Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Dell, Dell Web Site, Desktops, Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux, Small Business, XPS products, Desktops and Laptops, Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 9:52am

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? Comment »

Don't offer Creative XiFi soundcards.

Desktops submitted by bbr Jul 14

Creative's XiFi soundcards do NOT support EAX under Windows Vista.

Either offer XP-64 bit alternatives, or different sound cards.
Creative is not a good solution.

Asus Xonar would be a good alternative : http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=25&l2=150&l3=0&l4=0&model=1989&modelmenu=1
But it's price tag is a bit higher too. Comment »

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by parthbhavsar Jul 10

I want a CPU, with quad core processor, and a motherboard that can support dual graphics card and upto 8 GB of RAM.. with an option of different OS,

A good deal of wireless keyboard and mouse would be nice but that's all yes, that is all... i don't wan DVD burner, card reader, TV tuner, or a Fancy cabinet for a cool look.,ETC..

on-board sound, and net card is enough for me.

A simple but really powerful system...

CAN DELL give me that level of customization.??? 3 Comments »

Offer Vista Business with XP Upgrade on Inspiron Series

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by wino Jul 7

Now that XP is no longer available as an option on the Inspiron series, provide an option to upgrade to Vista Business with the XP Pro upgrade feature.

For example, it would be great to get the Inspiron 530 with Vista Business and XP Pro preloaded. 2 Comments »

small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by undead999 Jul 4

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

make a desktop that actually fits on a desk...

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by bjizle Jun 30

Dell regular desktop is very big and ugly.if you ever opened one you would know that all of the space inside the shell is not used. and lets face it how things look and how big it is is key to getting it sold and if dell put a lil more effort in designing a better looking desktop and take that big one off the line they would get a lot more sold. because dells are real good computers... 5 Comments »

Integrated Monitor

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by inczo757 Jun 30

I think it would be cool to have the monitor integrated into the side of the Desktop Tower. There is alot of surface area here and it should be easy enough to incorporate a thin LED or LCD screen into the side of the tower you remove when doing updates. Im using a Dell Pecision 690 and that could easily have a 24" monitor in its side. 8 Comments »

Bring back Nvidia cards to the Ubuntu Desktop

Desktops, Gaming, Linux submitted by akincer Jun 27

The Ubuntu Inspiron only uses integrated Intel graphics. From experience, I can tell you that for gaming, this is completely unacceptable. Bring back Nvidia cards as an option. Without it, the system is not acceptable for purchase. 11 Comments »

Flash/Dongle OS install

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by couldntgetaname Jun 21

Instead of providing restore discs, driver/utilities packages and all the other clutter that comes with a new computer - many of which require license keys or passwords that are easily lost or forgotten - why can't users be supplied with a simple combined USB flash drive and security dongle? This would do away with a pile of CDs that generally just end up being lost or scratched in the bottom of a drawer and cut down on lots of time consuming web trawling to deal with relatively minor problems.

The drive itself could very easily be Dell branded and slotted into a dummy port in a desktop case [like hiding media remotes for laptops], or even used as the main branding for the case [no reason why a flash drive can't be shaped like a Dell badge].

By including a security dongle, each system/flash drive pair could be uniquely matched thereby placating the software gods. 4 Comments »

Idea for more visible windows using 'depth'

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by grannybuttons Jun 15

I'd like to see an OS desktop which uses sharpness/fuzziness to increase the sense of depth.

The idea is that while a window on top is perfectly sharp, the further 'behind' it is in the 'Z-order' (i.e. further down), the fuzzier/ more blurred it gets. ~

This would immediately allow people to see which was the window which currently had our focus.

The Desktop, being right at the bottom, would be very fuzzy. But it would come into focus once clicked on.

Why has no one thought of this before?

I wanted to pitch this to Microsoft, but they have nothing like Dell's Idea Storm, so you can have it for free. I don't want money, I simply want a more usable OS. 6 Comments »

Get Splashtop available on most if not all computers.

Desktops, Linux submitted by he_the_great Jun 12

Splashtop is an integrated Linux desktop that lets you instantly boot your computer into an environment to browse the web and other tasks. I don't see any reason not to have it everywhere. 1 Comment »

Custom logo sprayed on casing

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by bbr May 30

It might be a nice idea to implement a custom logo for your desktop casing.

A user could submit a large image that they want sprayed / engraved on the side of their desktop, or back of their laptop. 3 Comments »

XPS 630 Pci Card For master I/O board and rear LED board.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, XPS products submitted by skimmy May 22

If it is possible. Dell could make a pci card That we could connect the master I/O board and the rear led board to and not connect them to the motherboard. we could install any after market motherboard and not worry about losing control of the Front./Rear LEDS Or the HDD/Pci cage fans. since we wont need to worry about about the missing connections on say an evga motherboard.

How much could the pci card cost? $20 - $40 tops? I think that is the least dell can do. and it wouldn't be as costly as replacing an outdated motherboard. that is not even supported by the nvidia control panel software.

I believe this would make the XPS 630 truly ATX. 4 Comments »

RHEL4+ certification for light weight, silent, lower power, low cost business desktops

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by adimayuresh May 22

Hello,
We usually buy dell desktops for Windows, and have really powerful but also very small, silent desktops like the optiplex 755. However none of these desktops are RHEL certified by Dell.
We really like these desktops fully upgraded for their low noise, and size, however our business needs to use OS's recomended by our software vendors, which is primarily RHEL esp the older 3,4 versions even now. We can run Ubuntu on these dektops but we cannot use multi-arch(x86+x86_64) on ubuntu, and hence our software vendors too dont support ubuntu, so we are forced to use redhat/suse.
It would be great if Dell could get a few light weight desktops like the optiplex series (755SFF) on the RHEL4+ certified list.

Duo PC

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by nkama May 18

I would like to share an idea I have thinking last time, about of creation of one PC with function of two PC's. I mean, one pc being used by two people with two different desktop and processing different data, just like people using two computer normally. This idea raised after noticing that many household face more and more need of buying two or more computers for the family members. And to me, woould sound better if your company produces a pc with function of two pc's and supplying information to two different monitors with their keyboard, and preferably a wireless pc and monitors as well the keyboards. These pc's could be used in the companies as well as in the offices.

With kind regards,
