better keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products submitted by paulnielsensql Jul 12

My D620 keybaord is flimsy. I expect on a business class machien to have a great keyboard.

Or, offer an executive model of the Latitude with a high-end keybaord and better display. I'd gladly pay an extra $25-50 for a great keyboard. 1 Comment »

Latitude XT Battery Slice improvement

Latitude products submitted by koshea331 Jun 10

We are in the process of installing new Latitude XT tablet computers, so far we are impressed with the units. The one main suggestion I would make is that the Battery Slice should allow you to pass through connect to the base. It seems silly that they only way you can run the XT in the base and recharge the slice is sepperatly. I seems that it would just need a pass through connector that would allow for both the XT use in the base and to recharge both the main and the slice batteries.

Thanks,

Latitude XT Specs

Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by ccpljat May 31

Why is is that with the Latitude XT, which is the only Dell computer that I have seen that is a touch screen tablet, you can't get any higher than a 1.33 GHz 533 Mhz processor? Shouldn't this laptop be allowed to be customized with the same options as the other laptops? I would think about getting a convertible laptop like that, but I don't think it would run what I need it to run. Please consider adding more powerful processors to it.

Also, you can't go above 3.0 gig of memory. There should be an option for more than that.

A bigger hard drive would be nice too.

How about dedicated graphics option? Comment »

E Series Notebooks - Dell logo

Latitude products submitted by dionne May 29

I have seen the new Latitude E Series and am very disappointed that the Dell logo has changed. This takes away the Dell identity and makes it like any other notebook. Please please reconsider and bring back the round Dell logo that we all love!!!!!! 1 Comment »

Lean Up-to-date (only) Ultraportable concentrating on size & weight

Latitude products submitted by bretta May 21

The E-Series looks great - but please give us a couple of thinner and lighter models in the 13" - 15" screen size *without* internal optical drive, VGA, DVI, PCMCIA/ExpressCard and Firewire; the idea being minimal size and weight (along with sufficient power, of course).

Keep DisplayPort, at least 2 USBs, eSATA ('til USB 3.0 is ready) and give us solid processing including at least P8400 & P8600. If there's room left over somewhere, include a small SSD (1.8"?) as an optional second drive (that's one of the few 'extras' I'm fine with). I assume it'll have built-in wireless and I couldn't care less about GPS (I hope I'm not paying much in dollars or bulk for it).

I think of this as an updated version of my favorite laptop; a ~2002 Latitude X200. And no docking station, please; just an external optical drive. Thanks. (My $.02) 11 Comments »

Media card reader on latitude Series

Latitude products submitted by handrianto May 16

Until right now, I'm still wondering why Dell Latitude Series (except D430) have no support for internal Media card reader (SD, MMC, Memory Stick, etc). such thing as media card reader is already common to use nowadays. while latitude design for office workers, most of employees must have digital camera, pda, etc which utilize media card.that's why even latitude model should hav media card reader embedded. 1 Comment »

Latitude X2 (fanless ultraportable laptop)

Latitude products submitted by nojooim May 14

Revive the Latitude X series with latitude X2 laptop. It's a shame that Dell has no fanless ultraportable laptops available anymore, since X1 is no longer available.

The old X1 design with 12" inch widescreen and 1.1ghz 5 Watt TDP Pentium M ULV was quite perfect, as reviewers and many users noticed. It was rugged with magnesium alloy body and spill protected keyboard, also battery life was excellent.

It should be brought back to life with Intel Atom CPU (2 to 4 Watts TDP) or Core 2 Solo ULV (5.5 Watts TDP) CPU and SSD for completely silent operation, that would not bother with noise, even at middle of the night.

With fanless cooling and SSD it would have no moving parts at all, so it could be sealed to prevent dust and moisture entering the machine, which should improve reliability. With 9 cell battery and LED-backlit screen it should have quite amazing battery life.

It would not be ultraportable, but ultra-ULTRA-portable :) 5 Comments »

XT virtual trackpad

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Monitors and Displays submitted by weho Apr 30

For the Latitude XT a "virtual trackpad" would be a nice feature for multiple monitor solutions. The Windows Tablet Extended Desktop Powertoy works OK if you are using a stylus but is not usable in Touch mode because a touch is automatically registered as a click so you can only click and drag on the external monitor. Having a software trackpad you can pull up like the TIP would be very useful. Considering that N-trig digitizer is essentially a giant track pad, this shouldn't be such a difficult thing to do, perhaps even at the hardware level. Comment »

Make Penryn processor available on Latitude D530

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products submitted by cestuila Apr 18

Hi,

I would be interested in buying a 4:3-screened laptop. The D530 is one of the only options left on the market with a non-wide screen, and I know it would suit my needs. BUT, there is still no Penryn Processor on these, and that's a BIG obstacle...

I would definitely get one if I could get it with a T8100 processor...

Most of your laptops now have the Penryn option, why not the D530? 2 Comments »

Updated Driver Releases

Dell Web Site, Latitude products submitted by gsulfaro Apr 7

I have noticed that the Video Card Drivers for the Intel X3100 Graphics Driver that ships on the Latitude D630 has not been updated since the 30/5/2007.

Intel have released several new revisions since then but the one on your website is still outdated and we are not able to install the package directly from the Intel website.

Please update your drivers. 2 Comments »

Get some Precision, Latitude models displayed in retail.

Latitude products, Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by jmxz Mar 28

Dell's brand image in most consumer's minds is typically that Dell is a low-end discount computer vendor with rather clunky designs - or, a smaller number of people think of Dell as also having a gamer angle with flashy-xtreme-geek Alienware and XPS lines. People get those impressions because those are the Dell models they typically see.

What fewer people seem to notice is that Dell makes some extremely nice serious computers in their Precision and Latitude lines - that have the sleekness, style, and quality to directly compete with the IBM(now Lenovo)'s and Apple's of the world in the high end.

Seems Dell could elevate their brand image considerably if some of the higher end Precisions and Latitudes were displayed in more places where people are introduced to Dells. Maybe not in WalMart; but certainly places like Staples and Best Buy I'd imagine the higher end Dells would make quite an impression. Once people could actually see and touch such models more easily, I imagine a number of business people especially would get those higher end models instead of vostros or inspirons. (I would have preferred a latitude to my inspiron, but you didn't have any with an OS I could use at the time of my last purchase.) 4 Comments »

e-Latitude like laptop in bright enclosure

Latitude products submitted by claudio_ch Mar 26

On March 22 engadget wrote about what they think the new Latitude E5000 and E6000 series will look like. Yummy specs, but why oh why all in black?

I hope to see something with the same spec as the D830 replacement in a "bright" enclosure like e.g. todays Inspirons. silverygrey keyboard and palm rest, colorful outside. Don't care wether it is branded Inspiron, XPS or Latitude as long as it looks "bright" and has all the yummy stuff of what engadget says the Latitude E6500 will have. 4 Comments »

Offer tablets with capacitive multi-touch and a publicly available API.

Latitude products, Monitors and Displays submitted by mlazarov Mar 26

I realize that the Latitude XT already has a capacitive touch screen which I have heard is dramatically better than resistive screens. I would like to see Dell leverage this capacitive touch technology to offer tablet PCs with capacitive multi-touch screen.

I understand that if the hardware is there the problem may still lie with support from software and the operating system. To help remedy this problem, I propose that Dell offer a publicly available API in order to allow all developers to develop novel applications that utilize multi-touch technology.

I don't know if the API would help the situation with Windows system, but I have seen several multi-input systems for Linux that have been available for several years. This base of code may serve as a jumping off point for new and exciting applications of multi-touch relevant to both business and consumer applications Comment »

Put both PCMCIA(Cardbus) and Expresscard 54 expansion slots in laptops.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Laptops submitted by mandarinka Mar 23

It's a bit silly that most addon cards available (like TV tuners, controllers, network adapters and mobile internet connection cards) are made for the Cardbus (PCMCIA) interface, now that a lot of laptops is phasing it out in favor of the expresscard bus. I agree that the future lies in the latter and newer expansion slot, but it would be great to still have some backwards compatibility in the years to come.

Therefore I would like to see laptops with both types of slots (just 1+1 probably), at least in the Latitude line. I guess it shouldn't be a big problem, at least in the 15,4" form factor. I have seen some Acer machines that supported this, but that just aint Latitude.

P.S. It would also help if these were not in rack (one atop the other) beacuse the cards tend to have this external thingie that is often bulkier and prevents the insertion of other device in the slot atop it. So give it a thought if it wouldn't be possible to put them in lateral possibtion, next to each other - under the motherboard or under the keyboard... That would be great, I'm sure design-conscious people (well, the practical ones, not teh apple stuff, I fear) would apreciate that. 9 Comments »

Centrino 2 for Latitude XT

Latitude products submitted by burton123 Mar 16

Maybe if Dell put the Montevina (aka Centrino 2) into the Latitude XT and debut it at around $2200 it might be worth the price. The current system is running a platform that is nearly a year old at this point in time (March 16). They should also aim to release this product very soon after the Centrino 2 ship date. No point in waiting a full year again before people can buy it.

I think paying that kind of price for the old parts is a bit hard to swallow, business user or not. And believe it or not, probably the fastest growing segment of convertible tablet users is university/college students.

Whether the user needs the power or not should not be part of the equation when putting the system together, it's whether the end user sees value in the product. And a $1000 premium (over a similarly built Lenovo X61t) for a VERY fancy touchscreen that will be wonderful a year from now, is a too steep a price to pay to offset components that are a year old. 3 Comments »

Dell your new Latitude is so ugly (on the exterior; the interior looks good)!

Dell, Latitude products, Laptops submitted by winoffice Mar 12

Dell your new Latitude is so ugly (on the exterior; the interior looks good). First where have you got Dell rectangles???? It is supposed to have Dell circles! And the divided grey/light grey look of the exterior is the ugliest. As it is no XPS with flashy lights, it should be all black or all silver (but the Dell circles should be silver). And look here. 2.6" height???? Up to now, the thickest Dell laptop that I have ever seen was only 2", not 2.6". 8.98 pounds for a 14.1" laptop???? Dell you really need to improve on your new Latitude. 24 Comments »

How to sell an Inspiron Tablet to Students...

Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by pattyboy Mar 12

Obviously, by reading the title, this is an Idea without a product...yet.

The idea isn't overly original either, as Nikon has done it already.

When and if, Dell produces a non-ntrig screened, Inspiron tablet PC in the $1200-1500 price point, with at least a 1.5ghz core 2 Duo, 2 gb ram, at least a 100 gb, 5400 rpm HD, and two batteries(if one won't last more than 3hrs). This is how I would market it:

Like the Nikon Ad campaign that involved the camera maker giving a few hundred cameras out to the citizens of a particular town and then following what they took pics of, I would choose 10-20 Colleges, some large, some small, and give out 10-20 tablets to the students of different colleges(i.e. business, engineering, medical, etc.), then follow them for the school year with them posting journals outlining how they use the tablet, and how it has helped them in their studies. I would be willing to bet that Microsoft could be convinced to co-op on expenses, to market student office, and one-note.

My school does a similar journal of several freshmen each year, and one can follow how their year is going on the main page of the University website. I've used tablets in school for several semesters now, and actually find myself forgetting to bring actual pens to class (helpful for pop quizzes)

Getting the great textbook scam to back off and produce e-textbooks would go a long way to making tablets as useful as they can be, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. It seems that if schools and textbook makers were TRULY interested in helping students be as succesful as they can be, they would be able to take this step. But I rant...

There you go, I've done your thinking for you, now make it happen!!! 1 Comment »

Latitude XT Auto Rotation for Lefties!

Latitude products submitted by vedabrain Feb 21

The Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC has an extremely useful "auto rotation" feature where the screen rotates from landscape to portrait mode by itself when you rotate the screen and flip down the screen thus converting from laptop mode to tablet mode.

Unfortunately, this feature is design only for right handed use!

The manuals associated with the XT specifically mention that the grip on the laptop is intended to be ambidextrous, you can use it while writing with your right or left hand. The only problem is that the auto rotation has no options or controls and only goes into the portrait mode for right handed writing. The left hand style requires that the laptop be rotated 180 degrees (upside down) from the right hand portrait mode.

I can only speak to Windows Vista, that there is no option to change the auto rotation defaults. It only goes into Primary Portrait mode (for right handed people) and does not allow you to choose any other screen orientation for the auto rotation.

Speaking for all the "lefties" out there, I think that the auto rotate feature should include us too! Comment »
