Add removeable drive trays to system configuration

Desktops, Dimension products, New Product Ideas, Small Business, Vostro products, Desktops and Laptops submitted by silver 2 days ago

I have two kids which combine with the requisite digital still and video cameras and digital audio to make for a whole lot of data to backup. To make life a little easier and less frustrating I've installed drive trays and secondary drives in all of our systems. To make a backup I simply turn the computer off, turn the keyswitch on, reboot, make my backup with Acronis True Image, shut down the system, turn off the drive and finally reboot the computer. This is so much faster and more dependable than USB drives. 5 Comments »

Let us give all features of a mobile phone to laptop

New Product Ideas submitted by sks405 2 days ago

Today mobile phones are getting more powerful with GPS, windows mobile 6.0 and digital camera. They are kind of trying to become laptop.

Why can't a laptop try to give all utilities of a mobile phone? That will help me to keep just a laptop with me. I need mobile phone, GPS and a better camera in my laptop.

Today, I have 13.1 inch notebook which I can easily carry in car or small bag. When I have 2 additional batteries, I can always keep my laptop on. For mobile phone, one software can be made which will mimic virtual mobile phone. There should be any easy place to insert SIM card. For GPS, today I have to attach one hardware and need to install software. It can be made internal. The web camera can be made powerful.

I am sure, when all these features are put in notebook, it will become more useful device of our modern life. It will sale more and more and more.

small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage, Small Business, XPS products, Vostro products, Precision Workstations, OptiPlex products submitted by undead999 2 days ago

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

new perspective

New Product Ideas submitted by kth_eckert 2 days ago

My girlfriend and I were sharing the sofa watching a movie. Our heads were propped up on pillows, at best 30 degrees. The thought came to me that photo programs allow you to rotate the picture 90 degrees, So why cant you rotate your television picture in the same manner. For people who are bed ridden or as in my case sofa sharing this could make for a more comfortable movie watching experience. 1 Comment »

Computer operated chess board

Gaming, New Product Ideas submitted by youngexzec08 3 days ago

It's a computer operated chess board. which is controlled by a wireless keypad made just the game of chess. it's a system that u can hook up to your desktop and you and your opponet can sit across from one another and control their pieces through the keyboard. For example instead of moving the knight with your hands you can press k3 so that the knight will move to the space on the board. and you can also play the game online. for example same rules apply and the pieces will move on both of the computerized chess boards... a gaming experience that will have millions of chess players very happy. and excited to play. 6 Comments »

movie night

New Product Ideas submitted by bledyard Jul 2

picture this... the long lines at the movie theatre, the crying baby that the mother cant do anything with, the pre-teens and teens running wild. If you are as tired of this as I am, I propose we do something about it. I propose that we develop a partnership with either cable companies or satalite providers and have the movies that are in the theatre in our household. I know that I would pay $50 per movie to have this feature available to me so I wont have to deal with the above situations. 10 Comments »

optional poweruser keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

This is by no means a fixed blueprint and suggestions are welcome in the comments; I'm just throwing out ideas which could go into an optional keyboard for powerusers. For example, users who:
- want quicker and less awkward access to the arrow keys
- want quicker and less awkward access to the pgup/pgdn/home/end keys
- want an extra modifier if they're crazy
- want easier access to the mouseclick buttons on laptops
- and overall want less movement of the hands.

1)
One has space for an extra row of buttons below the keyboard.

At least 3 of these buttons should be the mouse buttons for easy access (as opposed to having them below the trackpad where they're hard to reach when typing... have people tried the rubbery mouse-stub? some people couldn't live without it while others dislike it).

2)
The Fn button should have the following bindings:
j - left
k - down
l - right
i - up
u - home
o - end
p - pgup
; - pgdn
something - delete

This prevents one from needing to move one's hand back and forth between the keyboard and arrow/home/pgup keys all the time.

To appease gamers and such who often use a trackpad, the trackpad could be emulated with Fn2 button which the left thumb can hit. (Alternatively, make the Fn key multimodal like the Toshiba m200... it's a bit hard for users to grasp though so I wouldn't recommend it.)

The Fn keys should be reachable easily with either of one's thumbs (see below). Areas which are unreachable (for some but by no means all typists) include:
- bad: the key to the right of the key on the bottom-left corder (a good place for the Win key which, while used often, is often not used in combination with other modifier keys and hence a good candidate to keep there)
- bad: anything right of the spacebar and also more than half a keywidth right of comma/lessThan key.

3)
I'm not so sure about this one, so a poll should be done to see how many people find the idea interesting.

Poll: "Do you think the spacebar on keyboards is too big? Do you often hit the spacebar with more than one thumb? Would you rather sacrifice some of the room on your spacebar for useful keys?"

If people answer "yes, no, and yes" and similar, then consider this:

Some typists never use their left thumb. This means that there could be up to 5 extra keys in the spacebar area! (ctrl, fn, win, alt, super, [whatever Dell wants], and two mini- spacebars (right below v-b and m-n) to appease both left- and right-handed people.

It is unlikely that this idea is for more than a few people... but perhaps worth investigation. If Dell does implement it, it should offer various optional keyboard layouts for their laptops, but never force the user to have it.

caveat: One may need to do lots of usability testing.
caveat2: Please under no conditions make the functions hardware-only; please make them generate keysyms. Comment »

Wireless head phone for mp3

New Product Ideas submitted by cargwella Jul 1 **ALREADY OFFERED**

My idea is simple...

Wireless headphones, mp3 and even pda

When I go running I get very tired of the head phone wire in the way when I am listening to my mp3 player. By having blue tooth capabilities for my mp3 and my head phones it would definitely be easier to exercise.

Also if a mp3 player or even a PDA had blue tooth one could sync it to the computer or car without ever having to hook up a cord to anything. the only way one would need a cord would be to charge it at night when you need to. This would be a great opportunity to hook up with GM and have this as an extra item in all of their smaller cars first since the compact cars are selling more now a days.

Thanks for the info undead999 http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Video_Conferencing/productdetail....

Future Screens

New Product Ideas, Software submitted by nivek Jul 1

Dell needs to be ready for the O-LED technology. Work with Microsoft to have the most compatible Drivers and Software for touch-screens made from O-LED's. By the time Windows 7 comes out, O-LED's will be cheep enough for everyone to use them as wallpaper, then you could have your computer screen on all the walls of your house! If Dell and Microsoft partner and work together, Windows 7 will be the best Operating System to Run your O-LED wallpaper on. Just think, you could take your finger, draw a square on the wall, and choose if you want it to be a digital window or a Television! If Dell and Microsoft can recognize this amazing concept and work as a team, the competition (including Apple, Sony, Toshiba, and more) will not stand a chance and be forced out of business. 4 Comments »

Small Laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by jolorraine Jul 1

I would like to see from Dell an ultra micro computer. Something small to fit in your purse. I saw one months ago, but it only had Linux OS. The smaller I have seen on Dell was a 12 inch years ago. Is there something Dell can consider? 7 Comments »

New Linksys

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by ladrev1257 Jun 30

Make a new Linksys system for Vonage to use so that Verizon and other phone companies can't block our voice "pockets" and bandwidth when we subscribe to and attempt to use our Vonage account. Phone companies are jealous because Vonage is only $24.99 a month. My phone calls have been dropped constantly since I've subscribed to Vonage. I think Verizon is mad. 1 Comment »

Dell Mobile PC Center

Education, New Product Ideas submitted by bhenders126 Jun 30

When I was a kid I remember one of my favorite days always being the day that the Bookmobile would come to my school.
We didn't have a very good library so it was great to have a regular dependable method to get books that I could read.
In the same spirit of the Bookmobile I think Dell should make mobile PC centers to take to schools and commuities that may not have regular access to computers.
As I envision them, a Mobile PC Center would be something along the lines of the set-up's I've seen set up at electronic conventions for demos of gaming systems like the PS3 and XBOX or perhaps more of a big self contained climate controlled RV vehicle type of set up like the ones I've seen used for medical screenings.
While helping to get kids more familiar with the use of computers, the mobile PC Center's could also be used to offer quick demo's on current and future Dell products and could also maybe even offer classes that would conclude with coupons or discounts for future purchases with Dell.
The mobile PC Center could even be used to go to Senior Citizen's centers or Assisted living communities to help them learn how to better use the computer as well as to inform them of the latest products and services offered by Dell. 1 Comment »

security code

New Product Ideas, Service and Support submitted by tbone22 Jun 30

All banks should go to a system that allows a customer if being robbed and forced to withdraw money from an account by ATM, the ability of putting in some kind of sub code that would immediately tip officials of the situation and turn the system into an asset in solving the crime. Give money with tracking chips or traceable strips to lead to finding those responsible. 8 Comments »

thumbs up

New Product Ideas, Service and Support submitted by tbone22 Jun 30

develop a service that accomodates all of a persons financial info and ties it to a thumb print. This means a person with this service would be able to pay for products and services by simply providing a thumb print instead of carrying cash or having credit cards to be stolen. Add thumb readers to ATM machines that also check for a pulse and require a code. 6 Comments »

Email Yellow Pages

New Product Ideas submitted by cpinkston Jun 30

I would love to have a website that would allow me to access people's email addresses. Just like an online phonebook, but with email addresses. Why doesn't this exist? If you have ever lost a contact's email address you know how helpful a site like this could be. If phone numbers can be made public so can email addresses and if you wish to not be listed it's that simple. 4 Comments »

One Stop Gas Pumps

New Product Ideas submitted by sharyce Jun 30

My idea is to invent a gas pump that can take cash. Much like a vending machine. Also I would love to implement features that allow people using this pump to access bank account information and pay that way as well. Ultimately, this will be more efficient to the person buying the gas, as not everyone has a debit/credit card. Will also be beneficial to these companies as they can minimize the need for the gas attendants. 3 Comments »
