Offer a Ubuntu based tablet PC

Linux, Laptops submitted by mgrunde 12:03pm

I recently purchased an HP tx2500z tablet PC, and I love it. Unfortunately, Vista was the only OS option, and by removing it, I would void my warranty, according to HP. I removed it anyway, and installed Ubuntu on it right away, but not without many problems. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845911

I hate HP, from their over packaging (see http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/18/32-pages-of-paper-in-17-box...) to their horrible customer service (When I requested a refund for Vista, as described in the Vista EULA, my HP case manager Kenneth became extremely angry with me and told me I had voided my warranty by removing Vista).

I never wanted to purchase this tablet from HP, but they were selling exactly what I needed for a reasonable price (1050 USD for Turion x2 2.4GHz, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a Dell system with Ubuntu preinstalled. Just take a look at what you can do with a touchscreen and compiz:

What do you say Dell? How about a Puma based, Ubuntu running, tablet PC? Comment »

Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Dell, Dell Web Site, Desktops, Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux, Small Business, XPS products, Desktops and Laptops, Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 9:52am

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? Comment »

Laptops power

Laptops submitted by y_eilom Yesterday

As D630 user, I find my self use the laptop as desktop for days (when I'm not on the roads).
I think it'll be nice Dell will give us the option to connect/disconnect battery from power without taking the battery out.
By that, we can extend battery life. Comment »

Refresh with Centrino 2

New Product Ideas, XPS products, Laptops submitted by hagure Yesterday

I have seen other comments re: Dell's silence on new Centrino 2 lines. Dell needs to at least make a press release (or better allow pre-ordering) on their plans for Centrino 2 lines. All of your major competitors have (except Apple, and unfortunately, Apple's marketing scheme isn't going to work for you). What with the Centrino 2 delays, I have been putting off buying a new laptop for several months, and if Dell doesn't come out with something in the next week, I may very well considering going with another company--I wonder how many feel the same. 1 Comment »

Improve breakable thin wire in power adapter connector

XPS products, Laptops submitted by tovare Yesterday

In the power adapter for my XPS 1330 there is a small needle-like wire in the (male) connector. This pin easily bends and breaks, requiring replacement of the whole power adapter.

A pin would normally be exposed to artifacts that could bend it during normal use because there isn't any location in the carrying bag, and there is no protective cap to place on the end when transporting the equipment.

I urge you to please look at the power adapter construction and consider one of the following actions:

A. Use a stronger alloy for the 'needle' in the male connector.

B. Provide a small protection cap that can be attaced to the cable (male connector) and easily put on when transporting the adapter. And please make this available to existing owners.

C. Provide a glue-on fixture for the socket which adapts the socket to adifferent and more appropriately designed connector.

Thank you very much ! 1 Comment »

Battery Bay Cover for laptops

Laptops submitted by kyles Yesterday

Keeping a li-ion battery charged, or charging all the time isn't good!
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
Unfortunately, when my D830 is plugged into a wall socket (80% of the time), I can't just take the battery out because not only dose it expose the battery pins to the elements, but the battery also holds a corner rubber foot that if removed makes the laptop wobble on a flat surface. If Dell supplied a battery bay cover, or even a gutted battery shell, customers could then remove there batteries while plugged into a wall outlet so that they don't compromise the life of the battery. 1 Comment »

Dell, New Product Ideas, XPS products, Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Yesterday

As almost all your competition now have Centrino 2 laptops launched, it is time for DELL to refresh the XPS Laptop line so I can buy a 13 inch XPS laptop with Centrino 2. 2 Comments »

Have a series of laptops geared towards students.

Laptops submitted by hollyberry 2 days ago

I think there should be a series of laptops geared towards students looking for a laptop with word processing and internet at a cheaper price. students don't need a fancy laptop with a fancy pricetag. they just need a basic, small laptop that is affordable to them. 4 Comments »

low cost laptop

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dicky.parhar Jul 15

If Nicholas Negroponte can do this on meager donated money, why can't Dell - a multibillion dollar corporation - do the same. Strategicaly, it will bring in lot of goodwill and halo effect for the dell products. 4 Comments »

smaller screens more available

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by hollyberry Jul 15

I think that in your products there is an absence of 13.3" and 12.1" models. The only low priced 13.3" model is the Vostro 1310. I believe that in this age where mobility is a must, there should be more machines with smaller screen sizes more readily available at a lower price, because there are many people who are travelling around a lot looking for a small screen size for better mobility and a lighter laptop. Thank you for reading my comment and considering my idea. 4 Comments »

Upgrading dell laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support, Laptops submitted by gomzi Jul 15

Ive dell inspiron 1525, when i bought it i forgot to get game card installed in it (MY MISTAKE), when i try some heavy graphics games they are not supported,
When i have a word with dell tech team regarding upgradition of game card they said it cannot be done, if you want game card you should buy new configuration dell laptop,
Dell should put a provision of upgradition of cards,
till now only ram, hdd or processor are upgradeable.
This is imp and dell should take care of this coz for small things one cannot buy nwe thing again. 1 Comment »

Glow in the dark letters

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by badblood Jul 14

There's lots of ideas here for a back lit keyboard or for little lamps to shine on the keyboards of laptops, so that we can use our computers int he dark. Proble is, both of these can contribute to battery drain.

So why not put glow in the dark letters on the keyboard. Illumination from the screen should be enough to keep them bright and easy to see.

Put XP Drivers for Studio 15 on Dell Website

Operating Systems, Service and Support, Laptops submitted by dansrfe Jul 11

Please put XP drivers on Dell website for the new Studio 15 laptop. Many customers are forced to buy a small business laptop or use drivers from all across the web for them to install XP on their notebooks. Please give your customers the flexibilty to install the OS of their choice by providing drivers for the OS. I am not saying that you will have to cover customer installed OSs by the Technical Support help, but you can do everyone a favor on helping your customers enjoy using their laptop more rather then have them hunt for drivers and utilities to install. If you do this I believe many more customers will come to you. 3 Comments »

Don't install MediaDirect on new notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rq Jul 11

I bought a new Inspiron lately, and found an application named DELL MediaDirect installed on it. I suggest to ship without it (at least without its "embedded" version) anymore though, because:

1) The "embedded" version is installed in a separate partition, which boots Windows XP Embedded, which, according to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/products/wexpe/default.mspx , costs DELL $90 per shipped unit, thus, increasing price of the laptop.

2) The MediaDirect, which is installed as an application in Vista, starts when certain combinations employing AltGr are used, thus interrupting the work user is performing (this is actually a bug in that software). This makes typing in Lithuanian trully annoying, and probably affects other keyboard layouts too.

3) The "embedded" MediaDirect can't play many movies (presumably because of the lack of codecs), so again, it's quite useless.

4) Vista wakes up from sleep just as quickly as "embedded" MediaDirect starts. No point for it, again. 7 Comments »

new mini laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jeanninecrum Jul 11

I am very interested in the new mini laptop that is coming out. I have a 17" inspiron that i love, but it is too heavy to carry around all of the time. I have been looking into getting a mini-laptop and there are some features I would like see: a SSD with an additional and unpluggable Flash drive (like the little flash 8G harddrives). I like SD cards, but not all computers have slots for them, having a slot to insert some kind of flash memory so that it doesn't stick off the side would be nice--perhaps underneath. I think that the mouse pad on these mini pc's should not be in the bottom-middle of the key board area, maybe on top? I have played with some of the other 7 - 10" laptops and find myself accidently clicking the mouse more than average. And the screen should be easy to read outside in full sun.

If there is an opportunity to test these little guys for a week, sign me up. I wonder if they can really handle being portable data/typing machines and if they can survive the massive purse! 9 Comments »

College lectures solution

Education, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by t.t.braddock Jul 10

in college its kind of difficult to take notes on your laptop and record the teacher during lectures. so an idea would be is have a built in vioce recorder. so that you can type your notes without having to hold an vioce recorder at the same time. then you can rewind later and listen while you type additional notes and use to study off of later. 5 Comments »
