smaller screens more available

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by hollyberry Jul 15

I think that in your products there is an absence of 13.3" and 12.1" models. The only low priced 13.3" model is the Vostro 1310. I believe that in this age where mobility is a must, there should be more machines with smaller screen sizes more readily available at a lower price, because there are many people who are travelling around a lot looking for a small screen size for better mobility and a lighter laptop. Thank you for reading my comment and considering my idea. 4 Comments »

Recall Dell W3000 LCD TVs with "sound but no picture" problem

Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by geobaum Jul 14

There is a huge number of owners with Dell W3000 TVs that when turned on will have sound and no picture. This problem usually occurs right after the warranty expires. If they are turned on and off repeatedly they may eventually work, but the problem worsens over time. Those with TVs past the warranty are stuck with the only option of having them shipped and assessed for repair for $261.54 not including the cost of parts. There is also only a 90 day limited warranty offererd after repair with no extension offer. This exact problem and high failure rate are that of a defective product. Promote this if your Dell w3000 tv and Dell customer suport has failed you. Comment »

Recall ALL Dell W2600 LCD TVs and Displays With the "No Power" Problem

Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie Jul 11 **REVIEWED**

Please recall all Dell W2600 LCD TVs and displays that hare suffering from the now infamous "NO POWER" problem. There is clearly a severe and fatal fault with the design that prevents to proper operation of these products that a simple 2 year extension the base warranty isn't going to fix.

The W2600 was supposed to last something like 10 years under normal operation. Which is what any normal person might expect from a TV costing £800+ GBP ($1520 USD). Even 5 years would be acceptable. But many people are finding they aren't even getting 3 years, 2 years or even a years worth of use because the products power supply keeps failing.

Now some people might consider Dells 2 year extension to the bas warranty for this particular issue to be quite generous. Except Dell knew about this problem way back in 2002. That of course didn't stop Dell from continuing to sell these defective TVs.

Like many other people I bought my TV in 2005. I got 2 years and 6 months of proper use out it. So between 2002 and 2005 Dell knew about this issue and continued selling. Never to my knowledge has a product recall been issued Dell has certainly never taken any effort to inform customers about this problem.

I think it's time Dell faced up to it's responsibility to provide consumers with a decent level of service and issue a product recall on all of these defective TVs! Please do it quickly before some burns their house down!

"How I solved "power-up" problem of W2600 LCD TV (if your 3 yr warranty expired)

Ok, so I guess I too have this "power-up" problem for my w2600 LCD TV. Unfortunately, I am 5 months over the 3 yr warranty, and I still love this TV when it turns on, so I had to come up with my own ways to deal with this situation.

About three months ago (therefore two months after 3 yr warranty expired), the TV suddenly didn't turn on. I hear a click when I press the power button, but nothing happens. So I unplugged and plugged back in the power cord, and if the TV is in good mood, it turns on, if not, nothing happens. So rather than relying on the mood of TV for my valuable entertainment opportunity, I just decided not to turn the TV off. Brilliant! Just turn off the input sources (i.e. cable, DVD...etc), and you get the blank screen. There’s one small problem; in the dark, you can still see the glow from the blank LCD screen. So I came up with another brilliant idea; cover the screen with blanket at night (you have to use a thick one otherwise you still see the glow.) Problem solved! This works fine for me, and I just have to explain to my friends when they ask me what’s hidden under the blanket, which often serves as a great conversation topic. By the way, one of my friends who saw this TV came up with great analogy - Freddy's Nightmare. If you fall asleep, you are dead. Same situation here. Turn this TV off, and it may never wake up again. So you just keep it awake, while covering it with blanket to keep you asleep at night.

Alas, I used to be a loyal fan of Dell. It's just too unfortunate that now every time I look at this TV hidden under the blanket, I think of Freddy's Nightmare...

Bring capacitive touch controls to the next-gen Ultrasharp monitors

Monitors and Displays submitted by eaglewonj Jul 7

The buttons on the Ultrasharp monitor require a hard press and at times the button gets a little out of place and doesn't work. Its a low grade touch on an otherwise nice monitor.

How about that capacitive touch control system from the Dell Crystal, can we have that on the new Ultrasharps?

It would be an elegant touch for a very popular and high quality line of monitors. 2 Comments »

At least 2 HDMI or 2 DisplayPort connectors on each new Ultrasharp Monitor

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by eaglewonj Jul 7

I have multiple devices feeding into my Ultrasharp 24" LCD. Both the PS3 and the Xbox360 elite can output best on HDMI. My current LCD doesn't have HDMI, but the new edition does. In my case it would still require a switchbox to toggle between the units. With some laptops and desktops outputting with HDMI, perhaps it would be a good idea to have multiple inputs of each. Same would go for DisplayPort. It would cover two computers for now or whatever other devices start to use it in the future. Not a critical feature, but it would be nice not to have to buy a switchbox to toggle the HDMI inputs before toggling to HDMI on the monitor itself. 3 Comments »

Dell Ultrasharp monitors

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by gamer128 Jul 5

Could Dell make a monitor, that is specifically designed for gaming? And support consoles? And isn't very expensive? Because most HDTV's don't have very sharp quality, and those that do, are very expensive. 12 Comments »

De-segregate Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by penguinsa Jul 4

In my searches of laptops, under "Home & Home Office", I couldn't find any 15.4 inch WUXGA (1920x1200) machines. I foolishly concluded they didn't exist-

BUT THEY DO. They're segregated under "Small Business" but they exist- The Latitude D830, The Vostro 1510...

WHY? If I'm looking for a 15.4" laptop, why is a WUXGA "good enough" for Small Business, but "not good enough" for home users?
When I do a search on 15.4" screens- one of YOUR default Web searches- why are the Business machines excluded?

Are the Home Users simply expected to "Get to the back of the bus" ? How do you justify the segregatiion ? 9 Comments »

small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by undead999 Jul 4

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

new perspective

Monitors and Displays submitted by kth_eckert Jul 4

My girlfriend and I were sharing the sofa watching a movie. Our heads were propped up on pillows, at best 30 degrees. The thought came to me that photo programs allow you to rotate the picture 90 degrees, So why cant you rotate your television picture in the same manner. For people who are bed ridden or as in my case sofa sharing this could make for a more comfortable movie watching experience. 4 Comments »

Double Sided Monitors

Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas submitted by nicole112707 Jul 3

What if you had a double sided Monitor? This would be great solution for schools that have computer rooms seating 2 people to a desk/table facing each other, or even an office environment with partner desks. You could still have the flexibility to raise/lower your screen, or tilt back and forth. This would be attractive to consumers trying to cut down on the price of purchasing multiple monitors at one time. Even the consumer that only sits one to a desk could use the option to show what they are doing to someone sitting across from them. I don't know how many times I’ve been in my boss’s office and he had to turn his monitor around to show me something. Or, maybe you can put a slide show on it... it would be a lot more attractive to look at pictures than the back of ones monitor.... just a thought! 3 Comments »

Modular laptop screens: keep your good high-res screen!

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

A problem with laptops:
When you buy a new laptop, you have to buy a new screen. If you want higher resolution (e.g. you're a programmer or an artist), you might have to pay $400-500 for a screen

BUT

When you buy a new laptop you'll throw that screen away! That's a big waste.

Solution:
Make changing screens as easy as changing hard drives in laptops. Don't force that person to throw it away when buying a new computer! Let the person transfer it to their new laptop.

Nice things that go along with this:
- Want higher than average resolution on a Latitude XT tablet? Then pop in a UXGA/QXGA screen from a third-party manufacturer or from your old Dell computer! (there are some forums dedicated to modding laptops, but this may invalidate one's warranty)
- Did your display die? Tech-savvy users can feel more at ease by just ordering a replacement screen from Dell. This lessens the strain on Dell customer service and repair. Comment »

clearer warranty regarding LCD, and other things

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

I've seen the screens of many competitors's laptops break down, and sometimes it isn't included in the warranty. For example:

[ begin conversation : ]

student: "Half my LCD screen suddenly died. I did absolutely nothing whatsoever since I cleanly shut my computer down last night."

customer support: "Sorry, that's not covered under warranty. It's accidental damage. You'll have to pay $500."

[ : end conversation ]

I'm afraid of buying laptops now without a very statement in the warranty about what is included in the warranty and what is not. For example is the battery included? (usually not) Is the power strip included? (probably not but it should be)

Personally I firmly believe an LCD screen should be included in the warranty.

I've also heard of cold damage sometimes being a problem; that could in part be addressed with a removable warning label. 6 Comments »

please inform customers about screen resolution

Education, Monitors and Displays submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

Unfortunately many customers still think "larger screen" = "I can see more".

This is not true, and is a fault of the computer industry not taking the time to better-inform the customer. Dell can be a leader in this area.

Customers do not realize that large screens of 1024x768 resolution are as bad as small screens with the same resolution (exception: people who are nearsighted).

Please allow 1) searching for laptops/computers by screen resolution, 2) links in many places educating customers about screen resolution.

Please also allow people to specify the resolution of their monitors, to at least as high as UXGA. Laptops can come default with a low/high resolution and if the customer decides they want a different resolution, they can see the price change associated with it, and decide if it's worth it. 2 Comments »

Screen Brightness/Position/Contrast Dial

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by prep.krypton Jun 30

Create a dial, much like the volume dial on a laptop, to control the position, brightness, and contrast of the display screen on a laptop and flat panel - similar to the dial that was on CRT moniters. 2 Comments »

Integrated Monitor

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by inczo757 Jun 30

I think it would be cool to have the monitor integrated into the side of the Desktop Tower. There is alot of surface area here and it should be easy enough to incorporate a thin LED or LCD screen into the side of the tower you remove when doing updates. Im using a Dell Pecision 690 and that could easily have a 24" monitor in its side. 8 Comments »

Offer a 22" monitor with 1920x1200 to counter Lenovo's ThinkVision L220x

Monitors and Displays submitted by winoffice Jun 28

http://arstechnica.com/journals/hardware.ars/2007/09/18/lenovo-first-on-the-s...

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalo...

This is the first sub-24" monitor to have a 1920x1200 screen resolution. Lenovo's ThinkVision L220x offers a greater resolution than most other 22" monitors (1680x1050), but otherwise has usual specifications: a 5 ms response time, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, and VGA and DVI connectors. The price tag is $499 ($550 upon release), but it is so high probably only because this is the only such monitor. Had there been another such monitor, the price would probbly be less.

By the way this has four USB ports as well, so except for the screen size, contrast ratio and connectors this is pretty much the Lenovo equivalent of a Dell 24" UltraSharp, so it is understandable that the L220x is cheaper than the UltraSharp 2408WFP (which is $679; http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&...).

I think that Dell should offer such a monitor to counter the L220x. I have been asking Dell many times, for a long time, to start offering 1920x1200 on all of its 17"+ monitors (http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10084750/Offer_1920x1200_on_all_of_your...), and it seems that another company caught on to the idea first. 2 Comments »

WUXGA for XPS M1530 in India

Monitors and Displays submitted by vjragvan Jun 27

I am looking for the WUXGA (1920x1200) screens for the XPS M1530 laptops in India. But it is not availalbe in India. I see that it is available in USA and Europe Sites.

I already have an Inspiron 8200 bought in 2002 and that already had the UXGA screen (1600x1200), the highest available at that time. I want to go for a new laptop now but unfortunaly I dont want to downgrade myself to lower resolution screen laptop.

Kindly plan on providing the WUXGA display to the XPS m1530 in India too. 1 Comment »
