that have been rejected by Dell were rejected. If IdeaStorm members understood the reasons why certain ideas were not being implemented then they may not get so annoyed.

For example one of the most popular ideas is to have Ubuntu on the OS list along side Windows with compatible hardware. Another very popular idea is for Dell to sell bare-bones systems with no OS. Yet another popular idea is to have no pre-installed trial ware.

None of these ideas is fully implemented and at least two of them are not even partially implemented. If Dell could explain why these very popular ideas do not pass muster with Dells decision makers then it might help.

The reasons could be posted in a blog similar to Ideas In Action or they could be posted in the idea thread it's self.

A good example of this sort of feed back is when matt_d comes on to IdeaStorm and gives us an outline of some of the costs involved when Dell chooses to implement a new OS on it's product range.

This information and feedback helps the community come up with ideas Dell can work with. If we can do that, then Dell and it's consumer base can move forward together and we can help each other Simplify IT. 3 Comments »

Dell: don't restrict teenagers from site participation!

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by phubert Apr 3

Apparently a participant in the StormRoom is having access removed because of Dell's "Terms and Conditions" specifying an AGE LIMIT.

Is this helpful? Constructive?

What do IdeaStormer's think?

If there must be an age limit, what should it be? 29 Comments »

Allow Under 18s To Post On IdeaStorm

Dell Community, IdeaStorm, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie Mar 30

Recently there has been some discussion over on Dell Forums about under 18s not being allowed to post on IdeaStorm. While I am aware there are legal obligations Dell must meet to accommodate children of certain age groups. I think Dell are being overly paranoid in this matter.

COPPA so far as I know applies to children under the age of 13. So I'm just not sure what the issue is here? Perhaps one of the moderators can explain things to us as this new policy has seen the exclusion of some of IdeaStorms most valuable members, davmcn and citreontech. Both of whom have acted very responsibly while posting on IdeaStorm.

Simplify IT

Recently Dell has also made a big deal about simplifying IT. Well where XPS gaming rigs are concerned, wouldn't it be simpler to talk to "kids" directly rather than having to go through their parents? From what I've read on IdeaStorm with examples like "Joe Sixpack" and "Mon & Pop", the general American adult population seem to be a bit thick when it comes to using and understanding PCs. That's not meant to be an insult. It's just how it looks from the outside looking in.

I think you might need the "kids" input after all. Drop the age limit to 13. 12 Comments »

Link Friends on Dell to Share Activity

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by integral Mar 26

Just like on Facebook where you can share your activities with friends, there should be a service from Dell where people can link up with their friends and follow what they are doing. Dell could even have special discounts or promotions if groups of friends decide to buy the same thing. There could be a wish list section so friends could buy things for each other. Since a lot of people don't spend a lot of time on the Dell site, the communications could come from emails and texts so everyone could see what was happening. I get a lot of emails from Dell but I think I would read them more if they were also mentioning what my friends were buying. Instead of making people try to think of all their friends that are Dell registered buyers, if you could import your friend lists from your social sites that would be cool. Comment »

Add Number of posts you solved to Dashboard and member profile at Dell Community Forum

Dell Community submitted by pudgyone Mar 26

Add the number to Dashboard the number of posts you solved. There has been a number of posts that members have solved and it would be nice to see that added to Dashboard and member profile. This way the person knows how many posts they solved and also other members can also see how many posts the person has solved.

The Dell Community forums also should have Moderator look them over to see if the posts was solved. Since switching to the solved solutions, some are going checked wrong and some are not beong checked at all.

Also what are the ratings for Bronze, Silver, Diamond, etc?

Thanks,

Rick 1 Comment »

Highlight Words Dell Doesn't Like!

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Mar 17

For whatever reason Dell has taken it upon it's self to include unoffensive every day words in it's naughty words list. As I don't find these words offensive I'm often left bewildered and bemused as to which word it is that Dell are taking offense to.

To minimize frustration please highlight the "offensive" word or phrase when a post is rejected. 19 Comments »

Save money and utilize the Dell community

Dell Community, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 Mar 8

After reporting their 4th quarter numbers Dell held a conference call with analysts.

http://www.forbes.com/commerce/2008/02/28/dell-earnings-pcs-tech-enter-cx_ec_...

In the call it was discussed that while Dell's sales had gone up 2% their costs related to sales, general and administration costs had increased by 40%. "Dell said corporate managers are looking for ways to cut costs from the entire process of designing, making and delivering products."

While we cannot help lower the costs of making and delivering products we can help with the design costs. Part of the cost of designing products is having focus groups. Why not save some money and discuss things with the Dell community site's users. This will save costs and also provide good publicity for Dell's open relationship with customers. 1 Comment »
