small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

Light up keyboards for business laptops

I'm fortunate enough to have made it in this industry without really knowing how to type. I can type fairly fast, but I have to look at the keys while I'm doing so. I highly doubt I am the only person that needs to do this. I noticed that the Alienware notebooks have an option to add a light up keyboard. I think this would a great feature to have on Dells business class laptops. This would allow people to work in bed without needing to turn on the lights, or during night flights for a business trip. I use my Dell laptop as a VMWare-based virtual lab workstation with 32 bits Linux host for (supporting up to 32GB of RAM available to applications), and I do not plan to buy a new laptop until it supports up to 16GB of RAM.

This would allow running all of my virtual LABs and working on my virtual architecture for testing and planning purposes before further hardware testing and deployment. And I need a laptop as I'm always moving. I am often working with 5-9 virtual guests, and more, some of them requiring more than 1GB RAM to work.

I know that I am not the only one in this situation. I wish this would be available until 1 year, when my Dell support will expire. 1 Comment »

After tweaking and loading the best Microsoft performance configurations in W2K server and W2003 server configurations, I expect more performance from my precision.

I expect 2 bay Hardfile with Raid 5 or Raid 6 capability.

The hardfile is the bottleneck.

Quad pentium support would be nice as well.

It seems that no matter how hard I try, I cannot configure a high-end Dell workstation that's less than $1500 more than an equally equipped Apple Mac. Why? Has Apple cornered the market on quad-core Xeons? I would like to see Dell offer two hard drive support for the 17" precision laptop line. Three drive support with RAID 5 would be great.

The 17" Inspirons have the a two drive option, but I think the Precision line would really benefit from it because of the nature of the work that is done with these machines.

I'd like a new desktop, but have been waiting for months for you to offer a system with a Q9450 or Q9550 CPU.

I can't justify the expense of a Xeon-based workstation or one with a $1500(?) CPU such as the QX9650 for my desktop. On the T3400, your next cheaper chip is the Q6700 for $670 less. The Q6600 and Q6700 cost about the same as the Q9450 and Q9550, but use 65 nm instead of 45 nm technology and have only 2/3rds of the cache. The front-side bus is also only 1066 MT/s instead of 1333 MT/s as it is on the Q9450 and Q9550.

I'll place my order as soon as you offer one. Otherwise, I'll continue to wait. I'm also recommending that my coworkers wait too. 4 Comments »

I have been using precision laptops successfully for sometime, however I am frustrated with the performance specifications of the current models with a smaller screen size. I (like many I suspect) move between 3 work locations and at each have a 24" screen which I plug into and make use of; the laptops screen size is of secondary importance; but I need as much power as I can get from the lapyop for 3d work.

I would like a M2300 type to have the same same specification as a high spec M6300 especially in CPU speed, memory, HD storage, a screen resolution (must reach resoltion of large off board monitors: at least 1920 x 1200), a large graphics card (an FX 3600M would be good), and a DVI port to connect to the large monitors.

Now we can get some of the above but not the graphics card, screen resolution and DVI port, all of which are necessary to do serious 3D and run a second large screen.

I know there is an issue of packaging the system but I am sure you can sort out getting a large graphics card in a small machine. (a webcam and multi card reader would also be usefull)

The essence of a laptop is its portability so a small machine is essential, and with the cost of large screen high resolution monitors falling the ideal solution is for a small high powered laptop that can be moved between locations and plugged into large monitors. Comment »

Dell's brand image in most consumer's minds is typically that Dell is a low-end discount computer vendor with rather clunky designs - or, a smaller number of people think of Dell as also having a gamer angle with flashy-xtreme-geek Alienware and XPS lines. People get those impressions because those are the Dell models they typically see.

What fewer people seem to notice is that Dell makes some extremely nice serious computers in their Precision and Latitude lines - that have the sleekness, style, and quality to directly compete with the IBM(now Lenovo)'s and Apple's of the world in the high end.

Seems Dell could elevate their brand image considerably if some of the higher end Precisions and Latitudes were displayed in more places where people are introduced to Dells. Maybe not in WalMart; but certainly places like Staples and Best Buy I'd imagine the higher end Dells would make quite an impression. Once people could actually see and touch such models more easily, I imagine a number of business people especially would get those higher end models instead of vostros or inspirons. (I would have preferred a latitude to my inspiron, but you didn't have any with an OS I could use at the time of my last purchase.) 4 Comments »

Reorganize 'Tech Specs' Page in a Clear, Tabular Format

Problem:

1. The tech specs page should clearly list each and every specification of this laptop that is consistent with every other laptop tech spec sheet so that people can easily navigate and compare specs. Taking the Precision M2300 as an example, I search for the words "kg" and "lbs" and nothing found. This is simply unacceptable, these important specs should be easily found.

2. The headings and pictures are nice but the description lacks any technical information on your options.

Solution:

1. As stated above, present ALL key information in a similar format for ALL laptops. This means we need weights (and how this weight was calculated in the footnote as in other pages); pictures of each side of the laptop with the list of each port; description of each option for each section (ie. on the M2300 video card section, it says you can have 256MB discrete memory but on the selection page you only have the option of 128MB discrete memory). Clicking on the configuration for the laptop:

Video Card: 512MB Turbo Cache memory (256 dedicated)

Option: NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M 256MB TurboCache (128MB dedicated)

2. Maybe offer a few more details (source from the nVidia page):

Now that the M6300 offers an upgrade to the fantastic new Quadro FX 3600M graphics card, I'd really *really* like to see a preconfigured high-end system that offers that and Blu-ray. Currently, this is not supported.

This would be analagous to the XPS M1730 WOW Edition for us Engineer types.
(Until/if Dell ever releases a long-awaited M9300?!)
