Operating System

Operating Systems submitted by kelsey.mcglashan 3:15pm

This is just a thought, but what if Dell made an agreement with Apple, and started running pcs with Mac Os X, while still giving Vista as an option. I would certainly buy a Dell with a Mac OS X operating system. 6 Comments »

Fedora 9 on select Dell laptops and Desktops

Dell, Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by s33nagain Jul 3

Linux on the Dell laptops Have been amazing, so very nice. But your Linux videos completely enstate that Dell is all about choice. And, well, some users like Fedora more than Ubuntu. It doesn't have to be known this way, but some Linux Veterans lke Fedora more. And Ubuntu is more of a beginning Linux OS. I'm not saying that people who are long-time Linux user souldn't use Ubuntu.

I'm saying that some perfer a different "cup of tea" or, in Ubuntu's case, "cup o' coffee". And that's what dell is about.

In addition to the already distributed Dell computers that serve FreeDOS, and Ubuntu, we should add Fedora on select desktops and laptops. 2 Comments »

Dell should make XP Home, not just XP Pro, available until the Microsoft "end of life" date of June 30.

Operating Systems submitted by drewness Jun 23

At about 4pm EST today I was on the Dell site looking at laptops and desktops. I found that Dell no longer offers XP Home as of June 18, even though Microsoft's "end of life" date for XP is June 30. So one is forced to pay an extra $99 for XP Pro because XP Home is no longer an option. Dell should stop this and offer us XP Home until the "end of life" date of June 30. I hope Microsoft will reconsider scrapping XP, but I know how it will go down: we'll be stuck with Vista. At least it won't be around long- Windows 7 is due in late 2009. 12 Comments »

Idea for more visible windows using 'depth'

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by grannybuttons Jun 15

I'd like to see an OS desktop which uses sharpness/fuzziness to increase the sense of depth.

The idea is that while a window on top is perfectly sharp, the further 'behind' it is in the 'Z-order' (i.e. further down), the fuzzier/ more blurred it gets. ~

This would immediately allow people to see which was the window which currently had our focus.

The Desktop, being right at the bottom, would be very fuzzy. But it would come into focus once clicked on.

Why has no one thought of this before?

I wanted to pitch this to Microsoft, but they have nothing like Dell's Idea Storm, so you can have it for free. I don't want money, I simply want a more usable OS. 6 Comments »

Improve multi-monitor handling by disabling Transient Monitor Manager in Vista

Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems, Software submitted by matts Jun 14

I own an XPS m1330 (w/ Vista) hooked up to a Dell SP2008WFP monitor. I was consistently, amazingly frustrated at how it would not remember the monitor settings between sessions. It was seemingly random how my desktop would change every time I logged on or woke from sleep.

From an end-user's perspective, this sort of malfunction is absurd, especially since both the monitor and laptop are made by Dell. It really shouldn't happen like this -- something so visible to the end-user.

Turns out this is all due to a piece of software in Vista called Transient Monitor Manager. I disabled it, and everything is lovely and predicatable now.

Here are some details:

Faster booting

Operating Systems submitted by ramaseshanr Jun 11

Booting process gets longer day by day, as the OSes are getting fatter, The power of the processors are neutralized by these fatter OSes and we have not seen any improvement in the boot time. I would love to use my computer as soon as I switch on the system. Can any one build susch machines? 22 Comments »

Explain why http://www.dell.com/open now gets me to Windows stuff, but not Linux stuff.

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Jun 5

A while ago, Dell wrote "Dell will offer...systems with Ubuntu...available at www.dell.com/open". But when I got to http://www.dell.com/open today, I see "Dell recommends Windows Vista Business", links to a bunch of your pages selling Windows systems, and "We're Sorry".

Please put it back, or announce where it moved to, or explain why it went away. 22 Comments »

Extend the operating system options on the XPS One

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by winoffice Jun 5

Currently you offer only Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium on the XPS One.

I think that on the XPS One, Dell should also offer Windows Vista Ultimate, and possibly other operating systems as well. 3 Comments »

Dell operating systems ISO files

Operating Systems submitted by natakuc4 Jun 4

Instead of people having to go to the hassle for ordering a new cd for thier operating system when lost. Make the dell oems available to download as an iso file, obviously without a product key, the one at the back of the machine to be used in conjunction with the download.

I made my own xp cd have sp3 with nlite but I'm sure others would like having xp sp3 available to download as an oem cd. 11 Comments »

Stop selling 32 bit machines

Operating Systems submitted by bbr Jun 4

As 32 bit software is slowly going down the void, 64 bits is becoming more prominent.

Vistra is 64 bit capable, and needed for your system to read more than 3GB of ram.

Stop selling 32 bit machines completely and focus purely on 64 bit systems, or at least make SURE that a buying customer is aware of what he is receiving. 7 Comments »

Save the Studio 1435

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 3

Please include a 14" model in the upcoming Studio line of laptops!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/dell-studio-line-details-leak-out/

I really want to buy a thin 14" laptop with a matte finish screen, but Dell just keeps releasing/updating products that don't meet my needs. Latitude E might work but will probably be too expensive and probably won't offer Vista Home Premium. Comment »

OSX like Lunix bsaed OS

Operating Systems submitted by kingnewby Jun 2

Windows Vista has been the greatest thing that has ever happened to Apple. The Apple OS is sleek and actually quite robust for what it is, and what is it but a BSD shell with a GUI and a few copyrighted mods. Apple is first and formost a hardware company. As a whole the population in general hates Microsoft, so why not take the Apple IS and use it as non- microsoft alternative. There is a whole underground community doing it already, so why not get together with Apple and work it out. It works great, and If I can hack it and make it work on my laptop that now quad boots with XP, Vista, OSX, and redhat, a couple of multi billion dollar companies should be more than capable. 10 Comments »

XPS 1530 OFFER 64 or 32 bit OS system, AND OFFER 64 BIT DRIVERS FOR ALL LAPTOPS and other PC's DEll sells... like other lower end laptop OEM vendors do...

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 31

other vendors, I looked at, while shopping for a laptop, beatifully offered the OS system, in EITHER 64 bit or 32 bit. The world will eventually go towards 64 bit. Gateway is offering their FX gaming desktop with a 64 bit OS pre-installed.

Toshiba, also is selling a VERY impressive laptop at bestbuy with 450 gigs of hardrive, PLUS the 64 bit os system, which makes full use of the 4 gigs.

DONT LOCK THE CUSTOMER INTO 32 bit, thats horrid. Why would DELL DO THAT?. Your such a huge company, it boggles the mind, as to why, if you want to stay competitive, you would only offer a 32 bit OS system?. Revamp your deal with Microsoft, and tell them that if the customer wants to upgrade, that for being a dell customer, a dell customer can get the 64 bit OS without having to BUY it.

AND why would you offer 64 bit drivers ONLY for the XPS 1330. BUT
NOT HAVE THEM AVAILABLE FOR THE XPS 1530?????. It's ludicrous. So now the customer has to rag tag, and get the 64 bit xps1330 drivers, for the xps 1530, and end up sacrificing some hardware functionality, simply because DELL forgets one of the most CRUCIAL aspects of their machines....the OS ?....c'mon dell...whats up that, seriously..i mean, seriously, whats up with that.

EVERY SINGLE LAPTOP you offer, should have available, for it, on your website for download, 64bit drivers and 32 bit drivers.

64 bit drivers are the future, need I tell this to a tech company like dell?....yup. From a humble customer that likes your products, owns TWO XPS laptops, usses an xps 1330 for presentations, powerpoint presentations that I do, and I really love my computer, but would like
to love a bit more. Just a little more. I love the design quality, build wise, is second to none. If you fix these other little details, you will rule, your competitors will have a VERY hard time matching you in the laptop vending industry.

Please consider my ideas. I own two xps's a 1530 and a 1330.

Again thanks, for offering this forum to place our ideas. I have seen some ideas implemented, and would really enjoy seeing some of mine(others have the exact same idea as myself) being implemented.

I know I cant be the only thinking this way. I know I'm not. I highly doubt Dell also thinks I am alone with these thoughts. 4 Comments »

Boycott Windows 7

Operating Systems submitted by aikiwolfie May 29

Windows 7 is apparently going to come with quite a sting in the wallet for consumers. A while back Microsoft floated the idea of a subscription software service you pay for every time you use it. And most of these "services" are already offered pre-installed or for free like Office or Hotmail.

If the rumors are true it's going to hit home with the release of Windows 7.

Microsoft Wants You to Pay Monthly Subscription for Office and Services You Won't Use

Windows 7 and Windows Live to Have Even More Forced Integration

Oh! And Windows 7 as i expected will basically be Vista. It will use essentially the same kernel instead of the expected cut down, bloat free MinWin and the same driver model. So Microsoft still hasn't learned the lesson not to cut corners with OS development.
Windows 7 Will Have Same Foundation as Vista, Be Mostly Secret Until Launch

How could Dell possibly justify offering this ridiculous monstrosity to it's customers? Surely we deserve better treatment than this?

At the very least give us a real choice of OS should Microsofts plans come to fruition. 41 Comments »

operating system product key

Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by ghuiber May 28

Dell should keep product keys on record and provide them to system owners upon request. Since such requests have nothing to do with hardware service, they should be accommodated regardless of whether the system in question is still under warranty. Storing a string of letters and numbers indefinitely cannot possibly cost Dell all that much, and the request can be handled entirely online, with zero labor. A nominal fee of say $10 per request should more than adequately compensate Dell for all this trouble.

I am bringing this up because the Microsoft CoA sticker on my Latitude D400 faded then rubbed off entirely. About a year later my hard disk failed, and I am now awaiting delivery of a replacement. But I will have to re-install the Win XP OS, for which I paid fair and square, and I can't because neither you nor Microsoft are willing to supply me with the Product Key. The Microsoft rep said that OEM pre-installed OS's are the responsibility of the said OEM. And your guy said that since my machine is out of warranty, I am out of luck. 11 Comments »
