Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Dell, Dell Web Site, Desktops, Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux, Small Business, XPS products, Desktops and Laptops, Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 9:52am

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? Comment »

Bring back the Insprion 1420N (again)!

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by zmjjmz Yesterday

Well, after the announcement on Engadget that 8.04 was going on the Dellbuntus, I found some text that confused me.
I quote, from Engadget:
<quote>pre-installed option on the XPS M1330N, Inspiron 1525N and Inspiron 530N</quote>
So I went to the Dell site and sure enough, the 1420N isn't there.
So could you _please_ either let us have the 1420N with 7.10 or just be more transparent about why it doesn't work? (Assuming that's the reason for dropping it; it stopped working.) 8 Comments »

I sure hope you are not finished Dell

Gaming, Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Jul 9

So we got some of what we wanted in the Studio notebooks. That's GREAT!

I'm still waiting to see some dedicated graphics in the Inspirons. I don't want a hugely expensive computer, but I want to be able to run my two computer games. And they are even 3-4 years old! 16MB dedicated graphics, 64MB dedicated graphics. Integrated graphics just doesn't cut it. Give me at least 128 MB DEDICATED!!! 4 Comments »

Offer Vista Home Basic For Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim

Inspiron products, Operating Systems submitted by dawn4598 Jul 8

I know Vista isn't the most popular OS ever made, but the fact is that Microsoft does not want to support it anymore and as an effect, most software vendors have stopped or will stop making software for XP. Please offer Vista Home Basic for your new Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim like HP does with their new HP Mini-Note. This way you stay in competition with HP and those of us who have learned to tolerate Vista will be able to run the latest software that is not offered for XP. 21 Comments »

Dell E configuration that competes head to head with HP Mininote and EEE 1000

Inspiron products submitted by midconsumer Jun 17

Dell E current information indicates no configuration with a hard drive that supports Windows XP and Office applications. HP Mininote offers 2GB ram, 120 or 160 GB hard drive and a custom XP installation. The Dell E seems targeted to the EEE surf rather than the EEE 1000. Please offer a business configuration of your smaller form factor. Dell quality is proven to me every day at work. I prefer Dell over its competitors. 2 Comments »

Have a high resolution *option* for the Inspiron Mini (or other mini laptops)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by chipzero Jun 4

With a higher resolution screen option, you can effectively fit more on the screen using the same physical dimensions, making mini laptops suited for photo editing/viewing or development environments such as Eclipse. It has been an continous development over the past decade to have increasing screen resolutions, and modern software -- ranging from web applications to operating systems such as Windows Vista -- have adapted to that. Going back to low resolutions such as 800x480 or even 1024x600 has a detrimental effect on the applicability of these mini laptops.

Since the recent rebirth of mini laptops, it's clear that people are willing to give up a lot in terms of specs if for a well-priced and portable laptop. These UMPCs often have 4 or 8 GB storage and a limited CPU and memory specs. A lot of people are very happy to make this trade off (as am I), but the screen resolution may not be one of those things that should be turned down. Doing so affects every day use and impacts the applicability of the laptop.

Using a high DPI on a small screen may not be suited or desirable for everyone, which is why this should be an option. One resolution may be to low for some and two high for others; people should be able to choose whatever DPI they would like to use for their mini. 6 Comments »

Offer the Inspiron 1720 notebook PC at Best Buy.

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice May 30

Currently the Inspiron notebook PCs at Best Buy are limited to the 14.1" and 15.4" models, and a 17" Dell is only available there in the $2,000+ XPS M1730.

I think that your Best Buy sales would improve if you gave their customers the option of buying a 17" Inspiron like the 1720. 1 Comment »

Limited-Edition Artist Design

Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by wwojtowicz May 29

Your new limited edition Inspiron 1525 design by artist Mike Ming is a terrific idea. I think the artwork of up-and-coming NYC artist, William Holton, would be a terrific pick for subsequent limited-edition designs. His artwork can be found at: http://www.williamholton.net/

Also, what about customized covers where the client submits his/her own image? This is similar to the customized credit cards that have recently become popular. 1 Comment »

Dell Mini Inspiron

Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by lukemcurley May 28

Just read on Gizmodo, the new Dell Mini Inspiron looks very nice indeed. (http://gizmodo.com/393815/exclusive-dell-mini-inspiron-their-first-mini-laptop)

My only concern, as I have with all Dell laptops, it has only a crummy VGA port, no DVI or HDMI. I cannot understand this, VGA is dead and has been dead for about four years now.

Other than that it looks very slick, nice keyboard, 3 usb ports, memory card reader, vga and ethernet.

Look forward to the Mini release, but without DVI or HDMI will have to wait until Dell decides that this is an issue for many buyers. 30 Comments »

Have more then one fan speed for the inspiron 1525

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by thundergrey May 21

All the insprion 1525 has is "High" fan speed. this makes it loud and annoying. My 1520 has a "low" (2250RPM) and a "high" (3500RPM) setting, and when its on "low" you cant even hear it. this should be included on the 1525. Comment »

Use Latitude keyboard layout in Vostro laptops (standard Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDown position)

Inspiron products, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by donut May 17

Latitude laptops have a pretty nice key layout.

I think Vostro laptops, which are also business-oriented, should either use the exact same keyboard as Latitudes, or at least the same layout. The Vostro keyboard has several deficiencies compared with the Latitude ones.

For example the Latitude D830 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/lat_d830.jpg
(Warning: very large picture. If anyone has the URL for a picture with a more head-on view of the keyboard, please post here.)

The Ins, Del, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys are in the same 3x2 layout as a standard desktop PC keyboard, at the top right of the keyboard. So it will be easy to adapt between using a desktop keyboard and the laptop one.

Also, the right part of Caps Lock is recessed to reduce the chance of accidentally pressing it, and the cursor keys are the same size as letter keys. (It's not perfect though; who knows why the Windows menu key is at the top rather than to the right of the space bar?)

By comparison, see the Vostro 1710 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/vostro_171...
(Warning: another large picture)

Those six keys are in non-standard positions, in particular the PgUp, PgDown, Home and End keys are all on the bottom row underneath the numeric keypad. The Caps Lock key is not recessed, and the cursor keys are smaller than normal. (At least the Windows menu key is in the right place!) 1 Comment »

Add dedicated graphics to all Inspiron laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 25

I want dedicated graphics to be added as an option on all the Inspiron laptops. I don't have a lot of money and can't afford the XPS systems. At least give the option for 128 MB dedicated on all Inspirons. Comment »

New Inspiron / Laptop Keyboards that do not "Catch" fingers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by gear Apr 18

The Inspiron 1525's keyboard (which is standard across the Dell Laptop line - I believe - has a terrible problem.

The low profile keys have a tendency of "catching" fingers If you should depress the key at the edge close enough to touch the edge of the next (not depressed) key.

If you have big fingers, this problem gets more serious.

The old Dell 8600 I had had the same flaw which can cause key caps to be detached if they happen to "catch" my finger.

What is needed is to redesign the keyboard, increasing the key's side skirt depth (even if it increases the profile of the keyboard slightly) to prevent this "catching".

A even better idea is to offer replacement keyboards that have different feels to them, ranging from tactile keyboards with or without a "click", to ones that are "hard" vs. "soft" feel.

Finally, the silver color of the Inspiron 1525 keyboard has another annoying flaw, which is it reflects and causes glares if used in bright lights.

Can you make the keyboard in different colors that do not reflect as much light? 1 Comment »

"Hot Swap Hard Drive" for both the Inspiron & XPS series

Inspiron products, Servers and Storage, XPS products submitted by hal2001 Apr 17

It saves data, time, headaches and work. I have been using a Hot Swap HD in my jobsite computer for over two years and it's a lifesaver. Store drive off-site in a safe location and you can still save on-line w/ the Dell DataSafe program or others if you care to. My job site will not allow on-line storgage. I'm not a personal fan club member of on-line storgage either, encrypted or not it's still on someone Server. I want my Data backup as close to 100% safe as possible. 1 Comment »

Unlock Sound Card Features on Inspiron Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by tigerforce Apr 13

The sound card on the Dell E1705 (and probably most recent Inspiron laptop can support all of these features http://www.sigmatel.com/products/pcaudio/notebook/stac9200.aspx but they have all been locked out of the software driver that Dell gives us customers. Additionally their are no ASIO drivers available from Dell and I really need this for my recording projects. Having the other features like setting both my audio jacks to outputs, manually setting sample rates and latency, and virtual surround sound would be soooooo Cool!
Now before you start calling Dell names, let me defend them by saying that they probably thought that your Mom might accidentally wreck her laptop after she messed up her audio settings and then blame Dell. But...
at least put the download on http://www.support.dell.com so all the audiophiles out their can get what we payed for. Dell, you don't have to
make anything new just unlock what already there. Please :) Oh and if you want more info check here (though i don't necessarily recommend this approach) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169312.html

idea for new desktop

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by mooboo Apr 8

I thought that an even smaller version of the inspiron 530s or vostro 200st would be quite a good idea but at the same time not being any more or much more expensive. Here is an image i made to show what i think it could look like. http://picasaweb.google.com/mooboo1234/DellIdeaPc/photo#5186917140449565570 3 Comments »

Bring back the Inspiron laptops on the US Ubuntu page.

Dell Web Site, Inspiron products, Linux submitted by zmjjmz Apr 6

Both the Inspiron 1400n and the 1525n were removed from the US site (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/linux_3x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs)
If there's a reason for doing this, could you at least tell us why? 6 Comments »

Inspiron 530 with Windows XP Pro and "DataSafe" for sale, on your Customize site ...

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by hal2001 Mar 22

Why can't we have DataSafe and Windows XP Pro brought back for sale in a customize Inspiron Computer, not everyone wants Vista or to be force to go to a higer price Dell model or business machine to get XP or RAID 1. I'm sure most of us in this site are well aware that Microsoft will be pulling the plug on XP, but XP and DataSafe are a perfect match and would sell! Give the customers a choice and give then what they want ...Let's go Dell ! 1 Comment »

Beefier (Ubuntu Pre-Installed) Desktop Series needed for powerusers

Inspiron products, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by sethloco Mar 10

The current Inspiron 530N's mobo/processor/casing falls a little short of what a poweruser would be looking to buy. I think there would be a market for an upgraded desktop, because in recent times, there are a lot of linux powerusers who are finding that they don't have to build their machines from scratch and do a bunch of research on hardware compatibilities. However, they still expect top-notch machines and a short glance at the Inspiron 530n sends them elsewhere. It would be nice to offer a sub-$1000 (base) desktop series with specs more like the following.
PROCESSOR: Q6600 2.4GHZ core 2 quad or E6550 2.33GHZ core 2 duo. Some of us like to run vm machines.....help us out!
CASE: Just something larger with ample space to put 2+ hard drives and good heat dissipation
POWER SUPPLY: 500+ watt options
MEMORY: Again...with those who use vm machines, it's nice to have the option of 4GB+ of memory. The fact that the current Inspiron bios cripples this is a major showstopper. As an aside, Dell's current memory is overpriced. A Linux poweruser buying this theoretical machine, who by prior necessity is used to building their own, is going to know that and purchase memory elsewhere.

Thanks for the IdeaStorm site! 27 Comments »
