Dell Mobile PC Center
Education, New Product Ideas submitted by bhenders126

When I was a kid I remember one of my favorite days always being the day that the Bookmobile would come to my school. We didn't have a very good library so it was great to have a regular dependable method to get books that I could read. In the same spirit of the Bookmobile I think Dell should make mobile PC centers to take to schools and commuities that may not have regular access to computers. As I envision them, a Mobile PC Center would be something along the lines of the set-up's I've seen set up at electronic conventions for demos of gaming systems like the PS3 and XBOX or perhaps more of a big self contained climate controlled RV vehicle type of set up like the ones I've seen used for medical screenings. While helping to get kids more familiar with the use of computers, the mobile PC Center's could also be used to offer quick demo's on current and future Dell products and could also maybe even offer classes that would conclude with coupons or discounts for future purchases with Dell. The mobile PC Center could even be used to go to Senior Citizen's centers or Assisted living communities to help them learn how to better use the computer as well as to inform them of the latest products and services offered by Dell.

Thinking of our youth today, they need and outlet!!! For instance, in my son's 8th grade computer lab all they do is play games - go to my space and listen to music videos. Dell will offer a website that deals with the issues that concern them. From teen pregnancy, drugs, suicide, school, everything. They will be able to log on to actual discussions group. I know that Dell has the resources to offer a program like this in schools. Dell will develop a program ( and i will be a part of this) for schools to participate. The idea is to be more aware of what's going on with our youth, instead of always being a step behind! Our youth need more information, what better way of communication do we have to offer? They are the "right now" age and for those of us who live in "right now". The time is "NOW" The second part of this program is, Dell will also link the information requested my the youth to agency's that can provide resources. My space and y tube have created enough "ZERO" NOW DELL CAN CREATE SOMETHING.

giving old computers to underpriveleged people
Environment, Education submitted by drorb73
May 25 **REVIEWED**
An acquaintance of mine is going to start college soon on financial aid, and does not have the resources to purchase a new computer. Currently lots of people send their old computers back to "recycling" programs whereby the machines are shipped to China where some kid breaks them open bare-handed. Instead, computer manufacturers could reinstall some reasonable software on them and give them away (perhaps at a token cost) to under-priveleged people here in developed countries. I have no doubt that lots of perfectly decent 3 year old computers get junked - and there are lots of poor Americans and Europeans that could use these machines for another several years. Wouldn't this be more "green"? Thanks!

While SSDs are increasingly more popular in lay-media, I recommend that Dell ensure that well into the future the traditional HD will be nigh available: reason being that SSDs, far as I know, wear-out very quickly after a certain number of write cycles.
Personally for important data and, well, unimportant data, as it's my data, I want to ensure it'll keep on being available and safe-enough, which the good 'ol platter-drive provides. SSDs are too fashionable and for being soft and quick to die. I wish that the media would make this more known: buy an ipod touch today...expect it to die in, maybe, a few years. : (
I like this order: SSDs backed-up by HDs, and only used in those little gadgets rather than for important stuff; tape to back-up HDs for especially long-term uses (suprisingly the tape holds up quite well when preserved correctly). Note: not saying Dell should (or should even consider) tape, just saying I hope it keeps HDs around for quite a while, even considering that HDs are less reliable than advertised, they're more dependable than SSDs.
Thus it would be nice that, when SSDs become more available at Dell, that education be provided (i.e. pages describing the pros, cons, and these details--more ably than I can!).

Electronic copy-book

Introduce a two-displays electronic copy-book. Imagine an A5 format opened copy-book. The left half is a TFT touch screen used for navigate through textbooks, manuals, documentations, dictionaries and so on. The right half is an e-Ink touch screen user can write on and then store his writings.
It is equipped with wireless interface to access a school or colledge or unversity library. It can be integrated into a class network to take part in co-educational tasks or testing. Its functionality can be limited by teacher via wireless interface during testing.
I suppose that such a device may be userfull in some other areas. For example business meetings or training courses or even quick notes in a wide variety of applications.

As this article reveals, all TRUE innovation for the future MUST be open.
Save the planet? Open! Education? Open! Resolve world conflict? Open! FIX government IT? Open!
How Open Source (Ideas) Can Win the War and Save the Auto Industry
"The great products of the future are going to be built on platforms for innovation. Products with broad appeal developed by one company behind closed doors are going to be the exception not the norm. Open products will thrive on open ideas developed transparently and without pride in individual ownership." ****

Used Machines for Students
Education, Sales Strategies submitted by dgillam
Mar 15
I read a blog here somewhere in which the person made a great suggestion. Letting DELL owners get a $100 trade in value on their old machines to purchase new DELL machines. The blogger suggested the old machines be donated to overseas. I have a better idea. Resell the cleaned machines to American junior and senior high school students for $100. This will not only encourage DELL users to remain DELL users. It also encourages new customers as the students come to like DELL machines and tend to have brand loyalty. DELL could dedicate an entire online site to official used machines for students in much the same way Toyota has certified used previously owned vehicles. DELL could even offer affordable upgrade packages to go with the certified used machines.
As a highschool Algebra teacher, I enjoy giving my students access to on-line support and homework help. The students who are able to take advantage of this are making great strides. Unfortunately, many of my students cannot pay even $500 for a machine. They could scrape together $100 and the monthly service fee though.

So the idea is to educate user, why Dell recommends Windows Vista? Is there any page explaining why Dell recommends Windows Vista? hyper linked to heading "Dell recommends Windows Vista®".
Otherwise does not make any sense to just display "Dell recommends Windows Vista"!

Creation of Leaders, Growth with Clients & Goodwill
Education submitted by narayaan
Mar 10
Let me 1st start by bringing attention to the fact that there are plenty pf students across the globe who for some reason are denied of fullfilling their dreams with Education, here i present a layout which will allow each student who is dedicated to Knoweldge & Education while having the courage to start a fresh will be benefited while Dell can also 1]increase their Global Computer / Laptops sale, 2]Increase in Work Force, Obtain a set of New Generation Leaders who will be exposed to the work as well as culture of Asia, Europe & USA, 3] a chance for Dell to grow with New Cleints & Partnerships 4] Global Goodwill & Much More..
The below can also be implemented via the Corporate Social Responsibility or Corporate Citizenship program of Dell.
Being from India the below best fits the Indian Environment but parallels can be made for other places keeping in mind the key factors of the area in consideration.
The university that I know can provide this best education are:- 1] Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA [www.erau.edu <http: /> ] for its globally famous Engineering Physics degree. 2] INSEAD for its management degree [www.insead.edu] Here is how the project can be implemented in India 1] A call for all the students who are currently doing their engineering but have attempted the IIT-JEE can be called to local DELL office in place like Bangalore, Mysore etc., on weekend. The proof / document that the student needs to produce to enroll to become part of this project can be - IIT-JEE Registration Booklet OR - IIT-JEE Admit Card OR - IIT-JEE Performance Card Similar such criteria can be set for students in US, Australia & other places wherever DELL have their campus. 2] The student who becomes a part of this project can be provided with a Refresher / Foundation course until the CBSE 12th portion so as to make strong their basics for the world best education. The Refresher / Foundation course can be done in such a manner that it builds the entrepreneurship sprit in the student by allowing them to device or experiment with a method of learning that is being tested for its implementation at schools & other learning institutions across the world. The method selected while depending on individual student choice will vary from the School-in-Box to Learning-by-Example method being created by leaders in Artificial Intelligence. The exchange of talks & views between the students & the creator of the model will also help a lot in the growth & development of the students. The Refresher / Foundation course can be carried out for a span of 3 months after which the students can be inducted in the Engineering Physics degree from ERAU & the Refresher / Foundation course can be charged at Rs 10,000 per student. The education scenario of ERAU & INSEAD can be arranged such that 1] The students have a mode of completing their Engineering Physics degree in a time span of 6 semesters so as to ensure that there is not much loss of time & this can be done as all the students will have a mid-way engineering background. 2] The students can 1st obtain their degree from ERAU & then alone proceed to INSEAD 3] The students will be allowed to choose some course outside the set Engineering Physics portion of but taught at ERAU 4] The 1st semester or rather the 1st year can be conducted at the IISc campus Bangalore, India so all students from across the globe will be brought to India. 5] The 2nd year onwards the students can be allowed to join ERAU campus. * THE MAIN THING THAT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR IS THAT THE ABOVE IS A GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO PROVIDE A OPPORTUNITY TO STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE WITHOUT ANY BARRIER OF CAST, CREED OR RELIGON & HENCE THE STUDENTS WILL BE PAYING THEIR OWN FEE TO BOTH ERAU & INSEAD. DELL can however develop easy loans on the basis that these student on completion of their education will work for DELL for a minimum stipulated time of 10 to 15 years or if they start a venture it will be in a client or partnership relation to DELL. What the above when implemented will provide to DELL 1] A global talent pool who will be well educated with both technical as well as management skills to head any division of DELL 2] By reading in Asia [1st year engineering at IISc Bangalore campus], ERAU USA & INSEAD France the students will be well exposed to the working culture in all these place & will be able to implement the best also as they will understand the different culture which will help in the development of new ideas among them. It will also make the students to co-exist removing all barriers of growing racism world over which is spreading into workplace too. 3] DELL develops better links with the professors at IISc, ERAU & INSEAD which might be very useful in future to improve the work culture & take DELL to the next level. 4] As this will be the 1st such project taken by any corporate organization it will bring plenty of GOODWILL for the organization & again make it the dream company of many people 5] As the project can be implemented at the Global scale it provides all opportunities for DELL to develop better relationship with the Governments mainly India, France & that of USA which can be made use to obtain plenty of Govt. based projects. Growth of DELL by the start of New Ventures The students who are part of the above project can also be allowed to choose a Global Entrepreneur who will act as their mentor & be allowed to establish a contact with so the student & that Global Entrepreneur can mix their ideas & start a New Venture which will have a Client or a Partnership relation with DELL thus adding to the global growth of DELL. Also once the venture is started the student can be given a position of non- executive director or something & similar position can be taken by the people on the board of DELL to make stronger bonds between the 2 companies. Extra to Drive home the above project by Dell in India:- 1] The students who are part of this project in place like Bangalore etc., where DELL have their office can be provided with a health program which can consist of -> Height growth stretching exercise : Will mainly promote all around body development -> Sri Sri Yoga & Kriya by Art of Living [in Bangalore this can be conducted by Sri Sri Ravishankar`s sister] -> Some martial arts training : Helps in making strong the mind body coordination -> Running & Cycling : while running will streamline the body teaching each student to cycle will promote DELL as a eco-friendly organization doing their bit to spread global warming awareness -> On weekends the student can be taken to the Art of Living campus to have 1 to 1 interaction with Sri Sri Ravishankar himself. -> Interested students can learn or otherwise use it as a counseling session which can be conducted by GIL BOYNE [http://www.gil-boyne.com/ <http: /> ]– this can be done in a class or individual basis as the need may be. The above all can be done at the DELL campus & the students can be provided free pick up & drop free of charge by the bus plying in places where DELL have their campus however each student can be charged Rs 15,000 for the whole program wherein they can be supplied with gym clothes as well as cycle. The schedule can be charted out such that its carried out between 5 am to 10 am in the morning. Any excess charge that is there can be coupled along with the students fee for the university which will be financed by DELL in return of the above written agreement by the student. 2] Students can be provided with a teaching in Vedic Math which is undertaken by Art of Living, a separate charge for this can be collected from the students. What the above will do is place DELL as a true Indian company as these are special features provided only to students who are part of this project in India & will also add to the goodwill & public image of the company. Spread of DELL in the Indian society :- A survey of the neighborhood of the student who is a part of this project can be done covering all building including work places & houses obtaining data the basic data on a individual basis like Name, Age, Home town, Education, Work experience, Mobile number, email id, photo & their signature after which it can be given to the student who is a part of this project. Here the email id can be made a must for in India most have mobile but not email hence the student who is part of this project can select 1 person from a place to come & create an email id for them which can be provided by the in-house bloging division of DELL. The student can also be allowed to select a person from his neighborhood who will act as his local contact apart from his/ her family when away for on campus education. Also a detailed list can be made consisting of data that tells the Social Welfare organization that any person in the neighborhood is associated to & the nature of work it does & the student who is a part of this project can have a short stint in them & see how DELL can help in their performing better when aided. This will not only ensure goodwill for DELL but also ensure that the grants made by DELL will be made the best use off. The DELL FOUNDATION trustee paying monthly visit to all charitable foundation , NGO & healthcare units as well as some way to run down educational institution in the area [eg: visit the above mentioned places in Jayanagar] from where the students in Bangalore hail from will be of high benefit to DELL in the spread of Goodwill while creating a great impression on the minds of the people & give pride to the current people at DELL. Another add-on to the whole program can be that each student can be allowed to choose a in house mentor – a DELL employee will improve the public relationship of DELL. Also the students can be allowed to take a autographed snap with the founders of DELL which they will treasure forever. This will help in developing better relation in the society for the student & will benefit DELL by 1] The student can suggest people to work for DELL 2] The student can make a group from the people in the neighborhood & carry on small works under the Corporate Social Responsibility division of DELL & thus keep the name of the organization alive in peoples mind as well as increase its goodwill. 3] The student can also act as a local agent to gather more ideas for new ventures which can be started Sir most of these ideas came out as a result of my interaction with 2 distance engineering students in Bangalore, India & hence request you to send doubts to me so that I can clarify them for the smooth implementation of the above project as all it needs will be DELL getting into a agreement with ERAU & INSEAD. These students can be contacted / reached via there study center Sri Venkateshwara Educational Trust : 426, 1st floor G.D.Naidu Hall Road, 5th Main, 12th Cross, Mahalakshmipuram, Bangalore – 86. the place is headed by Mr. G Srinivasareddy who by himself is unaware of this idea that I obtained from his student mainly Krishna. Sir here if I might be bold enough I would like it a lot if some one from DELL or by DELL FOUNDATION either at DELL FOUNDATION or the above mentioned address where the students can be asked to come & then all the doubts can be cleared with the face to face, this so for as they are still students & distance engineering ones at that they will be more at ease either at the foundation or the above given address rather then the corporate DELL office. I would also like to request that it would be best if the DELL FOUNDATION trustee could take some time off to look into this matter with at-most attention & least publicity. The place Sri Venkateshwara Educational Trust by itself will also be very useful as a place to gather the student data & process them. Sir the Education which I seek ERAU & INSEAD will make certain that the leaders produced can head any division at DELL & produce a bright feature too it while in their starting a joint venture between DELL & a Global Entrepreneur will most certainly add to the global image & growth of DELL. Sir I also have some ideas wherein a new dimension can be added to the company by spreading AIDS awareness mainly in place where its much needed as in India. Sir since i have provided a medium via which the student from whom i have obtaned to main core parts of the IDEAs & presented before you so i shall be most greatful if the immediate needed action is taken even if it means the presence of a top Dell official in Bangalore, India to have a interaction with the student so as to clear all the doubts & have a smooth as well as quick implementation of the above, this i ask for sir not because i do not have faith in the Indian officials of Dell but for my thinking that the direct involvement of a top official from Dell will have the above turned into a project & implemented at the earliest without any further delays which can otherwise be avoided. Thanking you sir for taking some time of & going through these ideas which I have sent & most eagerly awaiting your reply & more so the action on the ideas provided.

Offer a Consumer Convertible
Education, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bsmmoney

The Latitude XT is great for the business community, but offer a cousin for the Home/Home Office category. College students, home entrepreneurs, and techies would all love to use a tablet convertible, but many aren't affiliated with a small business. Redesign the XT for the home/education users. If Dell could market a tablet classroom, schools internationally would be interested. I happen to be in a county school system that offers Dell Inspiron 600m's to every student. The system is great, but the computers can't handle what is thrown at them. I'd love to take notes on the screen, so much easier!

Laptops for Third World students
Advertising and Marketing, Education, Laptops submitted by roi12341234
Feb 23
Everyone has heard of the various $100 computer projects for the third world. I think its not needed, There are probably thousands of older model working laptops sitting in the hands of American students. If Dell offers the right incentives (a rebate ..) alot of students would be willing to change their old laptops to new models. Dell can collect these old models and start a program to reship them to the third world. This will generate revevnues and excellent publicity for dell, while using existing hardware for the third world. Impossible? with dells control of US colleges i dont think so.

Students.....surely there's and opportunity here
Education, Sales Strategies submitted by perryphilipp
Feb 9
Ok so I'm a graduating student so this is more for my peers, but surely there is the option to have and education option here in the UK, i know the USA has a dell education site.
Every year there are hundreds of thousands of students within our universitys, colleges, and high schools that seek computers for their studies....
Obviously there are the usual offers in September when everyone is starting the new educational year, but could there not be a whole educational sub-site, with competitions, organised DELL events at universities etc... much like Xbox Live is doing with live gigs etc,,,
There would be the opportunity for DELL to not only procure personal information of thousands of people to sell or do with what they want, but also it would improve their general image, and if someone has a computer that is good quality during university they tend to stick with that brand.
I am waiting for another DELL laptop for myself, as they are all i've ever had and quality-wise have never let me down, comparitively my friend sticks to sony and has done the last 10 years.
Its not all about discounts, its also about regular interaction with your customers, on various levels.

cheaper computers for students in Africa
Education submitted by uche2eme

I think Dell can contribute by making computers that are cheaper for the students in Africa. Ithink they can actually make a lot of sales in a country like Nigeria andI think thet should use some of the money they are making from the red tag sales to make computers that students can afford and encourage education.

Link Hardware and software to market to/Help students
Education, New Product Ideas submitted by pattyboy
Jan 1
I have always wondered what would happen if someone as Deep pocketed as Dell would release a tablet PC. Well, it has happened finally, unfortunately currently at a price that isn't feasible for the average student to afford.
Let's assume though, that down the road that an inspiron student version of the Latitude XT is released at the $1500 price point that some students could actually afford. What would make this the computer that everyone would need? A software application, or suite of applications, that organized everything that they did at school, and connected with the school to retrieve the things that the teachers have made available for them.
Two companies make this software:
Blackboard and Agilix. If I wanted this market, I would modify the tablet offerings for students, and acquire both of those companies. The one semester I utilized Agilix' Gobinder software and my Compaq Slate tablet, was easily my most efficient and productive semester. Many days I went to class with nothing but the tablet. I think this is where, technologically, we are trying to get to. Currently I believe Agilix is private, and it's likely that the window of opportunity to pick up Blackboard has passed, as their market cap is north of 1 Bil. They are expanding globally, and if it only gave the added ability to market to the 20 million (or so) US college students, I still think it might make sense. (but then my major is operations management not finance.)
Anyway, that's just one of the things that makes me say "hmmm..."

Quit making government/higher education discounted items cost more than the same items in the home and small business stores
Dell, Education submitted by jfaris
12/10/07
It's frustrating as a purchaser at a public institution to find that almost every product listed in the government/higher ed store costs more than the same product in the other Dell stores. Discounts that apply to all of the other stores disappear. It seems like Dell is trying to take advantage of deep pockets and the assumption that some people make that they are getting a discount for being a public agency.
To get the lower price everyone else gets I have to call up and argue with a salesman every single time I want to buy something. This is a bad business practice and seems dishonest to me.
Please fix your pricing so that people like me don't have to jump through a thousand hoops to get the normal market price you charge for a product.
